I am new to climbing, and purchased these as my first pair of shoes. I have used them twice a week for 3 months now indoor, and once outdoor on 5.7 and 5.8 slab climbing. They are holding up really well, and they are great even on the teeny tiny footholds in the gym in addition to smearing. I wear a size 9 women's street shoe, and purchased these in size 8 2/3 (US women's size). They are tight and I have to loosen the laces all the way to get them on, but they are comfortable climbing. I do tend to take them off when I am belaying to give my feet a break, but it's not always necessary. Overall great shoe and I would recommend!
I'm a beginner climber. Finding a pair of shoes that fit was a pain in the rear end. My heel always slipped out of the shoe, even if the shoe fit properly at the toes. I tried multiple brands and styles, none worked. These Scarpas were my life-saver. They not only fit my heel, but also the rest of my foot. Over the last couple of weeks, they've stretched enough that they're a comfortable fit for a couple hours at the gym. The laces are annoying to take the shoe on and off, but considering the shoe actually fits my foot shape, I'll take it.
These were my first pair of climbing shoes, and so far I'm very happy with them. I've worn them a few weeks, and they did stretch out/mold to my feet just a little bit- so if you're deciding between sizes, pick the smaller one. They run relatively true to street shoe sizes. These were the only shoes that fit my feet. I have slightly narrower feet with long-ish toes, so the laces that extend far down the shoe were useful and gave a snugger fit than velcro versions. The heel feels like a dream. The do turn your toes kind of orange, but it comes off easily.
I've worn these shoes 3+ times a week for almost two years now (with a few months off for injury and then again for COVID) and they're only just now starting to show some wear on the toes and in the leather. They've served me well for indoor toprope & bouldering and outdoor toprope and sport lead. They broke in super fast too - very comfortable leather. My only complaint is that they did stain my feet orange for the first 4 months or so. It's definitely worth trying on in the store before buying a pair, but these are just a solid pair of climbing shoes, especially for beginners who don't need very aggressive shoes.
My first day climbing in these shoes, I told my boyfriend, "my shoes hate me." He, a decade of climbing experience in, told me climbing shoes are "supposed to suck, you'll break them in." He was right. I have a very wide foot, and it's hard for me to find any kind of shoe, let alone one that's so snug and for such a specific purpose. The leather allowed these to open up, relax, and accommodate my foot's shape, with no lack of security. These shoes grab. In cracks, on tiny notches on granite, on shale! The lower heel works of this shoe works well for me and gives me more flexibility on the wall, a couple other shoes pinched really badly on my achilles and made some transitions painful. They're great. 10/10 reccomend from a wide-footed gal.
These are not my first climbing shoes. In fact, they make my fifth pair because I'm a Colorado gal who just, well, destroys shoes because we have so many types of rock to climb your heart out on. I had fallen madly in love with a pair of 5.10s velcro until I fell in love with splitters. The spot where velcro crosses over itself split on me. I knew I needed to convert to the lace-ups. I broke them in on AZ's Granite Mountain "The Classic" (the most sand-bagged route I've everrrr been on.) Four pitches without a break from the shoes on slabs, cracks, chimneys, off-widths, you name it. These shoes were perfect. Yes, the heel cup pinches at the top for a while until you really break them in. Yes, the laces allow you to really form them to your feet. Yes, you should down-size a little because they stretch a bit. Yes, Yes, Yes, you should buy them.
This was the first climbing shoe I ever got and it was perfect for getting into the sport. I started out doing top rope (indoor) for several months, then transitioned to doing a lot more bouldering (also indoor). Also bouldered outdoors with them twice and they felt secure. They were very comfortable to have on for several hours at a time, and I never felt like any of the trouble that I was having my climbs had to do with my shoes (just my technique haha). This review is in the past tense because unfortunately I recently lost my pair on an outdoor climbing trip, and I'm really bummed about it. I had these for a year and a half using them 2-4 times per week, and felt like I could have gotten a lot more juice out of them. Would really recommend these shoes to anyone learning to climb!
I just started climbing about four months ago and after lots of deliberating, chose this shoe. I stuck to my street size shoe and did not size down, despite advice from the dudes at REI. I can see their point, but being relatively new to climbing already, I didn't really want to spend my first few weeks in utter pain. I'm glad I didn't size down because although the shoes molded to my feet a bit, they certainly didn't give very drastically and were already quite snug to begin with. I love that they lace instead of velcro - I don't like to take my shoes off during the duration of climbing and it provides a nice, tight fit. The suede material of the shoe feels forgiving on your feet. This has been a great shoe to help me get acclimated to climbing and the price is fair for a beginners investment. Now that I'm hooked on bouldering, I do want a more aggressive shoe and so will be shopping for something different soon... the one big con of this shoe is the missing spots of rubber on the heel. It might make the fit feel better but when you're heel hooking, it kinda sucks/hurts.
Great beginner shoe that grows with your skill level. Once it broke in, way more comfortable than a Velcro shoe (to me) because the lacing runs almost the whole length of the shoe and it means I can get a really snug fit even when the suede’s stretched out and broken in. This shoe lasted me a solid 4+ years of use in weekly gym use (to twice weekly) until my dog chewed one shoe up. These are really comfortable for long sessions and I rarely took them off unless I was finally done climbing for the day. Great control, sticky heel and toe grip. I’m going to take them outdoors for sure, I may try more aggressive shoes soon but this fit so much more comfortably than the cramped experience I was being told to prepare for.
While these are my first pair of climbing shoes, I am strongly considering buying them again when they wear out. They are so comfortable and fit perfectly. I am a street shoe size 8.5 and purchased these in a size 40. They were a bit tighter at first but stretched out the perfect amount. I tried these on along with the Scarpa Origins but the Helix felt better on my narrow feet. Although I did not particularly like these shoes for outdoor climbing, I highly recommend them for indoor bouldering or top roping. I can even wear these while belaying and I hardly notice them as long as I do not wear them too long.
