Great for bike packing
I got this bivy for bike packing, I've started with winter camping trips and have plans for summer trips coming up. I find the extra room around head better for sleeping and space to store gear outta the elements.
So far, so good!
I live in far above the Arctic Circle in Norway, and this little bivy has been a dream. The first time I used it in just under freezing temps on a gently sloping mountain side. The bivy fit in the biggest 3-ft wide flat space I was able to find, and the stakes kept it solidly in place all night. I was able to stay protected from the wind all night as I slept under the stars and Northern Lights. In the morning the entire top of the bivy was coated in thick frost, but everything inside the bivy was totally dry. Another time I mostly zipped up the top because it was quite cold, and didn't have any condensation issues. This bivy has great waterproofing and a decent amount of space inside for how small and light it packs up! I stopped using it for the deeper winter months, but look forward to upcoming springtime Arctic adventures!
Warmer, drier, and roomier than expected!
I used this in tandem with a Kelty Cosmic 20 down sleeping bag + one Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol pad over a few moderately windy, ~32 F nights in the mountains. I'm thinner and tend to get cold easy, especially my feet, and this combo kept me *very* cozy. I'm used to sleeping in a jacket on cold nights, but I immediately took off both my jacket and socks even before getting in my bag fully. I left the shell unzipped because I was afraid of condensation, but after waking up in the middle of the night and noticing no condensation yet, I decided to zip it all the way to test if I'd get condensation, and to my surprise, no condensation when I woke up a few hours later! The small pole around the head opens up a roomy area around the head with room for small gear on the floor too. My only minor gripe is the lack of height at the feet. Sleeping on the back, my toes felt too cramped. Luckily, I'm more of a side sleeper and had no issues in that position.
Excellent Choice For My Purposes
I purchased this for my daughter who lives in central Europe and spends her weekends in the Alps. Normally, she overnights in "huts," which provide dormitory accommodations and meals, the cost of which adds up. That said, because she grew up in the US, she misses a more "wilderness experience. Unfortunately, in the Alps, tent camping on the trails is not allowed, but "bivouacing" is permitted. Thus, my purchase. Bottom line, daughter loves it. Perfect for her needs and its use does not offend European sensibilities. She's had me acquire a second for a hiking buddy.
Banana Bivvy Adventures
I’ve not been out in the wild yet but did set it up at home and put my sea to summit mat and down quilt in side. It was a little tight so I may use my mat on the outside of the Bivy bag. I really like the side entrance design. I also like the big opening option with the mesh zipped up protection. The yellow is a bit bright (will have to see if it is a draw for bugs) so it won’t blend in, but I like it nonetheless. The thing I worry most with bivvy bags is condensation, so will see if it’s better than my OR Helium bivvy. The hoop helps with head space and keeps it off my face. There is extra space for gear and clothes/boots. I’m heading to Canada next week to go camping and gonna test it out.
Great bivy but hot in summer!
I spent one night in this bivvy on the Appalachian Trail at the end of summer. I was overall very impressed by its quality, particularly its mesh to keep away the mosquitos. Also, it was roomy enough (6'3") to store some essentials and the pole helps to keep the mesh away from the face. From the other side, it ran unbearably hot in the evening even though I only had silk linen wrapped around me, and almost chilly by the morning. I used a tarp above the bivy to provide shelter from possible rain and some privacy, which in my view is a great add-on.
Overall great just not for me
Overall I think this was a great piece of gear, it is light weight, packs well, easy to setup and did great in freezing temps. My issue is that I am taller, 6'3 and have size 13 feet so my feet had to be tucked in at an awkward angle which caused strain on my knees and made adjusting difficult. With my pad, sleeping bag and insert, it was a tight fit for my body type. I think this system would work wonderfully for someone who was a bit smaller than me.
New Orleans jazz festival ready
Uthe sing my Black Diamond bivy for the first time as I type this. I love the mesh cover to keep out New Orleans fly bugs! It works in the hot weather too. I can't wait to get a shower to zip up to see the water proof fabric work. It was so easy to set up, too. Of course I wish it had a foot print included for that price.
Great bivy
GREAT bivy. Recently used it at 12,060 ft (Lake Dorothy, IPWA, CO). I'd trust this bivy in snow, hail, rain..whatever Mother Nature throws at me. Too bad it's being discontinued. Used multiple times in RMNP and IPWA, all above 11,500 feet. No problems with condensation.
Excellent for one person
Less than 1kg and good performance in all weather conditions, thus is an excellent choice for the outdoor activities as hiking, hunting or high-mountain exploration. All the best from Norway
