These socks irritated my feet and ankles. Perhaps I’m allergic to “unknown fiber”, which, I kid you not, according to the product specs, makes up 33% of the sock material.
You are paying a premium for Merino Wool. A percentage of nylon is added for durability. But you are also getting==> 33% unknown fiber content/mixed fibers. The label indicating the content of these socks is so tiny even with reading glasses you can not read it. REI is aware of the 33% unknown fiber content/mixed fibers as they list it in the above online description. REI pull these socks and and any other SmartWool "33% unknown fiber content/mixed fibers" AND send them back to Smart(?)Wool!
Quality materials and decent cushion on bottom, however the top elastized portion is over the top tight and hinders blood circulation to feet . Both of My legs above ankles were extremely swollen after a one hour hike. Rather than return, I cut off the top 2” wide section and sewed them to avoid unravelling the rest if the socks.
Wore them with normal sneakers to work on a freezing day. I was on my feet all day in the OR and had no issues. Feet stayed warm but didn’t sweat (granted OR rooms were about 60°F). I didn’t experience leg swelling as someone had mentioned in their review, but that being said I’m in my late 20s and on the lower side of normal weight for my height so lower extremity swelling is not something I deal with (excluding intentional flights)
I gave these to my GF for Christmas because she burned an old pair of wool socks around the campfire trying to stay warm. She likes the new pair of socks which are a direct replacement for the scorched pair.
