I've been a big fan of the Torrent 2, using it as a "jack of all trades" shoe - it's a great door-to-trail option, great for travelling and just kicking around. If I needed to pick just one sneaker for everything, that would be it. It had one major drawback, however - the thick, multi-layer mesh, which, while durable, made the shoe very hot. The new version is a very solid update, bar one major issue (see below). The mesh is thinner, more dialed in, so I expect it will keep feet cooler. The midsole is firmer, bouncier, and in my view, more stable and capable in technical terrain (note this is not necessarily the shoe you may want to use for an ultra, but that's also not the intended use here). The one major issue I have is that the new upper has reduced the volume in the shoe, particularly in the internal side of the top box. I find my big toe pressed on the side of the toe box (not a length issue). My pinkies are having a bit of an issue as well. I have a brand new pair of Torrent 2s that I keep in reserve and comparing them next to the updated version, the reduced volume in the toe box is very noticeable. This may not be an issue for folks with less bulky toes, but in my book, it's a big drawback of what is otherwise a very good update.
I used this shoe for about 6-7 hikes / runs in the mountains. 10-15 miles each time. Terrain was rocky, rooty, etc. Unfortunately, the soles are breaking or tearing off. This shouldn't be happening with so little miles. If you run on flat, dirty terrain, then these might work. Anything more technical, I would highly suggest looking at other brands.
I've had 18 surgeries on my feet and legs. I play in 3 different senior softball leagues for age 60 and above. I need shoes that are comfortable on my feet and the HOKA Torrent 3's that I've recently purchased have been great for me. They provide the traction I need for playing aggressively and the comfort I need to survive playing aggressively. The best shoes I've ever had for softball and now I have a dozen pair of cleats that I no longer wear.
If you are only using these shoes for dry trails, then this is a very solid shoe with good grip on both loose dirt and rocks. On the other hand, these are horrible on wet rocks. They are also very slippery on the wet street.
I've been using Hoka Torrents since 2021. I've gone through 2 pairs of Torrent 1s (2021) and 2 pairs of Torrent 2s (2022). These seem to fit nothing like the prior generations. Notably narrower with a smaller footbox.
Had heard Hokas are very comfortable to wear from several people on their feet a lot. Agree except I have to wear orthotics and need a wide toe box, which the pair I bought didn’t have.
Ran extremely small, had to return them. Same size as my last pair, just too small, maybe is was a fluke.
