Tried and true
Ok, looking to add another Tarmac to collection as mine is now many years old and has endured extensive travels. Still going strong but we have a big trip coming up with graduating daughter and I want to buy another one for her to use and to eventually replace mine. These bags are so great for international travel. Light, plenty of space, sturdy - we carry on and check depending on situation, compact enough to lug up multiple flights of narrow staircases, smooth rolling for running from flight to train station and down cobblestone roads. We currently have two Tarmacs and an Osprey convertible and the Tarmac is by far the favorite.
Rubber corner broken on second trip
Sharp looking bag. It fits carry on requirements perfectly. The jacket holder straps work really well. Unfortunately the rubber corner of the bag cracked and broke on my second trip. The bag was used as a carry on both trips. Could have just been a bad molded piece of plastic.
Good Design, Terrible Zippers
I bought this suitcase for a lightweight carryon and "small airplanes overseas" suitcase in October 2013. Initially I was very happy with it, but this year I have had great difficulty with the zippers. They haven't broken, but have stuck. I can't get the expansion one closed, and on my last two extended trips overseas I frequently had great difficulyy getting the main zipper to close on the corner where material is fraying, and occasionally had trouble getting it to open at the same spot. I now consider it useless for any trip out of the country. I always had good luck with Eagle Creek products in the past, but am very disappointed with this one.
Great Bag For Frequent Traveler
The bag is sturdy and packs well with the Eagle Creek making system. Can easily travel for a week and carry all that is needed. Most importantly, for the frequent traveler you will never have to check your bag again as this bag fits on the regional commuters no leaving it on jet bridge and waiting again (key point in purchasing). I have owned several other Eagle Creek products and this company understands travel and back it with a lifetime guarantee. Solid bag and worth the money
A great bag.
I use this bag for business trips and it has been great. It carries every thing I need for a week long business trip without an issue. The construction of this bag is great. It is very sturdy and I am sure it will last a long time. My only complaint about this bag is packing it as suggested with the Eagle Creek Pack It system. The website gives you a suggestion for packing this bag and what products are required. I purchased all of recommended Eagle Creek products but they do not fit in the bag as shown. They will all fit if you make some changes such as putting the folder in the front compartment. Unfortunately that makes the front outside pocket of the bag very tight.
Falls Apart
Purchased in late 2018. Since has needed to be repaired twice from failure of exterior main zipper and interior velcro at the seams. "Lifetime warranty repairs" means you ship it back to a repair center states or countries away at your cost. Not worth the hassle / longevity for the high price tag.
Glad we picked this case
I did a lot of research, shopping online and in person prior to purchasing 2 of these for a 10 week trip we just completed. We chose the 'domestic' size and we did not have any issues on the 7 international flights we took to Japan, Australia and New Zealand. We never checked these bags. We had hoped we could travel w/just these and our day packs. That did not happen, as we took gifts for our hosts along the way and the temperatures spanned 40-109C for two hemispheres where we stayed for weeks at a time. We came home w/that checked case full of purchased stuff, as well. :-) These have two wheels, not four. I find it much easier to pull the two wheels on uneven surfaces. The zippers are very robust but sometimes are hard to pull around the curves of the main compartment. Having stated that, I never thought I was going to break it and it was certainly never in jeopardy of breaking from stress. I am a big fan of 'packing cubes' and think it's the best way to travel, something I learned just a couple of years ago, after traveling for business for almost 30 years. The cubes were a great way to organize this small case and locate what I needed w/o having to repack each time. I used the outside large pocket to stow my iPad and hubs used the inside sleeve for the MacBook. There's an easily accessible top small pocket for travel docs and toiletries. There are four additional features that make this bag really good. #1, the weight is only 7#'s but it is extremely durable. #2, there is this really easy to access coat clip that allows you to attach your jacket across the top where you want to put it BUT this keeps it from falling/dragging on the ground as you walk. #3, the case has a zipper that extends the area at the top to make it square, when you need that extra space. Several times, I opened up the space to pack it, zipped the case closed and then zipped the extended space closed to make it even smaller. I'm not sure that is the intension but it certainly took the strain w/no problems. #4, Lifetime guarantee. We're flying out next month for 10 days to Florida for the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise. We'll be taking these cases and day packs only......one season of clothing really helps. Our other options for purchase was Briggs& Riley. Those cases are wonderful but even as I watched for sales, etc I could not justify the costs. These are much more our style and we got 2 (watch for them on sale at REI) for the price of on B&R on sale.
best carry-on i ever had.
I did a fast trip, three planes international flight and this case was awesome. no issues with the wheels. held up okay, fit just fine in the overhead compartment. plenty of room and something that will last a long time.
Best Carry-on!
Great bag! This was a no-brainer for me, as I love Eagle Creek. My bigger, check size bag is the FlipSwitch and it's terrific. So when I wanted a new carry-on, I chose the Tarmac and I love it. Lightweight, lots of capacity and very sturdy and durable. I am a travel writer and travel and write for a living, so having the right gear is of utmost importance. You can't go wrong with this bag!
Top notch warranty and great standard cary on
I purchased this bag after all of my other bags broke after a year of use. I am a frequent traveler for work, greater than 50% of the time. So far after 1 month and 6 trips it has performed fantastically. The handle glide is buttery smooth and the rolling is the best I’ve used. The warranty provides piece of mind for years to come.
