Solid option to haul 4 bikes!
I wanted a rack that could carry 4 bikes, would be durable enough to stand up to DH bike shuttles, and not clean out my bank account. The FourTimer is great. It's heavy. And you need to have some muscle to raise and lower it. I have no worries about stacking 4 dual crown DH bikes on it. Assembly was easy it comes in four pieces and bolts together with 14mm socket and wrench. 4 stars because some of the tray adjustments and the main pivot can be a little sticky and take some effort to get right. But at half the price of other racks like this, I love it!
DON'T DO IT! TRUST THE LOW REVIEWS
I am careful with things I buy especially when I rely on them to perform in support of the fun things you do when using a bike rack. The clips that secure the straps are terrible. They break. First one broke on me shortly after buying it and I figured I did something wrong and ordered a $35 replacement part despite breaking only a kind of small clip. Crazy! But when you look at the part, the problem is in the design. The clip attached with a single rivet biased to one end. The other end is subject to leverage should anything get caught on the clip and that leverage breaks the clip. Well, even crazier is that another clip broke before the replacement part even arrived. It is breaking quicker than I can repair it. I figured this is bad and Yakima will certainly do something to make this right. No go. Well, I guess they provided me with two replacement brackets but it seems quite likely that the clips will break again soon. Will likely end up in this endless loop of parts during whatever the warranty period is and then I will be out of luck. Not a good product and not good resolution under warranty. Choose a different rack.
Pretty Great Rack
I really like the 4 timer, especially that you can easily take off and add back on two of the mounts. The bikes once secured into place are totally solid - no movement when driving. Unfortunately you can't fully open the back hatch of our Highlander with a bike on the rack. The other negative is no integrated locks, so I just keep a U lock and a long thick cable to secure bikes in case I need to run into a store or stop off on the way home from a ride.
Build to Last a Month
Poor design, cheap steel rusting from inside out causing swing arms to weaken and bend. Worse, sliding frame hooks strip and move up when vehicle bounces. Bike in last position will flop down onto highway and drag by wheel clips. Big damage to bike. Wheel trays don't stay in place no matter how hard you try to tighten. Nylock nut/bolt assemblies loosen on swing arm. This rack is probably fine for folks with bucks and use it very infrequently and can buy another after a couple of years. Look elsewhere for quality and longevity.
Slowly Fell Apart
We loved the rack at first. Then, the lock on the hitch disappeared. Then one of the tray tightening knobs disappeared. I replaced it with a carriage bolt and wing nut. This seemed to work. As we used the rack off and on over the next few months the plastic seemed to shrink in the AZ sun. I say this because no matter how much you tighten the hand knob, the wheel trays seemed to slide. The backup pin that holds up the rack is attached to a wire in case it slips out. Unfortunately the wire broke at the attachment point so I had to use a key ring to keep it secured. I am a reasonable person and use, but do not abuse my gear. When I spend $500 on a rack, I expect a certain amount of quality. I own many different Yakima products and love them. I will continue to consider this brand in the future. This rack however was a Lemmon for me
hopeful at first.... and still hoping its good
Bought the rack 3 months ago and used it twice. On the second run, the cable that attaches to the locking pin fell off from its attachment. Now using a key ring to hold it in place. The locking pin is also somewhat loose now. I will exchange mine for the same item and give it another chance hoping it was just my unit that has the issue.
Sort of works
I have had this rack for a year. I have used Yakima racks for thirty years and had expected good functional quality like in the past. Unfortunately this rack has a number of issues. 1.The bolts holding the tire cradles came without lock washers and I Iost two knobs on the first time out. 2. The slider that holds the tire cradles to the cross bar do not grip the cross bar. I had to get some gasket material from Ace Hardware to make these grip tightly. 3. The rack uses flimsy hooks to secure the cross bar of the back. My previous racks (car top) used sturdy firm clamps. These hooks do not tightly hold a bike. 4. There are pairs of little "lock bearings" that you are supposed to push to allow the hooks to swing 90 deg. for easier loading. These border on being non functional. If you had a third hand and could use two screw drivers to push the bearings in it would work OK. 5. Two nylon "safety straps" are included to further secure bikes. These must be an after thought as the buckles are of such poor quality that they are impossible to tighten and thus useless. 6. Not really a quality issue but this rack is very heavy and as expected from a bike rack is awkward. I don't know if it would have been possible to make this out of aluminum. I came very close to returning this rack. I guess the only reason that I didn't is that the nearest REI store is a two hour round trip away. For $500 I expect a lot more from Yakima.
Disappointing
I just picked up my new bike rack and during assembly a little black plastic screw broke. It’s there to hold a metal pin but the screw was so flimsy it broke the first time I removed the pin. I am going to try to find a way to replace the plastic screw because I need the bike rack. But if anything else breaks I am going to have to return it and find something else for our family bikes.
Worst Bike product I have EVER purchased
The hook that secures the bike to the rack on the frame tube causes damage to bicycles. Do NOT rely on the cheap foam to protect your bicycle, wrap the frame with a towel or you will be sorry. Should have been designed with arm to secure wheels. The fit/finish and overall quality is very low and not what I expected after owning Yakima products in the past This is the worst product I have ever purchased!
Poor Design
Whoever designed this rack obviously never actually used it. It is very difficult to put the bikes on the rack. The swingarms are tough to hook on the top tubes of the bike. Yakima should have used the hooks that go over the front wheel. It also doesn't work well with different size bikes. I have two adult bikes and two kids bikes and i have to by different size top tube hooks to get it to work. Very poor design and I regret buying this rack.
