Neo Is a Game Changer

I have never liked being on a trainer......until now. I have used multiple trainers, including other smart trainers and none compare to the NEO. When I did my research, all of the key cycling review websites were ranking NEO the best. Crazy quiet (all I hear is my chain), very accurate in terms of wattage etc, and it simulates different road conditions - which at first I thought was a bit gimmicky, but it actually was really awesome. There is a reason this trainer is getting fantastic reviews.

Tacx Neo noise and support issues

I made a November 2017 purchase of a Tacx Neo primarily for it's touted quiet drive. It performed as advertised except for a high pitched resonance when driven at gearing and cadence equivalent to 20 plus MPH. Considering buying? Please Google tacx neo whistling noise and watch the 22 second uTube video that matches my experience. Tacx offer no phone or interactive customer support other than email to Netherlands headquarters. They promise to answer within 6 working days. Their response- "This sound that the NEO makes is created by air that flows trough the trainer making this whistling noise. So to speak it is perfectly normal" When I responded that I didn't see this as an acceptable answer on a premium product sold based on quiet operation, I received no further response from Tacx. I return the Neo and replace it with a lower priced overall quieter unit from Cyclops.

Super quiet trainer (mine has had no noise issues)

Going on 2nd season of winter training 6+ hours a week and it's still working perfectly. Quietest trainer by far but also the most expensive

Quiet

Except for the noise coming from my own bike, the Tacx Neo itself is very quiet when riding on smooth surfaces. With doors open, people in other parts of the house don't even take notice. (When road surface simulation is enabled it can get loud riding on rough surfaces at high speed.)

So far, so good

I've had the Neo for about 6 weeks now, and it has worked pretty well for me, being driven by Zwift. I have not had the issue with the high pitched sound (so far), and I'm pretty sensitive to sound, I would have noticed it. There are some videos on YouTube that talk through pulling the disc with the magnets on it and reseating it for better alignment. Hopefully I won't ever need to do that. I did have to make sure the cassette was pretty tight on the hub on the Neo, to reduce drive train noise, but once that was done, the overall operation is quite silent. I'm comparing with a Minoura rim drive magnetic trainer, which was already fairly quiet. With my setup, I could not get the road surface feedback to work properly though the ANT connection in Zwift. Changing to the BT-LE communication resolved that. I read that Tacx was moving away from the Edco hub, but the unit I recieved in April 2018 still has that hub. Since Edco is out of business, I expect replacement parts will be difficult, and if needed, I'll have to replace with the Shimano hub, All in all I like it so far.

Great purchase!

No doubt it’s expensive, but the thing is so darn quiet that it’s perfect for apartment living. I use it with Zwift, so the added benefit of it simulating riding gravel or across boards is pretty fun! I’m totally addicted now! It is heavy though, so wherever you put it, it’s likely to just stay. You won’t be picking it up to place in a closet when you’re done with your workout.
