Love it!
This is my 1st kayak and so far I love it! I've been renting at different liveries by me but that was getting expensive, especially for as many times as I go. Inflating and deflating takes about 10mins... First couple times it took me longer because I kept looking at the directions wanting to make sure I did everything right but now it's a breeze. I can get it back in the bag relatively easy, but it would've been nice if the bag were just a little bigger so it didn't have to be such a snug fit. I think it has good traction and easy maneuverability. I also love the surprised looks I get from people who see me deflating it, they never suspected it was inflatable. It's a lot of fun and my dog and I enjoy it! :)
Quick set up, great portability
Blowing up was simple (read the instructions). Advanced elements foot pump is sold out everywhere, so I got a different brand that didn’t come with the attachments that I needed for the smaller inflation tubes. That made things difficult because the floor pumps up with a small tube. The kayak itself is great, handles nicely on lake flat water. I’ll update once I go out on the river next weekend. I could feel small waves more than a hard shell, but that wasn’t a problem. I’m 5’10” and I would say if you’re over 6’ your legs are going to feel pretty cramped and it might feel difficult to get in and out of. Deflating was a breeze.
Happy on the water
We bought two Advanced Elements kayaks recently and love them. It took a few practice runs to learn to inflate them well and quickly, but now we are able to unpack and inflate in a matter of minutes. We purchased an electric pump that plugs into an outlet in the car and a dual action hand pump. The hand pump is all we need to quickly and easily inflate. Also, be sure that your boats are dry before repacking them in their bags. We like to let ours dry out in the yard before repacking them. This helps avoid developing any musty odors. My husband and I are quite different in size and we are both very comfortable in the kayaks. They glide beautifully and we've enjoyed exploring new waterways nearby.
Portable and fun
Excellent recreational kayak that does very well on a calm Puget Sound day. Lightweight, easy to store, fits in 1/2 of my trunk (I drive a small sports car) and comfortable to sit in! The carrying bag can double as a make-shift backpack to carry the boat in, though I wish they made it a real backpack. Storage space on the deck as well as behind the seat. Con: small boat does not keep up well with a regular kayak so you'll always play catchup. If you get caught in a decent current, you'll have a struggle to get out of it. Though spine attachment (sold separately) may help with this. The more advanced models are better for speed and rougher waters.
Have kayak will travel
We needed inflatable kayaks because we are moving to Madagascar and couldn't ship hard shells. For the past few weeks we have been experimenting on the Potomac and have found these kayaks to be TOO much fun! With little practice I am able to inflate my kayak in less than 10 minutes. I use the hand pump - I don't think one should bother with a compressor because, really, it takes about 50 pumps at most (I'll count next time) to fully inflate. The kayak is very stable and handles nicely in the fast flowing river. It is light-weight so my husband and I can portage both boats at once (with me in the front and him in the back) down to the shore with ease. There isn't much storage space at all in the back of the kayak, but there is enough room inside the front to fit a backpack with picnic provisions. A cup holder would be great, but we improvise. We lash our shoes and jackets to the "deck" (what do they call that anyway?) and so there is more storage space above board. One should note that this is probably not the kayak for a big person. I am 5'2" and pretty petite - the boat is a great fit for me. My husband is 5'9" and is comfortable in his boat. But a really tall or heavier person might want to go to the next boat size up. We found the seats quite comfortable - actually, this kayak is more comfortable than any hard shell I have ever paddled in. As for breaking it down after use - again, I timed myself, and within 10 minutes I had the baby back in the bag and we were in the car and ready to roll. Do take a towel along with you to wipe off moisture and mud. We have had so many folks asking questions about the boats - I guess that is the only thing slowing us down, though it is always nice to meet new people. In short, this is a fabulous boat - we plan to take them down Antietam Creek next weekend for a "rougher" work out. I'm pretty confident they will fare well, and it is so great to just be able to stow them in the back of our Subaru without worrying about anything flying off the roof. I guess the real test will come in Madagascar when we see how well they hold up to the Nile crocodiles - well, it should make for some great pictures any way!
Really high quality!
These are incredibly well made and thought out. The kayak can be setup in less than 10 minutes and put away in similar time. It comes with a carrying case that even has a semi-waterproof sleeve for the owners manual. It feels like they paid attention to every little detail. My biggest gripe is that it feels a bit small. I'm 6'0", 235lbs and anyone larger than either of those numbers should look someplace else.
Great lil yak!
This kayak is tougher than it appears! Of course it is designed for flat water. It is slower than a hard shell (but thats the nature of an IK). What surprised me is how tough this little craft is. It has manuevered through rock gardens and even class III rapids without damage or injury. (WARNING: You can swamp in the rapids if you do not have good boat control!) The downsides, the boat weighs more than you would think, but still manageable. Also, gear storage is limited. While I have used it for an overnight, it was very tight (then again, this boat is NOT designed for a long trip). It tracks well and is stable even in the ocean.
Convenient!
I bought this kayak a little over a year ago, so here is my review of it. -Sooo convenient in terms of space. I keep it in the trunk of my tiny car basically all year round. -There’s not much leg space. I’m 5’5” and found it to be okay, but there’s no much room to move around. -It’s not the best in terms of gliding up strong currents. In calm water it is fine, but I realllly have to paddle to get through rougher waters. -Stability is great. I’ve never had a balancing issue or tipped over ever with this one. -My best experiences with this kayak were in lakes and small bodies of water. I have taken it to the Puget Sound a few times which is where I struggled with the stronger currents. Still doable, but it makes it a lot harder than the sea kayaks.
Fun on the Water
We really had a lot of fun with these boats. We purchased the back bones but never needed them. The kayaks tracked just fine. To get the boats to the water my husband took the heavy ends of the boats (by their handles ) and I took the light ends and it was not a problem getting them to the water. Much easier than trying to get one boat by yourself. They are very confortable like sitting on a air mattress. We took a canvas tarp along with us to place the boats on when we got them out of the water. That way we did not get them all muddy before putting them away. We had a good spong for wiping up any excess water. So things stayed pretty clean in the car. Read the directions for deflating the kayaks and you won't have any problems getting them back into the bags. These kayaks worked out really well for us traveling around the country. See a lake ....go for a paddle.
Was good for Quiet Lake
First let start by saying i'm 6'2" and 190lbs this kayak inflates quickly and easy to enter and exit glides through the water with no issues, used on Seeley Lake Montana (Twice) light weight and compact For me this was not the right one to select (returning) while it was comfy for the duration, it was not good for me to adjust my legs, as once in the seat, you are in that position, until you're done!, no Foot rest, can't cross your legs, or even move your legs for that matter. it was quite confining in a way. But still a comfy seat and ride. this might be good for someone smaller, like under 5'5"
