Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome "luggage". Great value. We bought our first one for my husband to use as "luggage" for our 2 week trip to Italy and it held ALL his stuff including a lap top, multiple pairs of shoes and all his clothing. After he had a much easier time than I did lugging around a wheeled carry-on I decided to buy a 2nd one for our trip to Mexico. It held ALL my junk for 8 days including laptop, clothes, 4 pair of sandals, a hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, and lady sized makeup bag. When we're not traveling, we use them as gym bags due to the separate compartment for shoes. We really could not be any happier with the quality, functionality and value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This bag is HUGE! At first, I was a little skeptical paying over $100 for a backpack. Well, this is more than just a backpack. This thing is HUGE! I take advantage of the laptop pouch for the office, the middle pouch to put a change of clothes for the gym, and the front pouch for an iPad and miscellaneous items. Even after filling the backpack with all of these items there is STILL room to add more items and it does not feel heavy while wearing it. This is perfect for the office, the gym, and even better as a carry on! This is as big as a normal duffel bag and fits perfectly in the overhead bin. Get this bag! You won't be disappointed!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from How Can a Great Product Get Worse on an upgrade? I purchased last year's model of Overhaul 40 which I absolutely loved. It is the best backpack I have ever owned. So I decided to buy another one. Last year's version is discontinued so I bought the newer version. In the old version, the computer compartment is well padded and there is a velcro strap on the top of the computer slot that keeps the computer in place as it goes thru security screen and prevents it from sliding out. This strap has saved my computer many times. In the newer version Northface has removed it. WHY Northface? Why?! In addition in the old version there was a well padded tablet slot with a strap in the same compartment. In the newer version they have removed the slot and the strap. Again Why? Why did you guys make a great product worse? I wish I could just buy the old version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Go-To Carry-On Travel Bag OK GREAT BAG. This one is a keeper. I prefer it to the Osprey Nebula because it fits better under the seat in front if absolutely required. If you are planning on carrying rocks in your pack go with the Osprey it has a slightly better harness. I am on my second Overhaul 40 and love it. My first version travelled about 400,000 miles air/land and never let me down until the waterproofing layer started to break down. TNF promptly replaced it with the latest version free of charge. Cannot complain about that service. I own dozens of TNF products. Highly recommended.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Potential quality issues I use this bag as carry-on luggage 1-2 weeks per month. It's roomy enough for everything I need for work and 3-4 days worth of clothes. However, after only 8 months or so, the inner liner that separates all of the compartments from the bottom section is tearing at the seams. It's currently at TNF for repair. So, I'm now without my primary luggage for 8 weeks or more. I'm pretty surprised that it's having quality issues after less than a year, and even with repairs, I can't imagine this won't be a reoccurring problem. Meanwhile, the hot shot pack I've had for 17 years is perfect. It looks like TNF quality isn't what it used to be even on their premium packs. I hope I'm wrong but so far, no good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing bag for school! I've used this bag all last year for school and this year. It is a great bag and still looks brand new! The bag dosn't look big but it's BIG. I can fit 3 textbooks plus 2, 2 inch binders plus a lunchbox and and a drawstring bag full of athletic clothes! This is with the compartment expanded but it's still big without the extension. I also like the front pocket allot. I fill it with pencils and small books. The laptop compartment is great too! It fits a laptop and a couple notebooks. The only problem I've had with this backpack was this school year when one of the straps fell off. I'm still giving it 5 stars because this is the only problem I've had with them and I've used it everyday for a school year and still looks brand knew!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from By far best business travel backpack I have ever owned!!! Have owned many more expensive backpacks in the past that pal in comparison to the Northface over haul 40! I travel weekly for work and am able to easily put my sales binder, paperwork, computer, Bose headphones, notebook, folders, sunglasses case, power cords, medical diagnostic blood draw kit, and many other items in this backpack with easy access to everything. I love how it just slides over my luggage and the convenient handle on the side. Extremely durable, comfortable, and professional looking as well!!! When putting it on roller luggage and checking into hotel; even with all my stuff in it, there is plenty of space to drop my two free waters into it:) Ton of space!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for air travel I fly twice a month and so I'm always looking for the perfect bag. This fits perfectly under the seat on the flights I take (Alaska). It holds enough clothes for a week long trip. I previously used a hiking pack. While that one did handle really full loads better when I had to do a lot of walking, this one handles heavy loads better than every other laptop/airline style bag that I've ever tried. Feels very solid. Zippers seem really sturdy. The "dirty clothes" compartment at the bottom works great. I couldn't be happier with the bag.

I am confused on the dimensions. The specs say 21x12x7 your reply to questions say it is 20x14x6 +3 for expansion. I see how you lose the inch from an inside measurment but how does it grow to 14 inch?  To get to 41 liters i beleve the width has to be 14

Asked by: Marlene
The external dimensions given of 21 x 12 x 7 inches are taken from the back panel of the pack. The internal dimensions of 20 x 14 x 6 inches are based on the largest part of the main compartment which extends further out than the back panel.

How does this Overhaul 40 differ from the other Overhaul 40, item #867968? Thank you.

Asked by: citabria90
The two most recent versions of The North Face Overhaul 40 Packs have only small general material differences. The newer version, item 886304, uses ripstop nylon for some of the body. Also, the materials used for the shoulder straps have a slightly different texture which will stay on your shoulders better than the previous model. These overall material changes reduced the pack weight by 3 ounces.

is this backpack suitable for hiking - short day hikes?

Asked by: lianajo
This pack is a 40 liter size, which is a very large day pack. It is designed with travel in mind rather than hiking, and while it could be used for a short day hike in a pinch, we have other day packs that would be more suitable:
