good shorts, but the fly button is strange

I'm enjoying these so far minus 1 thing. the button for the fly is attached to a ribbon, but the ribbon is rather long. so when the pants are buttoned the top part of the zipper doesn't close all the way. very weird design.

Unforced error, the New Coke of Men's shorts
Tracey W

The style of these shorts reminds me of the classic prAna Zion shorts that many of us have raved about and purchased year after year, and were set to do so for life. However, these shorts are average / decent at best, and they are not close to being on par with the classic shorts. The material and feel fall well short of what it used to be, and the redesigned plastic button attached externally through a fabric loop does not inspire confidence that it will hold up for the long run. prAna should have introduced these as a new line, and kept the original, although you would have continued to sell out of the classic while these would end up in REI Outlet. The only significant update to the description of these shorts focuses on recycled materials. Was that the motivation that killed the classic? We want to purchase clothing from responsible companies, which I believe REI and prAna already are, but that doesn't mean we want inferior products just in the name of recycled material.

Better than expected

This is for prAna Stretch Zion standard fit size 34 shorts. When I first looked at this I did not think I would like them and fully expected to not use them. I do not like built in belt loops, the button felt stiff and difficult to use, and I thought the leg holes looked bigger than needed. After wearing these shorts for a few weeks I completely disagree with my initial assessment. The button was one of my biggest sticking points. I still think it is stiff compared to a regular stitched button but after using it I realize the value in its construction. Having a larger band of material to hold on has made it nearly impossible to rip off. This is a concern for anyone but especially for people out in the woods on long hikes…which is how I was testing out my shorts. The Zions were comfortable, stayed on my waist, and not bigger than expected. There are awesome air holes on the inside of the shirt that really make difference when going long distances and the cargo pocket is not at all flimsy or bulky. It is compact but big enough to use for phones, etc. It also zips and the zipper is hidden. This is stylish and useful. I really enjoy how these fit. They are compression not are they baggy. I typically wear a 32 or 33 but the 34s fit fine. On the days I feel lean and mean, the include slack belt allows me to pull the shorts tight. One downside to the belt is missing an additional loop to tuck it into. When it is pulled tight the belt just hangs down. These shorts are great and serve multiple purposes. I actually wore these swimming too so they double as swim trunks. If I had to point a flaw it would be the back pockets. One had a lip covering the opening and the other doesn’t. This really isn’t a concern but is a strange look to me. Overall, I will suggest purchasing these shorts should you be in the market. They are durable, a bit fashionable, comfortable, and practical for extend sessions of movement or just lounging. Job well done prAna.

Good shorts but not my favorite

Pro The shorts are well made and fit nicely. The size is as expected, comfortable length, and wears well on the hips and waist. Prana makes good products, and this is no exception. It kept up with all my activities, and I appreciate the looks. They kept me cool, comfortable all day. Con Two things that I was not too fond of were the want-to-be belt and the pockets. The belt works pretty well, but I was not too fond of the look, and it didn't work for me when trying to wear a different belt over it. As for the pockets, I wouldn't say I liked that there was no zipper or button to close any of the butt pockets. As for the side pockets, there are two, but both on the left side. It has a zipper, which I appreciate, but it gets heavy fast and feels lopsided if you put anything inside it. Overall These are good shorts but have a few flaws. I have found other shorts that I would rather have, especially for the price.

Garbage pants

After just a few weeks of normal wear, both pairs I purchased are full of snags and covered in pilling. Absolute junk.

Why did they change the button?

I have a pair of these same shorts from 3 years ago. The button was riveted in place, eliminating the possibility of it falling off. I bought this pair, and it didn’t survive the initial tightening of the waist strap, and broke right off. So this is what you can expect for a pair of 75 dollar shorts? Why do companies need to make “improvements “ to an already stellar product. Total piece of garbage.

Please Bring back the metal button!

I still love the design and feel of these shorts, pRana knows how to make a comfortable pair of shorts. With that said, the new design with the fabric and plastic button is terrible. The old metal button was easy to use and was secure, the new fabric button feels flimsy, stretches and isn't secure and feels like i won't even get a year out of these shorts while i have some that went on to last a decade. If i'm spending 75 bucks on a pair of shorts, they need to last and it's unfortunate that the button mechanism went from industry leading to "What the heck are they thinking". If i have to replace the button or replace the shorts yearly, that doesn't equate to a greener product.

New design is a major failure

The original stretch Zion shorts have been my goto shorts over the past couple of years. I was looking to add another pair or two and noticed that the shorts had been updated. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned here; this update is not for the better. Pants feel much cheaper but are the same price, and the button is now a cheap, plastic button that is attached via a fabric loop. This button lasted exactly two months before cracking in the dryer. Hopefully Prana will read these reviews and revert to the older design that is much better.

Do not buy fabric is a fail

Zion shorts have been my go to shorts for years. Bought two pairs of the ZIon II. Disappointed in the new fabric. On both pairs of shorts the its snaggs and pulls easily and after just the first or second wearing looks terrible and were returned. The button is cheap, odd and difficult to work, the leg pocket is undersized and placed oddly compared to the old Zion. Unfortunately, Prana has missed the mark with the changes to this classic. Bring back the old design and fabric.

Broken Defective Button

1 star because 0 isn't option! The shorts are in great condition! Bought these shorts 14months ago and just started wearing them. maybe 14 days total. Then the button (made of cheep plastic) broke, I mean just popped off. it's only held in by 1/8" strip of plastic. Thank goodness I was not on a hike! my store said sorry it's over 1yr but could go to the brand. yes they got back to me and had to fill out all kinds of information. ok. they just responded with a huge list of what they need done. way more personal information then I'm comfortable with. Come on, I walked into a store to buy (NOT cheep either) and use. but when I do it breaks. I'm going to take this as a loss. and never buy this brand again. Maybe I'll (Social Media) about it to see if any others had this issue.

Really nice shorts with a couple of flaws

These shorts fit me well and are very comfortable. The fabric has some stretch, which really seems to help allow for freedom of movement, and they seem to be well made. I really like the built-in belt that also allows for wearing a regular belt. However, it's hard to believe that the zippered pocket on the left leg isn't tall enough to accommodate my 6" tall (including case) iPhone 11 (i.e., a pretty standard-sized cellphone, not one of the mega-sized phones). There's plenty of space for the pocket to be 1/2 or 3/4 inches taller, that's all it would take, and then the shorts would be virtually perfect. Interestingly, the pocket has 2 zippers, a horizontal one on the top and a vertical one on the front edge. While this design might have some conveniences, it also means that you need to be careful that BOTH zippers are closed to ensure that you don't lose the contents of the pocket.
