I recently switched to this mat from the NeoAir and it is a WORLD of difference. As a curvy woman who is a side sleeper, having the height was so helpful. On a thinner mat, I would wake up sore and I rested and I assumed that’s what backpacking was but I was so wrong. This mat makes a little noise and it did bother my partner, but the trade off is a wonderful comfortable nights sleep where you actually wake up feeling human! It’s a little heavier than other UL mats and it packs a little bit bulky but it is worth it in comfort. I was able to fall asleep on one side and not toss and turn to get comfortable and stay in a single position to sleep. No sore hips or lower back or shoulders.
This an excellent compromise between weight and comfort. I originally considered getting this for my wife, but her primary (perhaps only) use is car camping so I got her a bulky fold-up memory foam mattress instead. As I looked more closely at the stats, it seemed like it might be ideal for me for camping/backpacking and got it. It’s very close to what I wanted: the thickness, width, length, weight, and overall comfort are just what I wanted/needed. The only drawback is the noise. It’s not the noisiest air mattress out there, but it’s not quiet either. It’s not Lays Potato Chip bag crinkly; it’s more of a Veggie Straw bag crinkle—deeper, less irritating, but still fairly crinkly.
The gold standard in backpacking sleeping pads is the NeoAir XLite, however it is criticized for being "loud". I own a NeoAir XLite. My wife bought this pad. We had to return this pad because it was terribly noisy. My wife then tried my NeoAir...much quieter for how she used the sleeping pad. I think the problem is the covering. Yes the NeoAir sounds like a bag of potato chips when moving around (particularly if it is underinflated). But this Sea-to-Summit sounds like rubbing a balloon with any skin-on-pad contact. It was way more distracting. Yet Sea-to-Summit advertises this as "quiet".
If bulk in your pack matters to you, then maybe go with a Nemo Tensor, otherwise, this pad is amazingly comfortable! I think the thick denier and the type of insulation this used (synthetic) is what makes this much more bulky than something like a Nemo Tensor or Thermarest NeoAir. The 4” width feels amazing, but I wish for this bulk, the r-value would be a little higher than 3.5. I don’t have many other complaints, as this gives me a great nights sleep above 40°F. I’ll add: the valve system is super easy to use to both inflate and deflate. Probably my favorite valve system.
I am side sleeper & a "curvy" person. While this pad was only 1/2 thicker than the pad I previously used, the way it is made makes it feel much thicker. I no longer toss & turn b/c of my hips at night. While this pad is a little on the pricier side, it's well worth the money for the comfort it gives. It's also lightweight! The only negative I see is that the way the air chambers are made, makes it a little harder to deflate the mattress. Other's say it's noisy, but honestly, I found it no more noisy than any of the other 2 pads I have previously tried out.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I ordered this pad after doing a lot of research in preparation for a long distance hike on the appalachian trail. I did a week long trial hike with all my gear, and this pad was a charm. I knew being in my tent or in a shelter wouldn't be like my bed at home, but a decent pad could make the difference between a good and bad night's sleep. Well, this pad did the trick. I ordered the large for the extra width, and I wanted the 4" thick padding, plus insulation. Best decision I have made so far. I was not uncomfortable once in my 6 day hike, even in 35° temps. Although its not as quiet as it claims to be, I would recommend this product.
I bought this pad after sleeping on a noisy and cold pad in the summer. I bought the women's pad that is wider for my comfort. It is extremely comfortable sleeping in any position. My hips never touched the ground when on my side, but I did not have it blown up fully which is better. I was warm in 30* weather with high winds. The pad is so much quieter than my previous pad. I LOVE this pad. Best sleep on the trail yet.
I am an active sleeper flipping from back to side. I carry my weight in my hips and my hips siding bottom out on this pad. I am a very light sleeper and noticed NO noise with this pad except if I was trying to scoot my whole pad and sleeping bag and body to center of tent - not a movement you’d do often. Much quieter than the potato chip bag pads. I was impressed by a YouTuber that rigged up a thermal camera and controlled heating environment. This pad outperformed it’s r-value. I think I can add a thin foam pad to get me a little deeper into the shoulder seasons. I slept in 40 degree weather with it and was toasty warm. I got the women’s large bc I really wanted 25” width. I honestly considered waiting until the rectangular wide version of this pad comes out but the mummy shape was more than roomy enough for me. Very happy with this pad!!! If I had to say a negative about it - it is bigger when rolled than I imagined. So it takes up some volume. I was coming from a cheap non-insulated pad which was small when rolled so I may have had unrealistic expectations. The pump sack is a dream. Literally took 3 breaths to inflate mattress. Heck my pillow takes more than that!!! Lots of good YouTube videos for this pad.
I used this pad over the weekend, and I have to say it’s the best. I’m a side sleeper and I was expecting my hip to hit the ground, and to my amazement it didn’t!!! I was thrilled! I got an amazing night sleep! No back pain! No Soreness! It’s light weight, Easy to use! It took a little longer to blow up it up using their bag method, but it was completely worth it because of the comfort! It has changed my camping experience and made sleeping on the ground not a painful experience! I also did not feel the cold ground either! It was well insulated!! Definitely worth the money!! So, Thank you!!!
I bought this mat awhile ago, first I got the Men’s and the woman’s wasn’t out yet. So I’ve used an ether light for 2 seasons of short through hikes. Just completed the JMT week ago and I slept like a baby. I sleep on my back and both sides . I combine this app it’s a 20 degree quilt. To have 4” at just barely over a lb is worth that extra oz or 2. The stuff sack doubles as an inflation bag. I also keep my sea to summit UL pillow in it. Pillow lock system is great as well. I’ve now hiked over 200 miles and it has not let me down. To protect it from sharp objects underneath I use an 1/8” UL foam pad that weighs virtually nothing. It adds thermal insulation too.
