Awful....

Went out on the trail and the elastic strap broke within 20 minutes... I purchased a lot of OR gear and clothes over the years and expected better quality from them. Total shame, fabric & size right on and wished they had better straps. Returned it back to REI...

OR Bugout Ferrosi Thru Gaiters Failure

I will be returning, without even using one time. The poor quality elastic string detached/broke from the sew point area in the lower perimeter of the first gaiter that I tried on. This renders the gaiter useless as there is no secure attachment point, for the instep strap that goes under the bottom of the outer sole of the boot, or the clip that attaches to your boot lace, since both are fastened to the poor quality elastic string that is no longer secured to the lower perimeter of the gaiter. The material of the gaiter is lightweight and appears to be about the right height for lighter weight hiking boots, which is the reason they were purchased for warmer weather hiking, however I am unable to rate the quality/durability of this other material since the initial failure has made the one unusable since the gaiter will not stay in position without any secure attachment point(s). 0 stars would be a more accurate rating of this product based upon this failure, however the functionality of this rating system does not go below 1 star. Also, I do understand the ‘business model’ in play here, and everywhere, manufacture a product in an area of world where the lowest cost labor is used to produce the product, however, a very high percentage of the time there is a trade-off to the quality of the end product, which involves a price-point at which the product will sell at. At $59.99 these lightweight gaiters should be a much better quality that what they appear to be. Just disappointed……

Garbage

First time putting on gaiters the elastic at the bottom hem of the gaiter ripped free. Filed a warranty claim but I don't have a ton of confidence that the replacement will not fail in the exact same way.

Great Light Gaiters

These work very well for me, especially for summer environments. Forests, mountainous terrain, and even winter settings. I would highly advise however that you limit these for summer use. They'll work in snow if you really need them (I tried and they protect well enough) but I'd recommend getting a thicker and higher pair of gaiters that OR sells. Otherwise I can't complain, they're very light and will keep crud and brush off/out of your boots. Price ain't bad either.

They are light weight water resistant and keep everything out of your shoes. You hardly notice them but they stay tight and don't come off. I have bushwhacked I'm them through rough terrain and they did not fail. They weigh nothing and you can hardly tell that they are even there. I like wearing them over my pants but some people like wearing them under what we keeps thinks out of your pants and socks.

These could be great, but....

These could be great, but OR used cheap components for the top hem draw cord cinch and the instep strap. The top hem draw cord cinches will immediately come loose after a few steps and you will end up having to replace them with cinches scavenged off other pieces of equipment or buying some online. The replaceable instep strap will have to be replaced very quickly because the hooks are made out of poor quality plastic. Metal would be better. This might not be such a big deal except the only place I could find replacement instep straps was online. The OR store in Seattle didn't even carry the replacement parts. Be prepared to shell out $10 for shipping an $8 part. The plastic shoelace hooks would probably break too except your going to end up ditching the gaiters before they do because the rest of the components already fell apart. You're are essentially buying a $60 tube made out of nylon/spandex. Fix these issues and these could be a great 3-season lightweight way to keep ticks/bugs off your body and rocks out of your boots.
