Excellent Backcountry Tent for 2 Adults

Used this tent in the high sierras this past summer. It turned out to be the perfect tent, great balance of weight, cost, roominess, weather worthiness, and durability. Poles were more than adequate, did not feel they were flimsy at all. Loved the full mesh body on the nice nights and the silpoly rainfly on the wet nights. The silpoly works so much nicer than silnylon, you dont have to worry about stretch and sag. We used it with 2 adults, 1 wide long pad, 1 regular width pad. Very roomy. Love the 2 side doors, I always hated crawling in from then end on my previous tents. We did go through a gail force sand storm one morning. The tent stood nicely where other tents in the camp collapsed. The tent did deflect on the up wind side, but not enough to cause discomfort inside. We did have sand blowing in under the staked out vestibule that did get through the mesh and into the tent....this was our only complaint about the tent all trip. It was probably done to save weight but it would have been nice to have 2 full size vestibules with 2 people, where this tent has 1 larger and 1 smaller one.

I managed to get this pretty cheap on closeout. I had to go to Marmot directly for the foot print. The weight is fantastic for such a roomy tent. There are a couple corners cut maybe too sharply to reduce weight though. The poles feel a bit flimsy. I even had one pole pop out at one of the joints while setting up the second time (didn't break, but still unnerving). The plastic bit that attaches the two poles together at the top broke within 3 uses, with very little strain. The mesh easily gets stretched. It comes with exactly 6 stakes, and there aren't any loops on the fly for additional guy lines which causes a little bit of a problem in heavy rain. That said, in heavy rain, really enjoyed the large vestibule space, there's a lot of extra foot and head room, and while I worry it can fall apart, it has been enjoyable for the price and pack weight.

Great tent!

We used this tent on a 5 night backpacking trip and could not be happier with it! It is lightweight and very easy to set up. I was hesitant to buy this tent because of another review stating the rainfly sits against the mesh and allows water in. Our tent did not have that problem and it kept us completely dry during a rainstorm. I was very grateful for this tent, especially when we awoke to find many of our neighbors soaked in their tents. There is a lot of space inside the tent - enough to keep our packs at the foot end. This is a great tent and I look forward to using it again in the future.

desapointed

Hi everyone, I bought my Marmot Tungsten UL 2p 10 months ago and was very happy when I received it. I used it during one very rainy week in New Zealand in june 2018, and then, for a couple of days (also rainy and stormy) in French Polynesia. It was perfectly waterproof and I was delighted. But I used it last month in Gabon, in tropical forest during rain falls and it was not waterproof at all, we were soaked the entire night. I looked at my tent a few days ago at home and noticed that all the roof sewings were falling apart, explaining my last bad experience. I'm really desapointed because I took care of it each time I used it, and I have not used it for so long. The weight, design, easy-using, indoor comfort were perfect but I need a tent that could keep me dry when it's raining outside… I add some pictures. If someone knows how I could repair it?

Great for multi-night adventures

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Took this tent on an extended hike along the Teton Crest Trail - worked great. Lightweight enough to manage for 5 days, kept out the rain/hail, and still allowed for air to move through and keep it fresh. Only problem was the marmots wanting to chew the tie down cords, but that's not the problem of the tent. Easy enough for one person to set up or take down on her own but with room for two that doesn't require a large footprint. Appreciated the privacy of the cover but having multiple points to open for airflow. See the photos (small orange dot is the tent!)

Great tent! STAKE IT DOWN ON MOUNTAINS

I write this review with great shame and sadness. Great tent. Very much like my well-loved (if a bit heavy) Aspen 2p, this tent is everything you would expect from Marmot: great quality, great price, and Marmot's warranty is awesome. That said, we only got to use this tent once for a Mt Rainier expedition. We set it up at Camp Muir in lovely weather, and failed to listen to that still small voice saying "you should guy it out with deadman anchors." LISTEN TO THE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD. Our tent, along with a Lithium 0° bag, another bag, two sleeping pads, and some other clothes and gear, are now dying a slow, crushing, shredding death at the bottom of a crevass in the Cowlitz glacier after taking a swift ride on the famous Rainier winds.

