I have had this bag for about 5 years and use it for camping and general travel use. The square shape is less efficient for heat retention and minimalist camping, but has other practical uses. I find this sleeping bag to be roomy, warm, and packable for shorter backpacking trips. The square shape is also useful as it can be unzipped to act as a blanket. I think this is a great general purpose summer bag and would recommend to anyone that isn't too picky or weight conscious and needs a sleeping bag to be very flexible, inexpensive, and high quality.
My husband and I just took two of these bags on a 21-day rafting trip down the Colorado (late Sept to mid Oct). When it was hot, we used one bag below us and a sheet on top. When it was cooler, we zipped the bags together. They zip from the bottom middle up each side, so hubby could have his side open while I had my side closed, and we were both happy and cozy. I bought 9 liter stuff sacks instead of the larger ones they came with.
I just wanted a well-made, long lasting casual sleeping bag. The insulation is very good. But the zipper on both sides means there's always a zipper pressed against my face. And you don't need a draw strong on the top of a 40 degree bag. (Toggle also pressed against my face.) The weird strip of textured fabric around the top inside of the bag collects lint and makes it hard to roll over without the bag coming with you. And the bottom side of the bag is thinner than the top side, which means if you roll over and the bag comes with you, you get cold. It's all more annoying than my last bag, which was an older good brand rectangular 40 degree bag and basically just a nylon comforter with a zipper on it.
Okay, so I decided to go camping up at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado in mid June, and the nightly temperature was around 45 degrees. So, I decided to bring this bag because it’s rated to 40 degrees. Around 2am I woke up freezing, and had to put on a hooded sweatshirt and an extra pair of wool socks. I was sleeping on an REI sleeping pad which I’ve been using for years, so I know that wasn’t the issue. I’ve used this bag before in the middle of summer at lower elevations when the nightly temperatures are in the mid 50’s, and it’s worked out just fine. But since this bag is rated for 40 degrees and was not able to keep me warm, I cannot recommend it.
First, a previous review still on this site is misleading, as the bags do NOT zip completely apart. That was one of the reasons I chose this bag. I had thought we could use them as separate bags in the future, a real plus. Perhaps I should have read all of the Qs and As in addition, but I think a review that states incorrect product information should be removed or a correction added. Also, the specs say that the compressed size is "unavailable," which is ridiculous, because rolled up into the sack provided it can easily be measured at 14" X 20" perhaps less than twice the diameter of two 40-degree bags rolled together, but pretty unwieldy for packing. There's really no "compression" further than the size of the bag provided.
After a fair amount of research I decided to purchase the the NF Dolomite 40 XL due to my stature 6’6”, 235lbs and the manufacturer’s reputation (I own a couple of NF jackets which I absolutely love). The bag’s length is great but the width is uncomfortably narrow! I wear a 46xl jacket and am a 38” waist; I found no freedom of movement within the bag during the night. When I turned over the entire bag followed! I also felt the bag was poorly insulated. We camped in the foothills above Santa Cruz, CA over Labor Day weekend. Nighttime temps dipped into the mid-50’s but I was cold. I ended up donning a puffer hoodie and wore the bag around my waist to keep my South 40 comfortable enough to finally catch some Z’s. I’ll be returning the bag with any luck. If you are a larger than average mammal it may be wise to avoid this bag.
Bought these after returning some to LL Beans. These compress much smaller, are all nylon (not fleece or flannel inside), warm, and zip together. Only color was Orange, which is is a bit bright, but at least you know you’ll be safe sleeping outdoors in hunting season.
Light weight, durable even with my four legged thinking it's hers, warm and packs small. I would recommend this bag. I love that it fully unzips as well.
I bought two of these bags for tent camping at state parks. The zipper broke on first use on one of the bags. Both bags were worthless around 50 degrees. The bags are pretty narrow, so if you’re a stomach sleeper, you won’t have any room. And if you toss and turn, this bag will follow you around and become a twisted mess.
As normal, North Face delivers a quality product! Light weight and the zipper is sturdy. It does packs smaller than the bag that came with it, so I also put my NF down vest into the bag. The only negative is that the temp rating is a bit optimistic. The temp got down to 45 degrees and I had to put on a fleece pullover.
