Great for two e-bikes, easy to assemble
We were pleasantly surprised by the Yakima rack. It's cheaper than the competition, while the quality seems excellent. It was easy to put together. It took us about an hour and half to set it up and adjust it to our specific bikes. I am not the strongest, but I was able to lift it up, so it's not too heavy. The on-ramp is also simple to use and stow away. It feels sturdy, but it's not heavy to move around. We have two heavy e-bikes, and one of them is pretty long (just at the limit of the 50" wheelbase, which is really the maximum length it could carry--see photo), but they both sit well on the rack. Also, the clamps that hold the bikes are very flexible in all directions, so it was easy to secure our low-step bikes. Our first trip was about 1.5 hours one-way on the highway, and everything was still well-secured at the end of our trip. Definitely happy with the purchase!
Great for Heavy Bikes but could be Better
The Yakima photo showing the vertical stabilizer centered on the rack frame is a misrepresentation of the product. The stabilizer is welded on the left side of the rack and makes it a serious hassle to secure bikes in opposing directions and makes it really hard to secure our step throughs. A sliding stabilizer is the answer. An accessory suggestion: Yakima could offer fat tire trays that can accommodate 4" tires that attach to the metal trays using the same screw holes as the stock trays. With these changes Yakima could have a true winner. 5 stars for the sturdy build and being able to carry two 60lb bikes. 2 stars for the stabilizer location misrepresentation on Yakima's website.
Fragile Plastic
Bought this bike rack for two electric bikes. I only moved the bikes once. But so far I have had the plastic "windshield screw" that holds the cable for the pull pin to the rack break. And when closing the truck slowly, it tapped the flexible plastic strap on the top holder and shattered that. I don't get how this thing can be so fragile. It was also not very stable. When transporting the bikes, you could see them bob up and down. I had the 1.25' version in a hitch of the same size. I tried to warranty the screw, and they could not send me a replacement. Because they use excess units to strip for parts. They don't have any excess units to do this with. So they can't honor the warranty on the strap either. So I am returning the product. Given the state of the market and the racks available to hold ~40-60 lb e-bikes, there is not a lot of options. It's a shame. This could have been an easy win in the market. Going to wait for the Thule EasyFold to come back in stock I guess.
1800 mile trip and rock solid
I bought the on ramp for my 2E bikes. It was one of the few hitches that had the capacity to handle the weight of the bikes and accommodate fenders. My first try out was a trip from Minnesota to Arizona in January and was fantastic. Minor annoyances include Having to buy a special strap to accommodate my fat tire bike, and the cumbersome nature of the screw bolt that attaches the hitch to the vehicle. All in all however excellent product and I strongly recommend.
A good design costs money
This is a well designed rack, though very expensive. An e-bike is ease to load using the ramp. Though the clamps are not very tight on the frame, but they are secure. The wheel trays have good adjustability to help position the frame to get a good location for the clamp, this worked well on our step thru frame. The rack for the 2" receiver is heavy, 40+ lbs. This is required to handle 120 lbs of e-bikes.
Complicated
Cons= main arm you pull up that holds the clamps is not centered, witch drastically limits the area you can find to attach the clamps. If you do find a place to clamp on to, you them turn the knob at the end of the clamps with is very difficult to turn. If your hand is sweaty at all your going to aft to wrap a towel around the knobs just to turn them, there to small & hard to grip & turn!! The tilting feature is basically just to use when the rack is empty. It would take two people to do this with bikes loaded. This rack is overly complicated & not the best design. Pros= It is a sturdy rack. Ounce you get your bikes on, it will hold them well & doesn’t rock back & forth. I returned mine after the first trip I took & went with the Kuat NV 2.0 2-Bike Hitch Rack with is also rated for Ebikes.
dont bother
two pieces broke first use. the plastic bit at the end of the ramp and the keeper leash for the safety pin broke off from the rack. It takes two people to tilt, it is klunky to load, and a contortionist event to secure all the pins and cable lock. The ramp is too narrow for 2.1 inch tires, the straps are too short for even that small of tire, but they'll gladly sell you some that are long enough for some extra $$. How about just putting one size fits all straps on to begin with? What would 8 more inches of plastic cost to manufacture? Ergonomics are not well laid out. the ramp is theoretically a good idea but getting loaded and unloaded is a pain. securing the bikes to the suppport is also fiddly and not well designed. i am returning after just dry running it in the driveway. i have an older yakima full swing that is wonderfully engineered and trusted the brand. this one missed the mark.
An ebike must have.
Really a nice and easy bicycle carrier. It’s easy to attach to the vehicle and using the ramp to roll my ebike on is so simple. Even for a 75 year old like me.
plastic nut and bolt is used, very disappointing
I believe this is the most expensive bike rack sold in REI, but I found they are using plastic nut and bolt which broke the 3rd time I pull off the pin that hold the platform. Luckily I have some spare nut and bolt from fixing my car. Just to be a bit specific, the nut and bolt that broke is not load bearing, it is used to connect a string that hold the pull out pin (which is load bearing) when you are tilting the rack. I give it a 3 star for easy of loading heavy electric-bike.
Nice Rack, Mis-Leading Description
The Bike rack works as advertized and holds both an e-bike and traditional bike firmly. Howeververy, the "SKS" is mis-leadnig. Single Key System would indicate more then indicate more then one lock. Reviews noted a lock for both the bikes and the hitch. This is NOT true. It is one lock. On my 2021 Cheve Pick-up with a factory receiver hitch, there is no way to attach the locking cable to the hitch pin. This is single lock system, not a single key system. There are locks available from Yaselected kima for the hitchpin but it's another $30-$60 plus dollars. One of the princple reasons I purchased this rack was to be able to lock the bick rack to my truck. Without a hitchpin lock the entire rack could be stolen by unscrewing the bolt provided. I expected better from Yakima when spending almost $800
