Got this for our almost 8 year old. He is 51” tall and approx. 60 lbs. It worked perfectly! I’d say he has an average torso length and he was on the smallest setting for the height of the shoulder straps on the frame of the pack. We fit a sleeping bag, all of his clothes, his sandals, a water bottle, some food, our toiletries, a headlamp, and a fishing pole for a 2 night trip. He carried 12 pounds in it, which is 20% of his body weight. I think that’s maybe more than is recommended for his age, but he didn’t seem top heavy or wobbly or complain. It was easy to adjust all of the straps and it had a lot of helpful compartments that were easy to use. Last year he took an REI Tarn 18 and this was a good jump from that. Definitely recommend this well made pack!
Our kid is 4'10" and 70 pounds. This pack fit him perfectly and was great for a rugged day hike. We climbed 700 feet crosscountry over rocks and downed trees. He hopped and skipped the whole way and carried our lunches. I was especially surprised that he had no complaints about it being uncomfortable. The waist band and chest band did their work beautifully. (Don't worry, we carried water and camera gear, he had it easy) It was a great introduction to a longer, more demanding hike. Hoping to take him on a multi-day backpacking trip soon.
I bought this as a bday present for my five year old nephew so I could take him on his first backpacking trip. All he carried was his sleeping bag and his clothes, adults carried the rest. It fit him pretty great given he is a skinny guy, was comfortable, and had all the desirable features of an adult pack (hip pads, hip pockets, chest strap, brain, sleeping bag pocket, and more.). Yes, it’s expensive for a kids item but it is high quality and will last for lots of trips and grow with him. Blue color was lovely.
