Total winter confidence
I just spent a week commuting daily on ice & winter mix after purchasing a pair of the 4.8s for my fatty. The difference between these and the 4.0 normal fatty tires is breathtaking. Commuting on black ice, snow and packed, glazed snow is now worry free. These tires are worth every penny in rider confidence. They climb the "lip" at the edge of the asphalt next to the shoulder effortlessly. (Regular fatty tires won't, period.) They are noisy like automotive studs, and take more effort to push down the road, but I don't worry about sudden traction loss anymore when winter complicates my commute. A must have for true snow & ice winter commuting! Be ready for flying slop when the roads melt! I bought "mud shovels" & added some homemade fenders to keep the ick that my front tire throws straigjt up- off.
Worth Every Penny
I tried a bontrager studded tire before these. These are far superior both in width, grip and plowing. I ride in Anchorage, AK on frozen lakes, through all the freeze/thaw cycles and this tire has never slipped when dropping hills or climbing. I went for the 4.8 width and don’t feel like they are too wide. Handle slush, crust and frozen mud with excellent grip. The icier it gets, the more the scooped shape studs dig in. I tried to go the cheaper route on studded tires. After slipping and falling down some icy hills, these are worth the high price for worry free cruising in the winter.
Perfect for icy roads and groomed bike paths
The Dillinger 5 studded tire is perfect for my needs. I need the studs for riding the icy city street to and from the local bike trail, and the moderate knobby tread works well on our groomed trail. I would not mind having the tire as a 4.8' instead of the 4.6", but perhaps 45Nrth made it 4.6" to allow for clearance with studs on some bikes. My bike has plenty of clearance, so the wider the better - especially when the sun is out and the snow starts to get a little soft. That said, the Dillinger 5 tire works great. I ride with 7 psi on the rear and 6 psi on the front - but I am a heavy rider and my fat tire bike is a heavy e-bike with full suspension. If you are riding on un-groomed single track and need studs, I'd suggest the 4.6" width 45Nrth Wrathlorde for more aggressive knobby tread.
