Difficult to clean and requires frequent washes.
As others have mentioned, this cup will leak if not stored exactly upright. That's acceptable, but the worst is how frequently the lid needs cleaned, and how difficult it is to do. Every two or three days we need to break out the camelback cleaning kit to really dig into this thing or black spots start forming on the inside of the lid and around the silicon parts of the sippy straw. Even with the wire brush, it's really difficult to get everything clean. Would not recommend.
Easy for kids to open and use.
This water bottle is definitely a step up from our other kids water bottles. We’ve got 3 kids that would use this bottle. Our daughter is using it now and likes it. I thought the lock mechanism was a little hard for my kids to operate but I’ve also never seen a lock on any other kids water bottles we’ve owned. However it seems really durable and great for the summer hike. We’ve only had it for about a week and haven’t taken it on a hike. My daughter said her water stayed cold for a long time. I do wish it was a little bigger. The openIng was tricky for us at first but we got it. It’s nice and leak proof!
Super Disappointed
Bought this cup as a stocking stuffer. So used for about 6 weeks. We only used cup for water and washed everyday / every other day at most. Even bought the Owala dish brush. Husband pulled spout to side and nasty brown black substance noted under spout that is not removable. Contacted Owala after trying to finding cleaning instructions online. They replied with some obnoxious cleaning regime that would still need basically two people to clean. Not worth your time. Very disappointed in product…save yourself the time & money and find another cup.
Health Hazard (GROWS BLACK MOLD)
Black mold grows internally to the silicone straw structure and is impossible to clean. Tried scrubbing with bleach, vinegar, and baking soda. Tried soaking for days as well. This appears to be a manufacturing issue with the silicon that creates cavities where mold can grow. Owala customer support appears to be AI now and just repeats the same response over and over denying the warranty claim stating as mold is a normal occurrence and to just clean it off completely ignoring the fact that it cannot be cleaned. This is a hazardous product that the manufacturer does not stand behind. Do not buy.
Very disappointing water bottle
We purchased a water bottle and washed it per the directions after a few uses (remove the silicone pieces), but it was impossible to put back together. When we reached out to Owala, they refused to replace it, saying it was our fault, even though we followed the exact directions on the label. The directions on their website are different than what was printed on the label. We now have an unusable basically brand new bottle. We decided to purchase a second bottle because our child liked this design a lot and we needed a bottle for a trip. The second one broke after less than a week and with very normal use - the lid lock button broke off inside the lid. We haven't been able get it out yet so the lid cannot close and we now have a second brand new unusable water bottle. Needless to say, we've been really disappointed with both the water bottle design /sturdiness and also their customer service. Lots of folks seem to love this water bottle and I really wish that had been our experience but it hasn't been. Other child water bottles we've used have always lasted many years, so we'll go back to other brands from now on!
Hard to clean
Loved the functionality of the water bottle but it got moldy really quickly and I can’t get it clean enough to feel safe letting my little one use it.
Thoughtful design
This water bottle contains many thoughtful details that others don't have. It is insulated, so it gives up some capacity, but gains the ability to preserve the temperature. My daughter says the other water bottles with straws don't usually have insulation. Also the mechanism to open and close the top is isolated from the straw itself, so the mouth piece is protected and stays clean. The mouthpiece is also directly connected to the straw, so it doesn't leak air into the line making it hard to draw water from .
Holds up to kids’ use and abuse
My 5 year-old loves this. It’s the perfect size to fit in her small school backpack and tough enough to get tossed around. I like how the mouthpiece gets tucked away to protect it but folds out easily. No dents or chips yet and keeps water cold. She says her classmates admire the design and bright colors too.
Get It! You NEED This Awesome Bottle!!!
Let me preface this by saying I hate water. I can drink one hundred cans of soda without batting an eye; hand me water and I will gladly die of dehydration. I note the hypocrisy in this because, as a nurse, I strongly encourage my patients to drink water. However, this Owala bottle changed my game. I actually fill it up and drink water! Gasp!!! I've been cured from my water hypocrisy. I think the straw bypasses the taste buds that alert me to the waterness of water. I can drink 2-3 32 ounces of this a day. Like I said, you need it in your life! Now, don't go fill it with soda. That would be "for shame, for shame." -Nurse Onyi (Onyinye)Teaches
Hard to clean cap
My kids love the bright colors of these bottles, and they love flipping the lid. However I’ve had these bottles for maybe 2 months. Even after 1-2 times a week of cleaning, the caps have black mold in places that feel impossible to clean. I’ve soaked in vinegar, put thru dishwasher, tried to get the nook and crannies with a little straw brush…but it’s still there and keeps coming back. I really think kids water bottles need to be able to be taken apart to clean. Maybe this is geared for older children who don’t get some much food and grime on their bottles, but for my almost 2 year old and 5 year old, this happens often and I need something easy to clean. They also have a hard time with the handle because they like having a handle to hold onto while they drink. But this handle disappears when they are drinking. Anyways, I want to love these bottles cause the colors are so fun, but The mold makes this hard
