Great pack for small kids

I bought this for a very tiny skinny 8 year old (45 lb, 48"). At that time the waistband didn't cinch down small enough for him, but we only put 11lbs in the pack and his first trip he carried it 3 miles in, 5 miles out the next day (big loop). He's now 9.5 (58 lb, 52") and the waistband finally fits. His shoulders are so narrow that the shoulder straps are still a bit too wide, but he's easily able to carry his 14 lb for 10 miles round trip (a collared shirt helps with rubbing on his shoulders). He carries a 3L water bladder. Obviously the pack is only half-full and he will be using this for a LONG time. I think the waistband goes down to about 23 inches. I highly recommend this pack.

Fits perfect

My middle son (age 11) is super skinny. The adjustable nature of this pack is perfect and the waist belt fits well. With as many ways to add more space to the outside it will grow with him. Plenty of room for sleeping bag, pad and he could even carry our tent if needed. There is an area for his water bladder and he loves the "snack pocket." His little brother borrowed it and it worked for him too (age 9) to pack for a week at cub scout camp and carry to the camp site comfortably, so we are buying another.

Fits smaller bodies better.

We settled on the Fox 40 after trying out the Osprey Ace 50 and the REI Tarn 40. Neither of these could adjust small enough for our 8 year old. Both the Osprey and the REI have mesh pockets on the sides and on the front and we got a tear on side pocket of the Ace 50 on our first backpacking trip. The fox 40 just looks and feels way more durable than its competitors. It’s not as big but big enough to fit everything an 8 year old needs. He shouldn’t be lugging 30 lbs on a 6 mile hike anyway. I do wish that it came with a rain cover like the Ace and the Tarn. Having said that, we probably will not be hiking in the rain and I set up a rain shelter for our packs when we get to camp. It’s also slimmer than the other brands. Solid construction = excellent value and longevity.

Great for kids hiking and air travel

We got these for our 7 and 9 year olds for a trip to Europe. They were easily able to carry their own stuff for our 13 day trip. Fit nicely into the overhead bin on a flight. Also adjusted to even fit at 5"4. Can't wait to use them for hiking and backpacking this summer.

Great pack, would buy again.

I purchased this for my 9 year old daughter. The pack was very easy to adjust to her size and fit her well. It had plenty of room to pack all her essentials. She was comfortable on our Multi-day hike. She liked the belt pocket for keeping a snack within easy reach. She is 9 years old and in the 50th percentile for height and 45th percentile for weight for her age. There was still room left on the belt to tighten so likely could fit an even thinner child and definitely room to make larger. There appears to be plenty of room in this pack to allow her to grow.

Real pack - adjusts perfectly as they grow

We bought Two Deuter Fox 40s in 2013 for our then 7 and 9 year olds. Over the last 6 years they have seen a lot of use from hiking the full Long Trail (272 miles plus), to day trips, to winter camping. They have grown with our kids from pint size to bigger than I am. Yet, they are comfortable, versatile as ever, and still look near new. These packs are the real deal. The back straps are highly adjustable making it easy to dial in a perfect fit. In fact, on 15 mile days, I’ve been quite jealous. The fit is great and the load distribution, even at 20 plus pounds is perfect. Their size works for weeklong trips with ultra lite gear and yet doesn’t feel over sized for a day hike. My kids see themselves using their packs for years to come, so much so that I will buy a new one for my niece, because we won’t be handing them down any time soon even tough my oldest child is now 15 and close to her full size.

it’s freedom

She’s in a Girl Scout troop that hikes and camps. I’m the troop leader. This bag has the flexibility needed for a growing kid, and introduces her to how to love and care for a backpack. It has all the same pockets my bag has, it’s not the “kid menu” version of a pack. If I could get this for all the girls in my troop, I would.

Great for our 8 yr old!

Awesome for our 8 year old. He wanted a real backpacking backpack and this is perfect. Mostly because it has good pockets on the outside and he can't pack it too heavy unless he puts a bunch of stuff on the outside. We've used it 2 times backpacking. Had to pack dad's a little heavy but it was great to have him help and he loved it.
