Wasn’t crazy about the price...200 frog skins!...but worth it. Just got done with a 55 miler on the the mighty Appalachian Trail with 12 hours plus of continuous night speed hiking. Able to get 12-14 hours out of a single charge on the lowest setting. The light that the Nano put out was more than adequate. The ability to fine tune the mode and intensity of the light, via the Petzl app is amazing. I would suggest purchasing another rechargeable Nano battery as a backup I was on the AT in the cold (30 degrees) and was able to get about 12-14 hours of light production. I switched over to my backup head lamp (Black Diamond) without issues. ANY night hiking on the AT requires at minimum 3 backup light sources!... The Petzl Nano inspires confidence navigating the night....
* I don't ever write reviews* (except in extreme situations) I'm a dairy farmer, I work the overnight milking, 1:30am to 6am every day. I had gone through 5 different head lamps before a friend who camps a lot, recommended I buy this headlamp. I had a hard time spending this much on a headlamp, but I'm glad I did. I have owned this headlamp for 5 years now, and I can honestly say I use it EVERY single day. It's on my head for at least 3 hours every day. It's comfortable, light, adjusts to wearing a thick winter stocking hat, or baseball cap, it's light, hardly noticeable. The functions of different light modes are awesome, yes, if you have it set in the mode to adjust the power of the light to what your looking at, and you look at something that reflects light it will dim the light, if you do a lot of that or find that to be a problem, just set it to a different mode. There are few things in today's world that work as hard, and last as long as this headlamp has for me !! This product is one of the few things that I have bought that deliver on every claim it makes !! If you want the best of the best, this is it. The price is high, but the quality is as well.
Reading the negative reviews compelled me to write this review as I have been using this product for more than a year now. Despite the bulky appearance the headlamp is very comfortable. There are many brightness settings that can be adjusted with and without the app. The Reactive lighting can be turned off and the light set to constant (at a desired strength) if fogging is an issue. The light is well crafted. The output duration is as advertised, the app. will give you a good approximation of how much power you have left.
Very happy with this lamp and use it primarily for running. I haven’t had a lamp this bright before, and for me the brightness and two-light beam/flood makes a big difference for trail running. For purposes of the trail immediately in front of me, I feel like I’m not running in the dark. I also like the small red light on the back for road running (or any running in the dark), which can also be turned off. With the several variables that the lamp has, it is very helpful to be able to adjust the brightness and settings from the app on your phone. I agree that the app is not amazing as an app, but it gets the job done. I also like that the app tells me the battery level and remaining power left at different brightness settings. Like the location of the somewhat large battery being on the back. It provides for a more balanced feel. The auto-adjust brightness feature is also helpful as the sun is coming up but I am still evaluating that. The lamp is pricey, but has some great features. It is certainly not the smallest or lightest of lamps. If I’m not running but walking or hiking, I could easily use a smaller or less powerful lamp, but for running I find the brightness and light configuration very helpful.
I waited to review this because I had 4 separate trips. Then I wanted to use in all conditions. Fishing at night, walking at night, trails hiking, camping, and kayaking. During any event, the light worked... at 1st. On the 2nd long week, all of a sudden there seemed to be a loss of connection between the power and light. I'd way thru my 3rd long week when I needed it the most, it wouldn't turn on at all. The battery was fully charged. I hope it is just the connection cord and not the product. PETZL makes an amazing light. So, 3 stars because within 6 mths, I had a $200 head band. When it worked, I loved the ability to switch the intensities. It was great for Georgia's darkness on the water and off.
I have owned this lamp for 3 years and it has performed flawlessly. When purchased through REI, I was working for Toughmudder as an insurance consultant and would often work their "jewel" events and walk the course at night. I liked the flashing red light so "mudders" could see me. I would keep the light level on low to maximize run time but would always keep a spare light in my backpack. I occasionally used the app but not as frequently as I thought I would. I would usually wear a ball cap under the headlamp for best fit. Recharge time is quick using the USB connector. Nowadays, I use the headlamp for evening dog walks and must admit with the red light tail lamp, I feel safer with traffic approaching me from the rear. The headlamp is quite handy during power outages as it gives me ample light to get my generator going. Recommended!
I've used my NAO over three years for night trail running on rocky, rooty trails in New England - it works! It stays in place, throws enough light, provides enough contrast for the technical sections. I've tried others, but none came close. I wouldn't go without it.
I’m a runner, I bought this for running in the dark...which in the Midwest...means running in the winter. This light has a thing called adaptive lighting technology (or something like that). Anyway, it’s a “feature” that I feel is completely unnecessary. What ends up happening is that when you run in the winter you will experience the following... 1) your breath will float up to the sensor causing the light to dim. 2) you will turn to look at a reflective surface ( glass window, traffic sign, etc.) and the light dims. 3) if it is snowing out, it throws the sensor off, and dims. So as you can see, the sensor is real finicky in winter weather. Personally I don’t see what the problem is with it being bright all the time. Then of course there is the app. Good heavens, does EVERYTHING need to hook up to an app? I mean, it hooks up lighting fast, but seriously... The app is cool enough, but man. Also, they could of just made all of this much, much simpler if there was a red filter that could be flipped down over the lense for a red light. Anyway, you want a bright headlamp? You got $200? Well here you go. As an upshot, they have the remote battery pack you can buy as well, nice for extreme cold. Fine, I will use it but the minute Petzel makes a simpler version with the same lumen output I’m buying it and throwing this one in the trash.
This light is bright, easy to use, has the auto dimming feature that terrific and lasts a long time. My only dislike is the adjustment. Instead of a string attachment like they had on the previous iteration, they switched it to an elastic cord and it’s not as good. If they’d go back to using a cord I’d give it five stars.
This light would be 5* if it took a normal 18650. Petzl made it only take a Petzl version of a 18650. The battery life after 3 months was down to 30 minutes. After just under a year it won't fully charge. After a 24 hour charging session it only lasts 5 minutes. This like could have been great. But with the battery as it is, I would recommend that others not waste money on it.
