How to Choose Sleeping Bags for Backpacking

Classic mummy-bag design isn't ideal for the 70% of people who sleep on their side. The men's NEMO Forte 35 sleeping bag adds room at the elbows and knees for 3-season, side-sleeping comfort.

Spent a few nights in this bag. Temperature rating seems accurate and the bag is spacious enough. However the "gill" zippers love to eat the inside fabric. With my bag, this happened to such an extreme that pulled the fabric all the way into and across the zipper trolley and it started to shear the inner fabric away from a seam. I've only used the gills twice and the left side gill ate the fabric both times. This is extremely disappointing as it damages the sleeping bag and makes one of it's advertised features completely useless. Maybe I just got a lemon. Either way, I'm not impressed.
Spent 2 months finding the perfect 2lb, 3 season, sleeping bag. I’d never considered a Nemo before but after a failed 1st attempt with a coveted brand, they landed on my radar for bag width (not a big guy, just like a bit of room at night). This Nemo hits on every point; weight, volume, temp, size. In addition it’s packed with rich features like a stash pocket on the chest and a pillow pocket built into the hood! Had a chance to break this in on a recent late winter desert trip with night time temps in the mid 40’s. Half way through the night I had to open my bag and let one arm out. I can safely say this is of the lost comfortable bags I’ve been in, can’t wait to take this into the GC in 2 months!
I'm 5'11" 275lb. I wanted a bag I could move in and this fits the bill. As a large size side-sleeper, this is comfortable and has plenty of space with the vents zipped. I purchased the long size for the extra room but could have made due with the standard size. I haven't used it at low temps yet, but it is definitely warm at a low of 60º. I'm impressed at the light weight for a synthetic bag of this size. My only dislike is that it does not attach to my pad so I tend to wiggle right off it during the night. In warm weather, I could throw a sheet on my pad and use this bag as a blanket at be very comfortable.
This is a review of the packing size only. I have not used this in the wild yet to test the insulation. I bought this for its packed weight to use on Bikepacking (and backpacking). I was bummed in how bulky this packs even with the compression bag. Fully compressed in their bag it is still nearly 14" x 8.5" making it much too thick to get into most bags for a bike. I used to have an REI bag which packed to a similar length, but was much thinner side-to-side which gives me flexibility for smaller pack options you have for bikepacking. The weight is really great in terms of backpacking and I think it would fit into most 40-50L+ bags without much issue. I am going to try to find a different compression bag that is less squat to see if that fixes it as I really like the sleeping bag design. All that said, I loved the space this bag has when I tested laying it in. I'm a side sleeper and got this for that reason as I hate how constricted most mummy bags can be on your lower legs and feet. I still might keep this for camping and backpacking but definitely have to find something that is packs more compact for my bikepacking trips.
This bag was much warmer than I expected it to be. The first night I was out, the temperature went down to 28 F and with my thermals, I stayed warm. I have used this bag now on a few trips and I have yet to find an issue other than the packed size. Being a larger guy, it was difficult to find a bag that fit me just right, but this one definitely fit the bill. I was able to roll around with a fair amount of ease and had plenty of room at the foot box.
Used my new sleeping bag for the first time this past weekend, an overnight sail to the Chanel Islands. Overnight low was around 40 degrees, my bag is rated to 35. Slept in a long sleeve cotton tee shirt and sweat pants, perfectly comfortable. Neither too hot nor too cold, just right. Nailed it!
Overall, sleeping bag is very comfortable material. I camped 3 nights straight, when the weather was 85/60. Going to bed at night was boarderline uncomfortable, but, this bag material really made it feel much better. The reason it is 3star.....Im an average size Man, 5'9" - 210lbs. I am a side sleeper, and toss and turn. This sleeping bag was very tight on my body. There was hardly no extra room inside, even to move my arms to a different position. I felt pinned down inside it, fully zipped. Maybe this is the design to keep the material close to the body, so the body heat stays in....not sure, but it was uncomfortable at times.
The Forte does have a Classic Spoonâ„¢ shape that is tailored for weight shaving warmth. Thank you for leaving a review!
I am a big guy. 6'2" and about 250lbs. Bag fit me well. Sturdy build and good materials.Nice built-in accessories like stuff sack, collar, and internal pocket. The gills give some temperature regulation options and provide a little more room inside.
I compared this Night 1 vs Night 2 with a Big Agnes Buell 30 mummy bag for size and comfort. I thought the NEMO was much more comfortable for my size and for sleeping on my side. Both were fine for the temperatures, from 46-52 degrees at night. I especially appreciated the large neck draft collar on the NEMO compared with the fixed in place draft collar on the Big Agnes bag.
Bag compresses down really well, easily fitting into the sleeping bag compartment of a backpack. Conveniently comes with both a stuff sack and compression stuff sack. I'm 5'9", the bag is the prefect length, any taller I'd recommend getting the longer version of this bag. I've so far tested this bag at 45 degrees, very warm at that temperature.
