Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ten Years Later I purchased a pair of these ten years ago and since then have put hundreds of miles on them. They were comfortable out of the box. They are still comfortable, the sole still grips well, and they are still waterproof. The ones I have use Gore-Tex though. I have used them for long backpacking trips, long day trips, scaling steep rocky hills, crossed rivers, etc. I have never had a blister in them or jammed toe nails. I'm purchasing another pair because the outer material is finally starting to degrade although it hasn't effected the waterproofing or comfort at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable Easy to wear right out of the box. I did slum in them for a couple of days before I hit the trail. Good traction on sandy trails and and treads do not pickup a lot of gravel so I don't really have to clean the shoe bottoms to go into the house. I do have hot sweaty feet but these boots handle that well. I'm not sure they are "boots" but more sturdy tennis shoes with good soles for walking. The soles are not stiff like boots I would wear to hike the JMT nor do they afford the ankle stiffness for bouldering and the like. But for walking in the local hills I'm really glad I got them-- light weight and breathable with good traction on gravel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfy, durable I bought these boots based solely off of the reviews. I was not lead astray. I love these boots so far and have put them through some serious usage over the past month. They broke in fairly quickly and are holding up nicely. I actually went a 1/2 size smaller than I normally do, for the more snug feel during steep incline/decline hikes. I'm glad I did. I definitely recommend checking these boots out. The only thing I'd change about them is maybe some odor control fiber material. But they do make socks that help with that. Very comfy boots. Still be careful on tree roots and wet rock surfaces. I notice a bit of scary moments on these things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A comfortable boot from the first step won out I spent an hour and a half with an REI associate who knows his boots, trying on half a dozen pairs to replace the REI boots that have done yeoman's work for years and been resoled twice. These Merrells tied for first place for comfort and were the lightest of the boots tested. The boots needed to dry out quickly, for hiking in rain forests in South America: Check. The Merrells were comfortable immediately; there was no "breaking in" period. And they have been comfortable on several hikes of various lengths since. Good flex, good support, good tread.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and comfortable Bought these to replace an older heavier pair. Right out of the box I hiked 15 miles over some very rough terrain and had no issues whatsoever. Boots are light, very comfortable, and provide excellent support. I highly recommend them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't expect waterproof for long I have had 2 sets of Merrill "waterproof" boots. Both failed to be waterproof in less than six months. First pair had a couple more than 100 hiking miles on it. The second was mostly short walking. I will not buy another pair of merrells again try keen boots

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Comfortable boot, not waterproof I have a feeling that a number of these boots had QC issues. My pair immediately failed the water hose test. I put boots on, and shower them from a water hose. Normally the GTX boots shed water instantly, although some may develop leaks soon when I start wearing them, particularly on the bends where the toe box is. These leaked when water touched their surface, as if they were not waterproofed at all. Back to the store they went. I traded them in for the obsolete Moab-1 waterproof, which are really waterproof so far. The boots are a comfortable fit, for me they required no break-in period at all.

Does the waterproof version run smaller than the standard version?

Asked by: scott
Yes, I had to order a half size up to get a proper fit. According to their website, the waterproofing material takes up some room.
