Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bug netting not required My family camped in west Michigan last week. Lots of mosquitos. I treated all of our hammocks with Sawyer Permethrin spray. Not only would the mosquitos not bite through the hammock but they wouldn't even fly in the open top. I do need to correct the REI associate who sold this item to me though. I asked him if permethrim was an insecticide as well as a repellant. He said "no, that REI wouldn't sell it if it killed insects." Well, permethrim IS an insecticide. I personally have no issues with killing bugs that feed on me but if you are concerned about the ethics of limited chemical warfare on biting insects, you'll need to try a different product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bugs away! I bought this for a backpacking trip near the PCT in Oregon. I used it to spray my tent, pack, socks and pants. I also used a net and an Ex Officio BugsAway mesh jacket. For a three day trip into the woods, I only had two bites on my legs. And I only used spray on my hands. Pretty amazing how well it worked. I typically am very susceptible to bites and develop welts, so I was incredibly pleased. I would recommend using gloves when applying, as it is hard to not get in contact with your skin. It is also a little hard to determine the 3 oz they recommend for each article of clothing. Perhaps having an indicator line on the bottle would be helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I bought this before visiting a friend in Ghana. I coated all my clothes before the visit, and used Deet on unprotected skin. She got eaten alive, I only had a few bites. She got Malaria. I did not. I wouldn't use this for every day bugs because of the chemicals, but it was certainly better than Malaria.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap clothing treatment I usually get eaten alive by mosquitos even with 100% deet. Treated my clothing, used 100% deet on exposed skin and dramatically reduced my bites. I did not like the application procedure and it's toxicity. Also, you can only treat about 1-2 sets of clothing completely. Overall, I would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a champ!! I recently went on a 44miles/5days backpack trip in the Glacier Peak Wilderness of Washington, notorious for swarms of biting flies (pretty much 24x7) and thick cloulds of mosquitos at certain times of the day. Before leaving I treated my Sahara pants and a Sahara shirt with this product, and purchased a pre-treated head net. This stuff works like a champ, unbelievable! While others ended up donning their goretex or thick insulation even during the heat of the day, and would STILL be bitten where ever there was exposed skin or cloth thin enough to allow biting... I'd put on that outfit and - bammo! No more bugs, no more bites, no more discomfort, nothing. Well worth the money in my estimation. I took 100% DEET AND Ultrathon, and never cracked either bottle. When you're moving of course the bugs can't get you in their sights, and then when one stops they just zip on the legs (of the pants), slip on the Sahara shirt, and put on their broad-brimmed sun hat and head net and, done! No bugs!! I don't know what more I can say... It's a product that does exactly what it's advertised to do, and does it VERY well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than DEET! Permethrins are safer than DEET. Read the EPA and NIH datasheets. With this product the contact with your skin is even less than DEET. DEET must be applied to the skin to be effective. The permethrins are applied to your clothes and stay there. It really does work for 3-6 weeks. Although I do feel sorry for the insects that are killed by the permethrin, I would prefer not to be a host to tick-borne Lyme disease.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Real Deal My son and I used this on our clothing on a recent trip to N. Manitou Island and were not bugged by mosquitoes at all! The "No Seeums" didn't appear to be bothered by the advance preparation however. Still, very much worth the investment!

The description mentions treating clothes. Is this effective on gear like tents, rain flies, and/or backpacks? Will it harm such gear?

Asked by: Bryan
This spray can be used on gear. Permethrin is compatible for use on fragile fabrics such as silk, plus all synthetics and waterproof membrane fabric, and will not affect plastics or finishes. Sawyer recommends testing the spray on a small obscure area of your gear and checking it after 24 hours of exposure.
