This is a great backpacking stove. It boils water faster than any other stove I've seen. The carafe means you don't need to carry a mess kit--just a spoon which you can keep in the provided slot. And the coffee press--well what would you rather have: instant or fresh brewed coffee on a cold morning? I love the temp indicator system--takes the guess work out of it. The stove lights up easily--even in the rain, wind, and at altitude. We spent a week above 10K, often in wet, freezing conditions--stove never let me down. The fill to line is exactly 2 cups--which is what is needed for most freeze-dried meals. Boil, fill the meal bag and set aside, then refill and boil again for coffee--you are ready with a hot breakfast in under 4 minutes. Everything packs up inside the carafe--including the gas canister.
Based on the recommendation of a wildland firefighter on a hotshot crew who use one, we bought one and tried it out on a camping trip. It worked brilliantly for fast coffee and we also had the Jet Boil pan with the Flux Ring which also worked just as well. This is an extremely well-thought-out and engineered product and very glad we got it. Hotshots spend upwards of 50 nights camped out on fires in a fire season and have deep insight into what works well. This does.
I bought this for backcountry camping. Works well for that purpose. It is light, packs up small, and has never failed to work so far. However, this backcountry use came in very handy when Hurricane Irma took out power for 5 days. It cooked everything we bought for sheltering in place and it provided hot water for baths which is a major morale booster! The item that became a life saver was the coffee press. There is nothing like providing a hot cup of coffee to those who need their caffeine addiction satisfied! Great for lightweight backcountry use, but down right awesome for shelter-in-place action!
Used all last summer when hiking in Colorado and Montana. Made coffee, hot cocoa, all of my dried meals, and even did Chinese hotpot in the Jetboil! So glad I upgraded from my old setup to this stove
I hiked to Blue Lake in the Eastern Sierras and was concerned that I would have issues at 10,500'. I had read another review where a hiker had used one at 10,000' in the Rockies and it worked fine, but they warned to keep the fuel warm. We were careful to keep the fuel canister in a jacket pocket before use and we had boiling water in 3 minutes.
Bought this and have used it several times now. Works like a champ. I've used it down to about 30 degrees and it cooked almost just as good as it did at room temp. My only complaints is the cup is to deep to eat out of it think and I wish it was a multi fuel system.
So I was not planning on purchasing one quite so expensive, but I am so glad we purchased this. We have used it car camping and on a two night kayaking trip and there is nothing like waking up to hot coffee on a cool morning. We have also used it to make pad thai noodles, where it performed great as well. No complaints here!
I've been a white gas hound forever with MSR Whisperlites. This boils water like nothing else, even the former XGK I owned. Make no mistake -- it's for boiling water and not much else. It is easy and compact and gets up and going fast.
Compact, light weight, energy efficient, and provides versatility. We've been doing day hikes and been striving to explore the trails to the highest peaks in each state on the east coast for starters. The Java Kit has served us well. The only disappointed was getting to the register to find that it was the only Jetboil design that wasn't on sale. Poor cooperate decision imo.
I used this stove in the field in both wet and cold conditions. It worked well and provided a morale boosting hot meal/drink when I needed it the most. It boiled water quickly during a training exercise in the snow covered Italian Alps in mid-December. My only criticism of this product is the igniter that came unsecured through rough handling.
