Bafflingly designed waist button
I've been a fan of the Zion II pants for years and jumped on getting these shorts for when the weather warms up. They're made with the same great material, but I have no idea what the people at Prana were thinking when it came to the button on the fly. It weirdly slides on a small piece of fabric, which causes the front of the waist to bunch up unbecomingly. It was clearly done to cut costs, as the pants version uses a metal rivet for the button, similar to jeans, which works far better. Otherwise a good pair of shorts, but I was hugely disappointed by the fly.

awful compared to old ones
Fabric feels cheap and thin and is shiny. Already seeing durability and fraying issues. My old ones are 3 times as durable. These, SUCK, if you’ve worn the old ones. Dealbreaker for me I’m done with this new Zion fabric in all its uses.

Comfortable, but not durable.

I purchased these shorts at a local REI for $75. After only two weeks, they snagged and started coming apart. Really wanted to give them a better review, but can’t justify $75 shorts lasting only a few weeks before significant wear.

My new favorite shorts

Got these shorts on Labor Day sale, and they check all my boxes: color great, lightweight, stretchy, not baggy, perfect length (not too short not too long), and on sale they are the right price point. Great compliment to the Stretch Zion pants. I don’t hate the button and strap like others are critical, but I don’t have any previous versions to compare it.

A Big Step Down from the Previous Version

Negatives: Some changes Prana made between version 1 and version 2 of this short: they changed the button material from metal to plastic; and they changed the material to a recycled material. Both of these changes have significantly reduced the quality of these shorts--a pity. The cheap plastic button will surely break--and when it does, you can't just sew it back on because it "floats" on a thin piece of fabric. And the recycled fabric just looks plain cheap, even though you are paying the same price as the previous version. Colors: I purchased "Dark Iron," "Flint," and "Sepia." I would advise against the "Dark Iron"--because it's a recycled material, this color particularly looks awful--from day one, they look older than my 8-year-old Zion original version shorts. There is also this really ugly glint in the sun of a little brown, and the fabric is much coarser and rough than the original. The "Flint" and "Sepia" are much better choices for color, they actually look half-decent, though not as nice as the un-recycled material of the previous version. Positives--I do like the fit of the 8-inch, much more than the 10-inch. Overall: I hate when companies change what was a great product to save a few pennies. I guess Prana needs the extra cash by cheaping out on the button and the material, while still selling for the same price. That's the corporate greed you get these days, and Prana is not immune.

Fabric not durable

These fit well, are comfortable and the pockets are great. But the fabric has pulls all over the front, and the seat is covered in pills. So these are only suitable to wear when I am alone or with people who don’t care that I look like a slob with worn out clothing. The problems became evident the first few times I wore them and continue to degrade s I wear them as gardening and painting shorts.

Nice Pick!

Durable, low-noise, stretchable fabric with high-grade stitching and an adjustable, built-in waist cinch. With that I went with a size larger than normal, Perfect.

Get these shorts, you will thank me.

These are, hands down, the best shorts, period. For all around wear, and hikes/walks with dog/doing stuff (anything), they are durable, yet moves with you. I got these, because as a shorter person, I was tired of hiking shorts that go below my knees. It took me until now to realize that 8" inseam was a relief.

Comfortable but fabric could be better

I admit this is the second pair I bought and they are comfortable, but the fabric doesn’t hold up after a few washes. The fabric exhibits a coarse scruffy texture.

Cargo Pocket exceeds usefulness

Like Prana. Like the shorts, fabric and fit a lot. Cannot figure out the design intents of the cargo pocket...hard to access vertical and horizontal zippers in to the same pocket. Way too much construction and flaps, and for what purpose who knows? Less is More is a better design goal. (and I used to manage an outdoor technical apparel brand)
