I don't have other hiking shoes to compare these to, I was using regular old tennis shoes before. I am amazed at what a difference these make. My feet feel safe and secure and comfy. The shoes are miraculously breathable and also waterproof! I crossed a creek and came out with dry feet! How do they do that? The grip is what really blows my mind. The trails around Arizona tend to have a lot of loose rock. Before I was slipping on the steeper parts, even unwilling to go further for fear of a nasty fall. These shoes make me feel like spider man. I practically stick to the trails. These were definitely worth the investment.
Only a couple of weeks with these shoes, but from day one I've enjoyed the comfort of the inside cushioning, roomy toe box and fit (thanks to REI staff recommendation to go a full size bigger than my street shoe size) of these shoes. The Salomons had been recommended on a Travel and Leisure "10 Best Hiking Shoes for Women" list, and by my visiting New Zealand hiking friends. I was looking for a new pair of winter hiking shoes for my relatively light (6+ miles on hilly trails) and the gore-tex with good traction soles filled the bill. So glad to have found these at REI Eugene!
I went looking for sneaker that would fit my weird wide feet. I found that and so much more! I can now walk were I’ve fallen before they cling to the earth! They are now two plus years old. I wear them daily all day including doing chicken coop duty (no pun intended).
Wearing these shoes is like walking on air for me, with one caveat. First I must say that I generally have to wear a 10.5 in hiking, running shoes. In this shoe a 10 is very comfortable, so, big toe box and my toes not hitting the front at all. NICE! I like more support in the arches and feel that I get plenty, no insert needed, even though I had counted on getting some. Very comfortable and follows my foot line. However, wore them on a 6 mile walk, not even a hike, and the Quicklace kevlar laces are so slick inside the eyelits, that they work more like a pulley (Colin H. had written that on a review on Zappos). He is exactly right. The laces are so slick, that as you move your foot while walking the upper part gets a bit more space (feels like it is loosening) but the laced section closer to the toes is tightening. NOT a good feeling. I kept having to loosen the laces as the area between the bridge of the foot and toes started to really hurt. It was clear that IF I could keep the laces from tightening on the bottom, because of the ease of movement of Kevlar laces through metal eyelets, these shoes would cause me to hear little angles singing as I walked ;-). I should also mention I tried on at least 25 pairs of shoes and boots. I called Salomon and they said they don't have "normal" laces for these shoes. So I went to REI, got a new Salomon quicklace kit for $8. Went on YouTube and watched the process to put a new pair on. Now, you must know, I am NOT necessarily handy and kept reading all the reviews that it was tough or impossible to do. It is not! Just follow instructions from YouTube and it is a snap (okay maybe two snaps). So I fixed the "tightening" problem by wrapping the new lace through the bottom eyelet twice. That went beautifully, especially with the little "tube" that is included in the kit. Tried to do it again for the second eyelet but it is too tight, so I just "made a knot" on the second from the bottom eyelets, at desired tightness, and it stays just fine. The rest of the lace I bring up as normal. AMAZING! Love these shoes with this little adjustment (and remember, I am not really handy!). Absolutely worth the little extra effort for me. Difficult feet finally found some dreamy hiking / walking shoes :-). Thank you REI employees for being so patient with me!!
First of all - I LOVE these shoes. I've logged over 200 fairly intense miles in these shoes over three months I've owned them. I've taken them over mud, scree, mountains, and creek-crossings, and they've done amazing. I've run in them, and used them backpacking, and even taken them down into a very slick, muddy cave. Other than being absolutely filthy, they're good as new. This weekend, I'll be trying them out in some light snow - wish me luck! They're lightweight, breathable, very waterproof, and stick to slickrock like they were made for it. Traction's good when wet - not the best I've ever had, but good enough. They do, however, run very very large. I normally wear 8.5-9 in hiking shoes and trail runners, and went home with a size 8. That was too big, so I had to return them for 7.5s, which fit like a dream. I'd order them a half size or two smaller than your normal shoe, and take advantage of REI's awesome return policy if they don't fit well. The quickdraw laces make adjusting them a cinch. I didn't have the slipping/pully problems other hikers reported, but I can see how that could be an issue. Still, it looks like replacing them with the REI replacements wouldn't be too bad. The quickdraws on mine are starting to fray, but after 200 miles I think that's to be expected. I carry backups with me when I hike now. There's one very minor design flaw, that isn't a problem in 90% of hiking situations, but is super annoying in 10%. The shoe's tongue is very high-profile. It's thick, and it sticks past the laces and sort of protrudes when you walk. This means that if you're trailblazing through an overgrown grassy area, it picks up burrs and pricklers and sticks like crazy. I did ten miles in the grassy hills of Big Sur, and I was stopping every five or six minutes to pull a wad of painful pricklers out from between the tongue and the top of my foot. If you hike exclusively in brushy, prickly, overgrown areas, maybe consider a different shoe. Otherwise, it's a small price to pay for a sturdy hiker!
I love the shoes because they are comfortable and keep my feet dry (even after several creek crossings). I don't like the shoestrings that much but I can change them.
GREAT GRIP AND VERY COMFY. THEY RUN A BIG SO I GOT SOME INSERTS AND THEY'RE EVEN BETTER!
I bought these for when I hike places with creek beds. I have a previous pair of Salomon's that I love but the tread has worn. I would prefer normal laces as I have a hard time getting these evenly tight on my foot verses at the top of my foot where it then digs in. The do keep out the cold and the water and they have a great tread. They just aren't quite as comfortable as my original pair from seven years ago. But I do like this manufacture.
Love this show for hiking and backpacking! Has great support and stability without it being heavy and too stiff. Great for wet hikes! Grips rocks well. Only problem is they are very very warm. I'm really satisfied with them.
I have had these shoes for 2 years. I hike a lot, and they are very comfortable and don't hurt your feet, and completely waterproof, you can hike in snow. However, I was very disappointed when I realized I had to buy $10 laces, watch a Utube video, and spend about 45 minutes replacing the laces when they broke. What a hassle! The shoes are so good I am on my third pair of laces, the shoes lasting much longer than the laces. I will never buy another Salomon again even though I like the shoes... too much trouble.
