I was looking for a light weight every day shoe. Something a bit more durable than the cross trainers that I wear every day. Shoes are comfy, light and look nice. if you haven't tried them on, the arches seem really high. At first, I actually felt like I was wearing some gimmicky orthopedic walking shoes that have rounded bottoms that force you to roll your foot from heal to toe. After wearing them a ew times, the sole has softened up and they don't feel so 'round'. I mix them into my jeans and polo routine.
More of a casual shoe than a hiker. I tried it on a day hike and the lack of support in the soul became noticeable on rough terrain.
I bought these to replace a similar pair of Solomon hiking shoes that were a bit small. Performance of these shoes, especially considering the price, is very good. I've worn them on 2-3 mile walks in my neighborhood as well as a couple 7-9 mile hikes in the high country.
lace loop broke in the first couple of months. should not leave the factory with faulty stsiching
After a month of moderate use the stitching is coming apart
I hike a fairly steep, 80% smooth, 20% light rocky, 5 mile trail every week. Sometimes twice a week. Some of the downhills I get a jog going. Needed to get out of the crosstrainers as my feet were taking a beating. These Merrell's did the trick. They provide great traction and cushion for the rocks/pebbles. I have slightly narrow feet and these run slightly wide, so I have to double up the socks. They do breath well. My primary complaint is that after 2 years I've worn the heal out (as well as much of the tread).
Very good arch support for those who need it. This shoe is great for the price. I wouldn’t recommend any strenuous or multi-day hikes, but it has worked better than expected for easy/moderate day hikes.
Just breaking them in to replace their 3 year old predecessors...
These were a gift for my nephew for a smoky mountain hiking trip. He loved them & used them a lot. They spent a lot of time in the water falls so kept his feet dry.
This Merrell has been my daily shoe for the past year and has endured a lot of abuse yet is still comfortable. Great on the asphalt paths as well as the rocks and roots of the Upper Peninsula! Yes, a bit stiff upon first wear, but conformed to my own foot quickly. This is a great value at this price! I am buying another pair to have in reserve when these wear out.
