Great....even used for something else?!
We used this bag to place our *large* Eagle Creek Packs in when we did a huge 2 year round the world trip. I know it's not what they are used for, BUT.... 1. They totally saved our packs from all the grime and yucky (esp thrown round in parts of Asia) 2. They detered people from stealing said pack, cause they figured nothing valuable could be inside a dirty canvas sack. 3. They lasted the whole 2 year trip with over 30 flights, and countless train, ferry, boat trips, with no more than a few little tears!!! Very impressed. Go out and get you some...
The best storage product out there
This has been discontinued and now I have 5 more sleeping bags to pack and store. I really would like to get more of these. This has made airing out and cleaning up amazing. The pull tie is basic and perfect. The bag is just so basic it couldn't be messed up. It is also super durable for tossing around the garage for storage or trip prep. PLEASE BRING THIS PRODUCT BACK!
Perfect For Sleeping Bag Storage
I used to hang my sleeping bags in my closet. But this method took up too much space, and creased the bag on the hanger...Enter the REI Cotton Storage Bag! I have a Marmot "Helium", and a North Face "Cat's Meow". The REI Cotton Storage bag is plenty large enough for my sleeping bags. What I like best about these storage bags, is that being made of cotton, they have a tight knit, which keeps off the dust, while allowing internal ventilation, which discourages moisture build up.
Bring these back!
I love this product and I use this for sleeping bag storage and travel pillowcases. I would love to get my hands on another one of these because my other two are pretty worn out. This has been one of my favorite products by far.
It's a bag.
Pros: -This is a thin, lightweight cotton sack. -It makes a great over-bag for a pack during travel. This way the airport conveyor belts do not tear off your straps. - It packs small as well. - It gets dirty easily, so as to conceal the valuables inside. Who wants to steal a dirty bag of laundry? Cons: -The REI logo. I love REI and equate them with quality. Here in lies the problem. The logo on the side screams $300 pack inside. It is dyed in to the cotton, so you can't just turn it inside out. -The sack is right on the cusp of being too expensive being that a feed bag, rice sack, or laundry bag will suffice. Again the price could be remedied by not paying for the giant dyed logo on both sides of the pack. Neutral: Fits well over loaded Medium Osprey Aether 70 Pack (no external stuff on outside but could do some).
Overpriced, yet necessary and convenient
I bought a few of these, and they fit my sleeping bags of all sizes, season-ratings, and loft. They're a great way to keep the dust off your bags, while preseving the insulation quality in your bags. However, I think REI has them a bit overpriced for what they are. I couldn't justify full price for these storage bags without my dividend. The higher price goes to cover the convenience of not having to shop online or drive around town for cheaper.
Not as good as past versions
I have probably eight of these bags bought over the last 10-15 years. More and more I've started storing all lofted items (bags and jackets) in these sacks, but also tents loosely stuffed inside. The object is to prolong life! This bag works fine functionally for that. However, the oldest bag was probably the nicest. It was originally bleached cotton. Then REI went to unbleached, natural cotton, which is, of course, much more environmentally friendly. Most of my sacks are these. I just bought three more in May, 2013. Unfortunately, REI has gone back to bleached cotton that is not only very thin (which may be desirable for breathability), but there is also a solvent-like odor to the bags. This might be from the silk-screened logo's ink, or it may be in the fabric itself. Washing did remove the odor, but I shouldn't have had to wash this type of product (the older ones have never been washed). Washing only used water and created waste water as well. Bag function 5, Bag quality as delivered 0, average = 3 stars.
Love these storage bags
We use these storage bags for all of our sleeping bags. They are fantastic and help to maintain loft in the bags. This will help keep us warmer as well as extend the life of our sleeping bags. Highly recommended!
No longer cotton
This bag is very white because it is no longer all cotton. It is 85% polyester and only 15% cotton. It is my understanding that a blend of synthetic and natural fibers is non-recyclable adding yet more waste to our landfills in the future. If it were all cotton, at least I could feed it to my worms if it ever wore out. I am disappointed REI thinks this bag is a good idea. They don't seem like much of a leader wth this product.
Yup, it's a big cotton sack alright
The sack stores the bag but if the idea is to store it uncompressed to prevent permanent compression, then it should be even larger. Also, the large REI logo draws unnecessary attention to the treasures inside. Just sayin'.
