Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with the Bear Vault BV-500 This Garcia carrying case is well constructed and fits my clear plastic Bear Vault BV-500 perfectly snug. I decided to go with the Bear Vault barrel versus the Garcia because it's slightly larger, weighs a little less, seals better, has a larger opening, and is transparent so I can see the contents. A cover like this is an easy solution for those who need to suspend a bear barrel on the outside of the pack or carry it on a sling. It avoids the hassle of constructing and relying on a makeshift system using para cord and duct tape or whatever. Personally I have a large backpack and I hate having junk hanging off the outside, so my bear barrel always goes inside. Why do I use this cover then? Primarily to make my shiny transparent blue bear barrel less obvious from a distance when I cache my food on the open tundra or on a gravel bar. The Denali experts feel bears may be attracted by food visible inside a transparent barrel, or at least by the myriad of shiny objects in there. The cover also makes it a little easier carrying a slick plastic barrel around camp in the cold and wet. I added a tiny zipper pull cord and a small reflective cloth panel to the cover. Now I can shine my light from the tent and confirm my food is still in position and a bear hasn't decided to play dodgeball with it. Sometimes I use a length of paracord through the loops on the cover to secure it to a bush or rock. The website photo of this item shows what appears to be a shiny metallic zipper, but my current(?) version has a black plastic zipper. The material is a fairly thin coated nylon, and probably not the most resistant to abrasion. But it helps keep the weight of the cover down to a mere couple of ounces, and for the money I have found this a good investment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The other pea in the pod A must have if you are getting the Garcia Bear-Resistant Container. After some tweaking it attached well to our packs. Only complaint was the nylon got beat up after one trip up the Colbert Ridge in the Black Mountains. It is still very usable I thought that it should have stood up to a little more wear.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unnecessary Received as a gift so I feel bad complaining about it. The product itself is well constructed and functions as decribed. That being said, I see no reason to purchase one. You don't use the case when you leave it out at night. It takes up room in your pack and adds weight. It is fairly easy to lash the canister to your pack without this case with some $2 para-cord. Therefore, I would just go without it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Needs an updated photograph on the REI site picked up today. fits the Garcia canister perfectly. comes with two nylon web straps so it can be attached to exterior of pack. does NOT have a metal zipper as shown in the photo. has a black nylon zipper, which could be a bit beefier, but I'm sure in "normal use" it will suffice. have yet to use it in the field, but I don't foresee any great problems arising.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made it so we could hang the bear cannister Pretty well made, only purchased it so i could have the added protection of hanging the bear cannister. Worked just as good as i thought it would!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have if your have a bear canister just purchased with the Garcia bear canister for a hike to the Maroon Bells where they are now required. Easily attaches to the outside of the backpack to save internal storage. I used a 58L back so this would not fit inside. Obviously if your have something 65L or larger this probably would not be needed
