Topeak MTX Side rails for Topeak Racks
Proved to be very functional addition to the MTX-V type rack I use on a foldable bike. These rails can be easily un-installed to make packing rack easier for a foldable bike. It is however important to make sure the rack is very secure on seat post to avoid the rack turning into the wheel (damage spokes). I can use either a Topeak MTX bag or 2-20 liter pannier bags using this attachment, keep loaded weight to specified limits though.
the missing piece
I was wondering how to keep the sides from getting stuck in the spokes. Oddly, this product was not listed on the Topeak website for the matching rack. While shopping at REI I stumbled on this. Bought it; installed it. Now my commute is much nicer. It was fairly easy to install. It's light. The side bags attache to it well. It keeps the side bags secure and from getting caught in the spokes.
One Issue
I purchased two of these and they were easy enough to install. A 4mm Allen key is required. My only issue concerned the weld on one of the "half-moon" shaped parts shown at the top of the photo. When I was removing the packaging, it simply popped off. The rest of the frame was fine and there were no issues on the second. Because the functionality was not compromised I elected to keep it. Probably just a one-off manufacturing defect, but still . . .
Nice system
Very nice and plenty sturdy for paved path and gravel riding. I’ve used it for one season so far on day trips and 3 day GAP trail ride. Quick disconnects would be nice, but may sacrifice sturdiness.
