A solution in search of a problem
If you can’t remember “righty tighty, lefty loosey,” you may appreciate this flip-top bottle. Even then, I can’t recommend it. The flip top is supposed to make the bottle faster to fill, but it takes two hands and a bit of dexterity to release the clasp. The flip top opening is smaller than the bottle opening, so you’re more likely to make a mess if you’re adding electrolyte powder. Worse, the spilled powder gets on the seal and in the hinge, so it has to be rinsed before closing. It is faster and easier to unscrew the top. Even if you never use the flip feature, the additional seal has to be cleaned, dried, and checked for leaks. Please bring back the old non-flip cap!
Straws make this a worthwhile upgrade
My new go-to collapsible water bottles for my running vest. I was worried the "pop top" might leak and make me wet during sub-freezing winter training runs, but so far after about 30 runs I've had no leaks and no wet clothing. I was also worried the round top might be annoying against my chest when using the straw to keep everything vertical, but I don't notice it at all. The straw was a little long so I cut it down with scissors. Now I just dip my chin a little to grab a drink and life is good. The bladder is a little longer and skinnier than the original UD ones, but still fit perfectly in my UD vest. I love that I can keep them in the vest and keep the straws in the little keeper loops (see pic) and just pop the top and fill them up quickly without having to twist anything on and off, which is a nice convenience. I just leave them in my vest with the tops open in between daily runs and so far I haven't experienced any mildew or funky tastes.
less than stated fluid capacity
Light weight and does fit well into Solomon pro and sense vests but max fluid capacity is less than the advertised 17 oz / .5 liters. Absolute max can fit when fill to overflowing is 16.5 oz. Realistically it fits 16oz. This sounds like a minor nitpick, but that’s an oz less than the Solomon 17oz/ .5 liter soft flasks (that hydrapak also makes), which actually fit 17.5oz. Posting this for those who purchase this expecting it to match the Solomon flasks. Also, for those adding high carb electrolyte mixes to flasks, having less than advertised fluid capacity can be problematic when upping concentration. It’s particular annoying because going up to the 600ml size isn’t an option since the shape for those flasks is wrong for Solomon vests.
Better than the flasks that came with Salomon Vest
Love these flasks. Replaced the flasks that originally came with my Solomon vest. The UltraFlasks are SO much better. I love that the tops have a ridge which, when I stretch the strap around them, prevents them from migrating lower into the vest pockets...they stay in place (the originals were always slipping down). Also love the 2 top options. I have used both the original and the hose attachments (settled on the hose attachment as it makes it easier for me to drink) and really appreciate both options, especially since I had to replace the original flasks because the tops got destroyed. Great product!
Works perfectly for hard ultra running
The short cap with bite valve works great. The cap with the tube and bite valve leaks. The bag - bottle is tough and no detectable plastic taste. It’s a welcome replacement to hard bottles especially for running on technical terrain. The 42 45? Mm opening is compatible with the filters that are out there.
Great fit, easy to hydrate
Great product - fits perfectly in the front chest pouches of my Nathan trial vest.
Bad chemical taste
The bottles work very nicely, and the flip cap and extension hoses work nicely as well. However, the bottles impart a terrible chemical taste to the water content; I hoped this was temporary and tried to rinse, clean, and"soak" the bottles in water to get rid of the taste, but it doesn't work. I've left the bottles filled with water for 6-8 hours at a time for probably 20 times so far. The taste has lessened a bit from the first sip that left my tongue feeling "odd", but the bottles still impart the chemical taste to the water within minutes of filling them.
Hi , We apologize for this inconvenience. As a leading provider of performance hydration, any issue with our product is taken seriously. Our products are made from a food-grade thermo-plastic urethane (TPU). We have used this material since 2001 and it is used by many of our competitors. It is the industry standard because of its food-safe properties and its durability. TPU is BPA free and non-toxic. Unfortunately, a small percentage of flasks have an unpleasant taste, which varies from person to person. Please try to following to reduce the taste issue: 1) Fill the container up with water and add a few drops of lemon juice. Then place into your freezer and let it freeze overnight. Then thaw it out and rinse. The taste should be diminished. 2 ) If that does not work, you can fill the container up with milk and place into the refrigerator for 24 hours. Then clean and dry the bottle. This should also help. If neither of these solutions work for you, please let us know and we will be happy to send you a replacement. Please fill out a warranty claim I will link below. https://support.hydrapak.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=913128 Thank you!
Needed straw to allow flask to remain in pocket
I got tired of taking my flasks out to drink, so I opted to get these flasks with the long 'straw.' These are so much more convenient when I am on the trail. I can simply take a sip, without pulling out my flask. They work perfect. I would think different vests might need different length straws, if the flask pocket is not up high.
Great product but awful initial taste
The plastic taste is initially pretty terrible, hence the 4 stars. I spent a couple of days soaking them with baking soda water and rinsing them out with a dilute vinegar solution, which helped tremendously. I would love it if Hydrapak could fix the taste before shipping these products! Once the taste was tolerable, I liked these bottles a lot. They fit perfectly in the taller chest pockets of my BD distance 8 vest. The tube is a good length for me to use, but would fit the BD pack a little better if it were like a half inch longer. The flip cap feature works better than I expected and holds watertight, but I won’t be surprised if they start to fail in a few years. Overall recommend, but make sure to give yourself a few days to clean them out before you use them!
These 600ml versions do fit in the Salomon vests
I have been using the standard Salomon 500ml versions in my ADV vest but wanted some extra capacity on certain longer, dry runs. These fit in the vest perfectly and I was able to custom cut the extensions to the perfect length. The flip top takes just a bit of getting used to to both make sure it securely closes (push until you get a VERY pronounces "snap") and getting that snap without spraying fluid everywhere (hang on only to the rim of the flask, not the flask itself). Couldn't be happier. LOVE THEM!!
