Super light and super cool. However, punctures VERY easily. Be careful around sticks, rocks, a book you happen to be reading, and anything else you may find outdoors. The fabric isn't tear resistant so a small (patchable) hole could turn into a large (not-patchable) tear very quick. Great product. Fits the design of a light-weight, two person pad but taken to an extreme where the durability isn't there. For the price-point, I'd expect a little something more. This is somewhat expected from an industry's high-performance gear, but the tradeoff was not worth it to me. I am going to try the non-HL version even if it is a pound heavier.
I'm from Colorado and spent a lot of time in the high country. When I came across this i though oh cool that seems very well thought out. I have a new four season tent I bought and it fits the footprint of both my Nemo Kunai 2P and north face tadpole 23. I have not used it with another person but just the fact that it maximizes my sleeping surface area was good enough to give it this rating. Simple and anyone can get excited about using new gear. It's thick enough and packs small enough for actual backpacking. I think what sets this apart is it works independently and I like that. Pleased with my purchase but has to perform in the elements.
We bought our HL Duo a year ago in March and have used it almost every weekend since then on bike packing, kayak camping, and hot spring chasing trips and LOVE that it fits our Vela comforter perfectly. We throw a double silk sheet on it and are able to sleep next to each other very comfortably. The last two trips, we noticed one side was losing air. Since our purchase we past REI's one year warranty, I contacted Exped directly and they asked that we send the mat in for repair. Unfortunately, the mat has a damaged baffle and is beyond repair. Fortunately, Exped stands behind their product and a new mat has been ordered! We will definitely be looking for Exped products when we are shopping for camping pads with REI!
I love my xlite & my xtherm, but when backpacking as a couple this thing is my favorite. If we bring two xlites we're at 12 oz each (24 total) for 5 oz more the Exped Duo gives us a much more comfortable nights sleep by removing the all terrible gap. Even with straps to hold two pads in place, one person inevitably ends up sleeping partially in the crack between the pads, or if you have a two person bag, the insulation can be noticeably less over the gap. With a solid two person pad, we've been able to shift to using a two person quilt, which saves tons of weight and let's us share body heat. The Duo's separate air chambers really do keep us from noticing when the other person rolls around. The larger bumpers on the sides do make a difference in helping keep us from rolling/slipping off the pad in our sleep and the orientation of the air chambers makes the pad more comfy for side sleepers. Lastly, I'd add that it inflates pretty quickly with the extra inflation bag. We love this thing and have been able to shave a lot of weight by converting to a backpacking quilt thanks to the great insulation this pad provides by resolving the curse of the two pad crack : )
We use the smaller version of this pad with a Feathered Friends Spoonbill duo sleeping bag for late fall/winter/early spring - and the large version of the pad with an Enlightened Equipmen Accomplice quilt when the weather is warmer (I know, excessive but we love to just sprawl out on that huge pad!) So warmer weather use is great, love it, love it! Cool weather to cold weather well.... We "like it a lot." The pad is rated as an R 3.3 and for down to 21F. Our previous pads were Xlites rated at R 3.2.... they were MUCH warmer in cold weather. I think they have a Mylar sheet bonded in them that reflects your body warmth back. This is much more effective than the insulation bonded to the inside of the Hyperlite duo. If the ground is cold, the "down" side of you will be cool. Keep in mind that our F2F Spoonbill has no under insulation, just nylon between you and the pad. With a regular bag YMMV! Would we recommend it? Absolutely! We have never slept so comfortably- well unless on really cold ground- in our 40 years of hiking and backpacking!
We have spent about 12 nights on this pad so far this summer and I love it. The good: with this pad we can sleep using our double quilt (made by a cottage gear maker) and sleep with no gap in between the pads. While the double pad is not lighter than brining two single pads, using a double quilt definitely saves weight over two mummy bags, so the system is an overall weight saving system, and it is nice to be able to cuddle and share body heat. I find the pad comfortable but not as comfortable as a Thermorest Neoair thus I give this pad 4 stars. If they came out with a double Neoair, I would prefer that. If I were not using a quilt, I would probably just bring two separate Neoair pads. The pad comes with a bag (snozzle) which you use to inflate the bag. Ingenious! I works great but unfortunately it ripped on the third trip, but I called Exped and they replaced it immediately and were very polite. The bag can be used for other purposes since it is water proof (my husband uses it to store his clothes in his pack and he then uses that as a pillow with his extra clothes in it).
Purchased a different ex ped and the baffles separated. Company refused to replace. They may have solved the manufacturing problem, but I will be choosing a different company this time.
Easy to inflate and repair (dog nail got it just right). You can’t beat the small packing size but getting use to the snozzel to inflate it took some practice to be efficient. I’m 5’3” and my partner is 6’2” and we sleep comfortably on it. It’s been in the snow of the Rockies and in the marshes of the Boundary Waters. Definitely our favorite pad so far.
I carry the sleeping pad and my boyfriend carries the tent, it is perfect! Rather than putting two sleeping pads together that have a gap and keep sliding around we use one sleeping pad. We still sleep in separate bags but with this pad it is so comfy. We take this on every backpack trip.
Great pad. Super comfy and sleeps two people and a dog with plenty of room. With the pad inflated we were very happy with our outdoor sleep time. Even with a puncture resistant surface added to the pad Mr. Dog was able to rip a 10" x 3" in the UL material. He did a great job. Good boy. This pad is not dog friendly. As in if you have a dog I wouldn't buy this pad. Conversely don't buy this pad and then get a dog and use this pad.
