I am a big Petzl fan and when they came out with this headlamp I really couldn't make the numbers work. Price is awesome, weight is awesome, Petzl makes great products, and it can be a rechargeable unit with the Core. I have upgraded to the Core battery also. We use this every night walking the dog as well as backpacking. I love how it starts on the low. The beam pattern is great for around camp, I like a beam that throws for night hiking which this lamp won't do, but it is adequate. I don't see a huge difference from medium to high, so I never really put it on high. The weight is great and the new low profile is a great design change.
Great for the whole family! They are a must have for all our Night hikes here in the desert.
I got one of these last year and used it when I hiked in Yellowstone and was in the Tetons. I also have one with a red light, but love this little one and I use it more than any of the others. After hiking season I started using it for barn chores in the morning and evening. It makes life a whole lot easier and the light lasted from November to February or early March on the same set of batteries. Considering I do chores morning and evening for more than an hour that's a good thing. It has great light for what you're doing immediately in front of you, and you can see a long way off with just a touch of the button putting it on the high beam.
Bought this on sale in an REI store to replace a very much older Tikkina model which had seen better days and was being held together with duct tape. So far I have only used it as a reading light so I don't disturb my wife when I stay up late reading in bed. The middle level of light is fine for that. So I haven't really tried it camping. I do intend to use it at outdoor music festivals and concerts that end after dark. I'm sure it will be great for that. I also like the color. I think anyone would be pleased with this headlamp as long as there are no unreasonable expectations for what a headlamp at this price point should do.
This little headlamp is pretty amazing! The 3 light level settings are great, low light is prefect for sitting by a fire and making dinner, the highest setting lights up a huge area! I have no doubt that if needed, I could hike out of the woods in the middle of a moonless night with no problems. Also, no annoying strobe feature! The light turns off with one push of the button once the desired light level is achieved, no need to cycle through the low/middle/high/off like other lights. Also, 20 bucks! How can you go wrong? Lightweight small and comfortable to wear, I highly recommend!
Love this headlamp! I didn't want something too big, but something that gives adequate lighting walking in the dark. It was a life saver walking my dog in the woods after dark (got lost, but was so thankful I brought this headlamp with me). In addition, it's a wonderful safety light while walking my dog at night in my neighborhood and oncoming cars (there are no street lamps). I also love the three dim options - have only kept it on the brightest which gives AMAZING light! And love that you can adjust it to see long distance or adjust to right in front of your feet and adjust anywhere in between. All this with keeping my hands free to hold my dog's leash and walking/running with my dog.
I have taken this camping once and I really like how bright this light is. I used a cheaper head lamp on the same trip. The comparison is night and day.... literally. The 3 levels of brightness on this head lamp make it very versatile and I would definitely buy this light again, not sure why would pay so much more for any other light. Also it has the hybrid battery option, which I haven't used but probably will.
Good headlamp, especially for the pricing compared to Petzl or Black Diamond. Good for some basic, light camping or night running/dog walks. No red light though, so if you're willing to spend the extra $10 to the Tikka. One step brighter, red night light, and has a circular glow ring so it's easy to find at night.
Premium price justified by the premium quality. A set of AAA Batteries lasts many hours on lot setting. The highest setting is very bright, love it! Happy with the purchase, expect to use it for many decades to come!
I got this because I wanted a backup for my Tikka XP 2 that I've had for years and is still going strong. This one is just as light, comfortable and simple to use. I love the brightness options and long runtime. it has the same style of button too, and that button has never turned on in my pack. I'm so glad they've stuck to a design that works.
