Slow. Old technology. But versatile and useful
You have to look at this as a piece of hardware with potential, but you have to squeeze pretty hard to get that out of it. We're all used to the lightning fast speed of phones, and the layers of great software easily loaded with apps. This...is not that. To get maps and tools on this is like giving a digital birth. There can be lots of screaming. The Explore and Basecamp apps are ripped right out of the late 1990s. To say crude is understated. For many people a mobile phone or tablet would be the way to go. I would only buy this if you need a ruggedized solution to record routes. Getting the device to do what you want it to do is an awful process. It will do what I need it to do, but not without a lot of grief. Boo.
Thank you for your review and experience with the Montana 710i. We would like to discuss this further over email. If you would please email us at product.support@garmin.com.
Great InReach unit for backcountry adventures.
I do adventure motorcycles riding, and sometimes I find myself in remote areas with no cell coverage--like Big Bend National Park. I decided to go with the 710i as it gave me the emergency options I needed. InReach feature is obviously the key emergency feature, but the Montana can also serve as a back-up GPS unit when mounted on handlebars. There is a steep learning curve when it comes to planning routes and waypoints on the Explore app, but once you familiarize yourself with the system, it becomes manageable .
Larger battery capacity is a nice touch
Battery was never an issue on 700i however more is always better. USB C is a nice modern upgrade. It much in the way of changes however these units are more than most need leaving little room for improvement. Great unit!
Was hoping it would be the one!!!
The Montana 700 series is a large unit, well built. Only drawback is it does not play nice with apple products. I could not get the thing to sync properly with my MacBook.
We'd love to help with getting your device to sync! Please reach out to Garmin Product Support, using the "Contact Us for More Help" section at the bottom of this Support Center page: http://ms.spr.ly/6427sBufW ^DK