Great tent with a few little drawbacks

I’d like to start out by saying that I bought this tent for some pretty intense hiking and wild camping in the Lake District and the Isle of Skye in Scotland this Summer and here’s what I discovered. Even in the middle of the summer, the conditions over there can get pretty extreme with gusts easily getting 40-50mph at or near the peaks and was on and off all day and night. With that being said, it is very hard to pitch in winds that are blowing more that 20mph, especially if you plan to use a liner. You will have to guy out the tent in any sort of wind or it will easily tip over or blow away. Also, I think it’s necessary to mention that if you don’t stake out the tent completely the rainfly will flap around in any kind of breeze and gets pretty noisy. In calm conditions you can easily get away with just guying out the vestibules at both ends without staking out the whole tent. For a single person, I think it offers the perfect amount of space with a 25” wide matt and gear. Keep in mind that if it’s raining pretty hard you will want to bring most of you gear inside. The large vestibule is good size and allowed me plenty of room for boots, stove and hiking poles. It is worth noting that the other vestibule is considerably smaller and found it pretty useless. For two people, with no rain and clear weather this tent will be ok (still a bit on the tight side) as you will be able to leave your gear outside or in the vestibule. Weight wise, with the lightweight liner it comes in at a hair over 4lbs, which is definitely more that what the manufacturer claims, even with the liner. Had no issues with water coming in, the quality overall is very good and the tent itself looks great and blends in nicely with the environment. With all that being said and while I found this tent to be very good, I am still considering going lighter by purchasing an even more ultralight tent like the Nemo Hornet 2P or other tent under 3lbs.

Awesome for the size

Great tent, considering the size. We used to use BD Firstlight however over time got tired of the small size and lack of waterproofness (still love the firstlight for ski touring and fast and light alpine climbs). Used the Tungsten for about 20 nights now and am very happy with it - lot of space (i think for its weight it is the roomiest freestanding tent?), the vestibules are very useful, it held up well in a few storms in Wind Rivers, and it appears durable for such a lightweight tent. Also like the fact it is fully freestanding. The only nit would be that in heavier rain the sides can sag a bit, to the point of touching the inner slightly. Adding additional guy points would help.

For me, perfect.

I returned a sub 2lb. single entrance silnylon tent and chose this to 2p UL to replace it. Yes, this tent is 1.5 pounds heavier, but my hikes last 3 days, 2 nights. I can live with it. I won’t bad mouth the other tent as it is exactly what it claims to be. I’m just not a fan of silnylon after spending a rainy night in it. The Marmot suits me just fine. Just has way more room inside and has two roomy vestibules. For my type of outings I couldn’t have made a better choice. Easy up, easy down. If your hikes are like mine I would highly recommend this tent.

Pushed it

Took to Kilimanjaro- conditions at high camp included rain and blizzard. Use for just me but light weight gives me that luxury - love the interior space that allows me to bring gear in and keep gear dry. Height inside is a super plus for a UL tent. This 3 season tent held up to the winds and weather. Got a little wet (very little) but so did everyone in much heavier 4 season tents. Gave the tent to lead guide who, like me, uses UL tent in harsh high altitude when possible. Now I am buying a second in 6 months.

Great Tent that Punches Above its Weight!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! This tent replaced a much heavier, but well-loved "Brand-X" 2-man tent for backpacking. It's very small when packed properly, weighs next to nothing, and can withstand reasonable abuse without complaint. My only (minor) gripe is the fact that the tent takes a little longer to put up than simpler designs, but the extra poles greatly increase the livable space inside the tent. Just practice setup/tear down a few times and you'll be good. BONUS: Marmot doesn't market this as a four-season tent, but I contend that it does fine in the occasional (unexpected) blizzard.
