Everything You Need To Know

Full Disclosure: Coast provided me this XP9R in order for me to test it out. But, everything I will talk about here is my own opinion and I'm not going to hold back any punches. Coast Portland was not given copy approval nor any editorial input in this review. That means, they're reading this review for the first time along side you. These are the topics I will cover. Skip to whatever corresponding number in order to read about that specific topic and find what you are looking for. 1) What I Don't Like 2) Why I'd Recomend The XP11r Instead 3) Build Quality 4) Weather Rating 5) Weight 6) Focusing Mechanism 7) Operation and Modes 8) Charging Port 9) Battery and Charging 10) Charge Time/Battery Satistics 11) Battery Level Indicator 12) Holdster 13) What's Included 14) Final Thoughts The individual topics begin here: 1) What I Don't Like: • I dislike the button. I've been spoiled with the low travel high positive tactile buttons of the XP11r and XP18r. Instead of going with the same style button, the XP9r has gone with a generic, stiff, mushy, clicky style button that takes much more force to actuate. I definetly prefer the button on the XP11r. • There is no charging port built into the light itself. You must remove the battery from the light in order to charge it. • Another omission is the battery level indicator. • I wish the battery Included was higher capacity. A comparable cell (Nitecore NL1834R) is 3400 mah compared to 2600 mah for the Coast. Although, the Nitecore cell uses Micro-USB • The battery charges too slowly when using the built-in USB-C port 2) Why I'd Recomend The XP11r Instead: • The XP11r is not that much larger than the XP9r. Although, some may argue the slightly smaller size of the XP9r is worth it • It has a battery level indicator • A better button • 4 modes instead of 3 • A max output of 2100 lumens compared to only 1000 lumens • A USB-C port built into the light. Meaning there is no need to remove the battery from the light to charge it • Nearly double the runtime when both running at 1000 lumens • Can also run on three AAA alkiline batteries via the included adaptor • With so many advantages, and only costing an extra $20, the XP11r truly is the pinnacle of the XP series of lights 3) Build Quality: • The light feels very premium. It has some heft to it and feels rock solid in the hand • It is entirly made of high strength anodized aluminum • The handle has no knurling, but instead has a raised square grid pattern (kind of like a chocolate bar) • The tail cap unscrews in order to remove the battery and has a large jut out for a wrist strap which also acts as roll away preventor. You are able to attach a rather thick wrist strap • The button is a high travel, stiff, mushy, high positive tactile button with a rubber cap over it 4) Weather Rating: • Rated IP54 dust resistant and weather proof 5) Weight: • 5.6 oz (160 grams). That's about the weight of 29 United States Quarters 6) Focusing Mechanism: • This light has Coast's Pure Beam focusing optic which gives you the choice of a perfectly smooth flood beam with no hotspot, or a Bulls-Eye beam consisting of a narrow hotspot with some spill surrounding it • To focus the light, you twist the head clockwise to unlock the head, slide it up or down to where you want, then twist counterclockwise to re-lock the head 7) Opperation and Modes: • The operation of the light is controlled by one button on the tail cap • The modes go in order from medium, to high, to low • Lightly press once for medium at 350 lumens. Let go and lightly press again for high at 1000 lumens. Let go and lightly press again for low at 67 lumens. Fully press at desired brightness to select and remain on • There is a momentary on mode 8) Charging Port: • No charging port built into the light itself. Instead, there is a USB-C charging port built into the battery 9) Battery and Charging: • The light uses a Coast lithium-ion Zithion-X ZX850 18650 battery. It has a built-in USB-C charging port and a charging indicator on the top of the battery • A solid red light indicates charging and a solid green light indicates the battery is fully charged • The cell is a standard 18650 battery. Meaning, any protected 18650 cell will work in this light • Flat top non-protected cells will also work as there are springs on both ends of the light 10) Charge Time/Battery Satistics: • There is a significant difference in charge time when using a dedicated charger compared to the built-in USB-C port. The battery was tested from completely dead Rated Capacity: 2600 mah Tested Capacity: 2800 mah Dedicated Charger (Nitecore SC4): Charge Speed: (Set To 2997 mah) Time: 1 hour 5 minutes Dedicated Charger (Nitecore SC4): Charge Speed: (Set To 1999 mah) Time: 1 hour 44 minutes USB-C Cable: Charge Speed: (Maximum 832 mah) Time: 2 hours 53 minutes 11) Battery Level Indicator: • There isn't one 12) Holdster: • Coast makes a holdster that works for this light (sold separately). It is the Coast S30 sheath 13) What's Included: • Coast XP9R • Coast Zithion-X Lithium-ion battery • Charging cable. It is USB-C on one end, and USB-C and a full-size USB A on the other end 14) Final Thoughts: Overall, I like it; but I'd still recommend spending a bit extra and getting the much better XP11r. its cost isn't far off from the XP11r nor is its size that much smaller. With double the brightness and packed with every bell and whistle you can ask for, the XP11r is undoubtedly the better value. I'd only recommend the XP9r to those who already have a collection of 18650 batteries. Paired with its small size and rugged build, it is a solid choice; but, if you are looking to get a great  flashlight and don't have a pre-existing collection of batteries or are simply looking for the pinnacle of flashlights offered by Coast, stick with the XP11r. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent light for work and play

Absolutely love this light. Super bright and holds a charge pretty well. Fits in pocket with no obstruction or heavy weight. Tough as it can be, and the holder is very convenient, and helpful. Couldnt be happier with this light.

