Loud and easy to use, easy to turn off

I carry this on my bicycle to protect me from dogs on my gravel rides. It is small and light weight, and should provide me with a surprise for the dogs, as I grab my water bottle to spray them in the face (only if needed, of course).

Doesn't work out of the package!

As a female runner/hiker, I was really excited about this product for peace of mind. However, upon opening it - it didn't work! I expected a very loud siren to go off (as described) and it was barely audible. I tried pushing on what I thought were buttons (really speakers) and I could hear it slightly more. I'm going to try and replace the batteries, but pretty annoyed it doesn't work with the batteries it came with. Also, I'm pretty skeptical of the slide on clip that will hold it to my pack. Seems like it would just slip off and not be useful at all.

Good idea but needs some redesigns

I was excited about this product because I run alone a lot, and I bought 2 of them. On the positive side it seems durable. My first disappointing thing about it was that it is not super loud. It says it is as loud as an ambulance, but it is not even as loud as a car horn. However it is loud, so I was still OK with that. During my second week of running with it, it somehow fell off of the pocket I had clipped it too and I had to spend an hour running back to look for it. Luckily I found it. I'll have to figure out a way to secure it better. I like the idea of this, but it should be louder and the clip should be tighter.

Loud and Secure!

The ripcord siren is loud! The ease of use is perfect. I was able to pull the pin and push it back in with no effort. I wore the record siren on my Nathan vest for 15 miles of running and it stayed perfectly secure! Would love to see this with a flashing light as well as the siren. I’m a very early morning runner. I’d like to be seen and heard if in trouble. Great job on this device! Works perfectly as intended!

Not as loud as expected

I finally remembered to bring the personal alarm on my walk/run this morning. I clipped it on the top of my shorts, which was slightly bothersome. It would be better clipped to a hydration vest or running belt, neither of which I had for my short outing today. I did a test and it was easy enough to pull the cord (and replace), but I didn’t feel that it was loud enough to attract attention if I was in trouble.

Needs a couple tweaks

I bought this back in May and although I've never had to pull it, it has given me a sense of security when I wear it on my Nathan vaporhowe hydration pack. I do have some suggestions for the designer for the next version. 1) improve the clip. This has fallen off a couple times. 2) improve the zip pull at the bottom. The other day, I noticed it was missing! It had fallen off! Can you imagine if I had an emergency and went to pull the tag and it wasn't there? It's upsetting to think about. I solved this problem by putting a twist tie (like how you close bread) in the loop and making my own tag. Still rating as a 4, assuming it would save me in an emergency, and I like having a sense of security.

I wish I didn't need it, but glad I have it...

Unfortunately, I decided to get an alarm after a park ranger was warning hikers about a man who attacked a woman with a baby on the trail earlier that day. I got two, one for each of our cars so I always have one on hand. Be sure to test it before you head out because one just made a clicking sound. Love that REI is so great about returns! Easy to use (the pin just pulls down, not out) and, although if I have to use it success is dependent on strangers to look toward the sound and hopefully intervene, I do feel safer.

Small but mighty siren

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It's small, it's lightweight, you won't even know it's there. This siren is loud and effective in emergency situations, and gives me and my family peace of mind.

Good design but poor durability

I wanted a personal alarm to scare dogs away while riding my bicycle. Chose this product because it could be clipped to my jersey. Worked great for that purpose. When the batteries died I replaced them this morning, but now it doesn't work. I can very faintly hear the alarm going off when I hold it very close to my ear. So now I am not even sure the old batteries were dead; perhaps there is simply an issue with the alarm itself. I believe I bought it about a year ago, maybe two at most. Don't think I'll purchase this brand again, even though I really like its design.

Not Worth the Purchase

I guess it a little loud, but for the price and a stand alone product, its very underwhelming.
