This is my 5th NorthFace Bag and 2nd -20F NF bag. All the talk about the zipper is a bit much. It is small, but you need to be careful with every zipper on every expensive down bag. I still have my -5F NF Chamois(48 years old) and I've been careful not to snag the nylon hundred of times. This bag is just perfect for a winter enthusiast like myself. It doesn't get any better than this at this price point.
I recently purchased The North Face Inferno -20º sleeping bag to replace my 0º down North Face sleeping bag which was 11 years old. I'm a cold sleeper so I decided to purchased the -20º Inferno. Thirteen days ago I used the bag for the first time on a winter campout. The temp was 27º F. The Inferno kept me very warm, comfortable, and was roomy. I like that a compression stuff sack is included. I always use a Pulk Sled during winter campouts so I don't know how the bag would carry in a backpack. Con: The zipper snagged VERY EASILY on opening and closing. The zipper never worked as it should. This bag belongs to the North Face Summit Series...a expedition quality bag. For $650 I expect a quality product. What is so difficult about designing a quality zipper?
I just received my Inferno -20. It is roomy and comfortable. Negatives I noticed right away are 1) the zipper is very fine, flimsy; it snags quite a bit when closing and opening which could create holes in the lining of the sleeping bag or the outer shell, 2) the zipper material itself is so thin you can see light through it when you hold it up against the sky leading to concerns about its durability, 3) the seams seem to be low quality and stretch apart with any tension leading to concerns about durability. I'll try it out to see how it performs in cold conditions.
I used this bag during my winter trip to Norway 3 years ago. I was ski touring and winter camping for a week. The bag kept me comfy in temps dropping to -15F or slightly below. It was easy to pack in and out as I changed my campsite every day. I had a connecting flight and my bag got stuck for 2 days at the Brussels airport. Upon its arrival in Chicago, I noticed that the bag had clumps of down and a lot of empty spots. The North Face was unable to fix it, I sent it in three times. Neither TNF nor United Airlines was willing to pay for the damaged bag. After 3 years of struggle, I returned the bag to the REI. Thank you REI and my apology for the headache. Take away lesson: NEVER buy directly from The North Face because that company doesn't seem to take any ownership of their products. Always use REI or other trustworthy store.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The bag works well as expected and kept me comfortable in negative teens during a trip in the Rockies. I don't find the zipper to be a problem like other reviewers, just hold a finger over the zipper as you zip it up to prevent snagging the fabric. My only complaint is that the description says the head and footbox have waterproof fabric, but my bag absorbed some moisture from my breath near the chin and froze over night. Also, the hood cinch loosens easily if you move around. Lastly, the bag doesn't have a temperature guide printed on it like my other TNF bags, so not sure if this is a "true" -20⁰ bag or if that's the extreme limit.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this bag in negative temperatures it kept me plenty warm. In fact I was hot most of the night. The zipper is the worst part about the bag. It snags easily I was afraid I would tear the bag.
I bought this bag for $480 (!) from the REI Used website (which I love--it was even professionally sanitized as part of the purchase price!). I haven't tried it in the cold yet but I wanted to post a review because it had so many negative reviews about the zipper. The zipper is OK, it does get stuck if you're not careful, but so do the zippers on my other bags. So it seems like a minor issue to me. The thing I do like about the zipper is that there is only one pull (as opposed to other bags where there is a pull on the inside and another on the outside), but the slider is designed so that it can be flipped to the inside of the bag and pulled up while your hands are in the bag. So that is a neat little design feature. Also a zipper pocket on the inside to keep electronics warm. The pocket is not big enough for my phone but it can be used for smaller electronics, and I can keep my phone in the chest pocket of my puffy anyway. I like that the pocket zips, because the pocket in my zero deg bag doesn't zip which makes it useless for a restless sleeper like me. This bag comes with a compression sack which is a first for me. Lastly, I like the center zipper because it allows me to create space around my mouth and nose more easily. I always struggle with side zips and have to pull the whole thing down below my chin which is uncomfortable. If the bag turns out not be as warm as advertised I'll come back and update this review but it certainly seems very cozy.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using the sleeping bag while van living and camping in the High Rockies. I have tried it on -26 C and it has proven to be very warm. No disappointments there. I only give it 4 out of 5 stars because the zipper gets stuck a lot, pretty much every time I pull it up or down. It could definitely have a better material, be stronger.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am happy with my new Inferno sleeping bag. My only issue is the short zipper, don't understand that idea at all. It is nice to be able to open the bag as blanket or even to air it out. Other than that I am very happy with it and love the red color
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The warmest sleeping bag that I have ever used. Perfect for my trips to Alaska/Denali great weight vs how warm is the bag. The straps to fix the bag with the pad is awesome.