I got this light today Nov. 27 2020.

I will tell you it came in today I opened the box and it was packaged very well and very professional looking in the box. I picked up the light and right out of the box it was charged and felt very good in your hand. Four hours later my neighbor called and had shot a deer and needed help looking for it. I grabbed the XP9R the light was awesome! Short enough to put in your pocket and light enough to carry everyday! We searched in head tall grass and open field, this is where the light was golden it’s Focusing head was awesome lower setting in the tall grass and spot focus for the open field. Once the deer was found my neighbor wanted to see the light and had the same impression of the light I did. Ok here are the cons.. The tail cap power switch would be great for tactical use but I am not a fan. The recharging battery must be removed to charge it’s not a deal breaker but I find having to charge in the field the tail cap could be lost. Once again not a deal breaker. I will be reviewing this light at a later date but from what I have seen so far this light is overall awesome!

Rip Off

There is no port to recharge the rechargeable battery. A cable for recharging is included but no kit to actually be able to recharge the battery! DO NOT BUY. Rip off in my opinion.

Small enough for EDC, with power

A little big for an EDC, but I'll get used to it. Already helped me out more than my previous light; lit up a whole room when contractors had our lights off. Came fully charged.

Awesome for its size!

We have three XP9R’s now and love them. Very bright for the compact size. Only gripe is that you have to remove the battery to charge it and there’s no way to know it’s getting low until it’s too late. My wife uses one to take the dogs out at night and it’s died on her a couple of times unannounced. Not cool when you’re trying to pick up poop in the dark. Recently got the third one and found that one of the older two isn’t quite as bright and a bit yellower than the new one. I’ve heard that LED’s tend to change color over time but wouldn’t expect that with one that’s only a couple of years old and not used very often. Not complaining, just making an observation. Photo below shows the difference with the older one on the left.

Close to perfect

This light is getting to be pretty close to perfect. The High output at 1000 lumens is enough for almost anything. The low output at 67 lumens is great for conserving battery and won't fry your night vision. The medium output of 350 is about right for most stuff. The ZX850 battery, a standard configuration protected 18650 cell, is the right choice in this design What more could a person ask for? How about a long range focus like the HP7R? That'd make this one perfect! Also, a big brother...Long range focus, ZX955 battery powered unit? PLEASE? Same light output as this maybe with turbo? You know, like turn the XPH34R into a long range focus hand held?

XP9R

I have been using coast products for well over a year now, I’ve got over 8 lights of theirs for various reasons and situations due to being a high pressure vessel builder (vessels don’t have lightbulbs inside) I’m also an avid hunter and tracking in the dark is a big part. The XP9R is my favorite pocket light I’ve ever had. The dang thing is so bright and throws light where ever I need it. For its size, this light is a beast. I would recommend it to anyone for keeping in the house, truck, or at work. I’d like three for each location personally but I haven’t got around to getting two more, you will really enjoy this light.

Don't let the price fool you, it's a serious light

I was under the misconception that Coast flashlights were gas station cheapies. But I needed something different for Search and Rescue. This was on sale, so I threw the dice. I'm glad I did! These are serious lights. Robust aluminum construction, easy to operate, excellent beam quality, and a nifty rechargeable battery that can be swapped out for disposables if that's your thing. It is nice to have a couple disposable spares on hand for long night searches.

This Modest Sized Flashlight is a Beast

Will wonders never cease from Coast Products! As I unpacked my most recent order, I was full of anticipation as I opened the product carton. I'll be honest, I was somewhat surprised by the modest size of the XP9R flashlight. I expected something a bit bigger. That surprise quickly changed to being impressed. The overall build, weight, balance, tactile feel & switch activation left me feeling amazed. This flashlight, simply put, is a beast!.The XP9R in its debut @ my house is at the top of my Coast Products "Flashlight Power Rankings" - it is an undisputed #1 in my household! I have to say, this flashlight is the perfect flashlight for my hh use. I particularly like the locking slide focus. Of course, the rechargeable ZX850 Zithion-X batt is essential. That said, great things can come in small packages, The XP9R is one of those great things! I whole heartedly recommend this excellent Coast Products flashlight!
