Excellent, when used in correct conditions

Note: I have the 60 TPI version of this tire. Set up tubeless on a Trek Fuel EX on 30mm rims and cush core XC inserts, running around 12 +/-3psi depending on snow firmness. I rode them for 20 mi on the road to seat the studs, intentionally leaning the bike over often to seat the side studs as well. I've got about 120 mi of mostly snow and ice trail riding and lost 1 stud. I am sure if you ride this tire aggressively on the pavement or dirt, stud loss may be more, but that's not the intention of the tire, at least that's my understanding. Keep it on packed snow and ice and it is absolutely incredible.

Great on ice but loses studs

I got a pair of 27.5x3 Wrathchilds for mtb riding on packed snow and ice trails. Setting them up tubless was a bit of pain even with a compressor. I needed to use a tube to seat the bead on one side first. As for riding, they feel great on packed snow and ice. Its like riding on velcro. Even in upto 3" of unpacked snow they do ok as long as you pay attention to weighting them. I used to have some Scwalbe Ice Spiker Pro 29er tires and feel much more confident on the Wrathchilds. Maybe its the 27.5x3 vs 29, im not sure. The downside to these is expect to lose 10% of the studs. Maybe I didnt bed them in long enough on pavement. For what they cost its a bit disappointing. That said they are still probably some of the best studded tires out there.

Making winter irrelevant

The studded version of these tires are good enough to rail turns on an outdoor hockey rink in MN. The traction is crazy. This winter has become an icy one at singletracks around the twin cities and these tires make the ice a non issue. I dare say they are better than fat tires assuming you don't have 4+ inches of snow. I've used 29er Nokian Gazza extremes and Ice Spikers by Schwalbe, and these in 27.5+ are better.

Stud Shedding Is a Drag on These Tires

Great season extending tires, but the concave XL studs just do not stay in the tire in mixed winter conditions. If you want to shred, skid, ride steep things, and be a winter hooligan you will shed all the studs in the tire crown. Riding sedately on blue square packed snow trails, you probably will have better luck keeping them in. 120tpi version not worth any hype it gets. Buy Terrene Cake Eaters instead or maybe the 60tpi version has better stud retention.

The number of lost studs is appalling

An easy 20 miles on the bike path bedding them resulted in no lost studs. 90 minutes on the trail resulted in 37 lost studs. That'll be roughly $20 for the studs and the install tool, and an hour of time to re-install. I would recommend finding another solution if you're doing anything more than bike path commuting.

Work Great - but lose studs

First trail ride on these tires and I have to say I'm impressed with the traction. I was riding up steep ice with no problems, leaning the bike into turns at speed - all the while, I felt in control. They are amazing tires. However, like other reviewers, I checked after the ride and had several studs missing. For the price of these tires, 45nrth should really consider including extra studs for their customers. This would go a long way to make us feel like we are getting value. It's a serious disappointment to have to pay more money to fix a brand new, expensive tire.
