Good Design / Firmware Updates Needed

The concept of the eTrex Touch 25 (and eTrex Touch lineup) is excellent; basically, take the larger GPSMAP 64 series and condense it down into a smaller form factor, keeping the GLONASS reception, adding a touch screen along the way, and even providing an electronic compass in the base model. For those wondering, map scrolling is quick, and there seems to be some good power under the hood, so to speak. There is a lot to like here, especially for geocachers, and most likely with future firmware revisions things will improve, but right now there are some glaring bugs. There is a pop-up menu that constantly asks you to start a track log of your activity, blocking your view of the map and other screens. There is no way to dismiss or disable this pop-up menu unless you actually start recording a track. Speaking with Garmin support, we were told this was a feature, and that the menu would keep popping up every few seconds. This leaves you unable to see or access the display screen -- big problem. There were also random unit freezes, requiring a power cycle, or batteries to be pulled to reset the unit. The electronic compass also kept requiring re-calibration. In regards to battery life; the unit we received suddenly began to completely drain fresh batteries within only a couple of hours, even brand-new lithium cells. (This is most likely an isolated hardware issue, probably just a random bad unit.) Either way, with the issues we kept having, the unit was returned. Hopefully Garmin can get things sorted out, as overall, this is a great blend of features and design.

Great for cycling!

I bought the Garmin etrex touch 25 about 2 months ago. I have used it on several bicycle training rides. My longest ride was about 106 miles, about 7 1/2 hours on a course that I pre-loaded, and I still had 2 out of 4 bars on my battery at the end of the ride. Tracking rides is quite user-friendly. It took me awhile to set up the dashboard view to read all of the stats I wanted to see during my rides (e.g., mph, miles to destination, average pace, elevation change, etc.), but once I got everything as I wanted it, it's been great. I purchased an annual membership for one of the GPS tracking companies (M_pMyR_d_) for about the cost of a coffee per month. I can easily download courses that I have done as well as find courses that others have done. It totally opened up my world. Downloading data after each ride is pretty easy, though you may need to work through it for the first few times - after that, you realize how easy it actually is. I like that I can analyze my performance for each part of the course - changes in elevation, pace, etc. for each stretch of the route. You can purchase a handlebar strap for this device from the big AZ online retailer. I have not experienced all of the troubles/issues that the previous reviewer mentioned. I absolutely love my Garmin and would purchase again.

Touchscreen isn't functional in the

This is great little unit, and I love that it just runs on (optionally: rechargeable) AA's, but the screen doesn't work well in the rain and the unit can start picking up with it thinks are taps on the screen, which can change your settings and a whole lot of other things. This video is some tips on how to minimize that problem.

A mystery

I'm having a very hard time. The instructions are really not adequate. I'm signed up for a class, but even that may not be enough. I will need to work 1:1 with someone who is really good at explanations after the group class
