Great as sun hat
Purchased to use as a rain hat for hiking etc... first time out in a good rain it worked for a bit then seams started soaking in water after about an hour, so ended up with a cold damp head for the day which was disappointing. But bought some spray on water repellent and coated twice and works awesome at repelling now. Runs big but it's light weight and comfy.
Perfect for staying dry
I got this because I walk my dog daily in all types of weather conditions, and I wanted a hat for when it’s too hot to put a hood up to cover my head but raining outside or when I feel a regular cap won’t get enough coverage. I absolutely love it! It’s got great coverage and is still breathable on a walk. It looks a little ridiculous as a casual wear, but it’s so functional, I don’t even care. I definitely plan to wear it whenever possible.
Sizing doesn't match up to REI description oi size
Purchased online I measured my head before I purchased the hat. I usually take a size large. And I was 0.5 inch into the sizing description of large. When they had arrived, It was too big. It enveloped my head. I called to return it. Five bucks to ship it back. Hey REI, are you listening? Please get your sizing right. And if it isn't right, don't make the customer pay to make it right.
Rain hat, sun hat
When I brought this hat to the Rockies for a day-hiking vacation, I was a little worried that the rain resistance would mean my head would get too hot on sunny days. Not so: The hat has sheltered me from both sun and rain, and I'm delighted with it.
Buy this hat
Excellent hat for everything short of extreme wind. It's rainproof, durable, comfortable, flexible, and machine washable. One time I accidentally dropped it behind my car, and it sat out in the street all night in a torrential downpour; I was parked on a hill, and a steady stream of water, dirt, street grease, and debris ran over it for hours. One cycle through the washer and drier, and it was good as new. It's not just for outdoorsy people. It looks great (I get compliments on it almost every time I wear it) and you can roll it up to fit inside a purse. Last year I bought one for everyone in my family. The size range is very accommodating and may run a bit large. Some of us were surprised not to need XLs. The only thing it's not good for is seeing far in extreme wind. It's fine for, say, walking to the grocery store in a hurricane because you don't need to see very far, but you'll need a firmer brim for, say, ATVing in the rain.
Boring gray, but perfect solution to PNW rain.
This hat is perfect for rain. Size options are good and it has a wide enough brim to keep me dry. I wish it was available in colors other than gray; bright yellow for the gray PNW? Howzabout it, REI?
Tested for rain!
We had Full on rain and this hat kept my head and hair dry. The wide grin keeps the mosquito net away from my face. A Bonus that it's for rain and sun!
Great hat for protecting you from the sun
I have been wearing straw hats forever but this one is so great! Not too hot and stays on my head which is a real plus! Took it to Mexico and squished it in my suitcase- came out just fine. Protects not only my head but face and back of my neck so I am a happy camper.
