Great first gravel bike
I currently own a Cannondale Synapse that I bought from REI about 10 years ago. The bike is great but a little challenging and rough when on local DC area bike routes with my family. I bought the Cannondale Topstone 3 as my first gravel bike to use on these rides and so far it’s been a great decision. The trails are more manageable and my confidence on the Topstone is day & nite from the road bike. I get the position and feel of my road bike with the confidence of a hybrid or light mountain bike. Plus it’s a Cannondale which is a superb brand and solid performance. Highly recommend this bike to those looking for a gravel bike.
Great All Rounder
I've been brainwashed into thinking thinner tires were faster and was a little worried about what I would experience. I was looking for comfort and this bike seemed to fit the bill. Personally I cannot tell the difference between thin and thick here. For me being able to add fenders was a great plus. If you are between sizes like I was, perhaps opting for the smaller one would be better. I chose the bigger one since the smaller one was out of stock. The reason I say this is because I feel like getting a shorter stem would make the bike perfect, and because the seat post will not go all the way down without chopping it. Grateful for the micro adjust, but you will need 2 differenct hex wrenches to adjust the angle and the height. Not sure if this was a Cannondale thing or not but front derailer needed adjusting right after leaving the store, the steering tube just five days later. Also, check the tightness right after purchase, some of my mounting bolts were loose. Finally, the bottom bracket bearings are offset inside the bottom bracket flange, a sure dirt/mud catcher but also will make servicing problematic. Take a close and see if you can live with this.
