Cool Max liners are junk
Bought this and after a couple rides the liner started to separate. Called Giro for a replacement as I assumed I just received a defective liner. Customer service was great and they sent one quickly with no questions asked. They even stated that they had issues with the liners in the past. One ride in on the new liner and it is falling apart just like the first. Once the liner separates it is bothersome on your forehead, and doesn't attach to the Velcro attached to the MIPS in the same way as when it was new. Big disappointment with this $150 helmet. Time to look for another brand as I don't want to have to call and get a replacement every couple of weeks.
Decent Helmet
This helmet was a bit disappointing. It was comfortable when I tried it on at the store. However, after I began my ride the rear plastic adjusting strap dug into my head when I looked up or left and right. The ultra absorbing padding that Giro claims absorbs ten times more sweat, did not work any better that the cheaper helmets I have used. In addition, the seam on the padding came apart after one ride. The venting and air flow where also mediocre. My head was still fairly hot on a 70 degree day. The Montaro definitely does not perform any better than a $75 helmet. You are basically paying for a mid-range helmet with the new unproven MIPS technology. Luckily, REI has a great return policy.
Bald guys beware
I bought this helmet & expected high performance for the price tag. There is very limited padding inside the helmet, especially troubling for dudes with no hair. The MIPS is a clear plastic shell that mostly rests on your skin. The padding across the forehead started to separate between the cloth & padding after only a handful of rides. I am torn to take this back to REI as I have about 20 rides in it now. Don't want to be a dirt bagger. I would look elsewhere for a better helmet. The back adjustment also dug into my head at times.
Super comfortable!
I purchased the Matte/Gloss Black helmet just over a week ago and so far I've ridden over 180 miles with it, both on the road/rail trails and while mountain biking. I purchased it online based on the provided head circumference measurements, and I think it fits true to the provided measurements. The thing is super light and super comfortable. It's been hard for me to find a helmet that was light enough, fit good enough, looked good (that's the most important part, right?), and was comfortable enough to keep on my bald head for extended periods of time. It adjusts very easily while on my head for a secure fit without any uncomfortable pressure points or things digging in, I'm able to wear my eye glasses and sunglasses with a strap to keep them secure with no issues, and the only thing I feel from the helmet while riding is the excellent airflow. If I had to come up with a complaint, I think my only thing would be that it looks to sit high on my head, but that's being nit-picky.
Issue with liner
As other reviewers have stated, there is definitely an issue with the liner. The very first ride with this helmet (less than two hours total) the liner peeled away from the removable Velcro backing halfway across the forehead. I sweat quite a bit so I don't know if that has anything to do with the issue or not. If I were to buy some good glue I am sure I could temporarily fix this but I will most likely return it as a $150 helmet should have a better lining. Other than the lining I enjoyed the helmet. The fit is spot on, ventilation is good, it's comfortable, and it looks good.
Good helmet but the padding falls apart
Others have mentioned this too, but the helmet liner/padding started falling apart on me after just two rides. Once that happened I ended up with (even more) sweat in my eyes, and the padding just kept disintegrating on every ride. I ended up returning this (thanks for such a generous policy, REI!) and getting a different brand. Overall I just don't trust Giro's quality control anymore; the only other Giro item I've purchased in the past few years -- a pair of gloves -- also disintegrated after light use.
Comfortable and well fitting
I got this helmet because my old one lacked sufficient ventilation. I can say that this is a drastic improvement! Not only that, but the helmet fits very well. The adjustment system works really well and is quite comfortable. I like that it's MIPS certified and not too bulky. My only complaint is that the straps are made of a very slick nylon that slides in the buckle TOO easily, making it adjust from time to time. I fixed this by roughing the nylon on with some sandpaper, now the buckle doesn't slide.
Will not last more than 1 season
I loved this helmet, it fit great, provided good protection. But for the price it is junk. The fit system started breaking in less than 1 season, now on its second season the fit system has completely broken. $150 for one season of use is unacceptable. Note: the fit system did not break during crash events, but normal useage and storage. Emailed Giro, they responded with 'sorry, the fit system is not replaceable, thanks.'
Good fit, but
The strap never stops loosening up. I have to reajust the strap shorter every couple of rides. This is even with a second restricter added. It is getting to the point of returning and choosing another brand. I have had a few Giro models in the past without this issue.
Very comfortable, secure helmet.
I was in between the medium and large sizing on this helmet. Turns out the medium was the way to go. The helmet looks and feels great. I went with the matte titanium/flame colors and it looks great. The ventilation works well enough for me. I love MIPS technology, but don't plan on testing it out any time soon. This helmet comes with a GoPro type camera mount that works just fine with my off brand camera.
