Perfect travel bag

I travel extensively for work as a wildlife biologist and was looking for a bag to help organize myself during my travels. I have gone through at least 10 bags in the last 12 years without ever being completely satisfied until now. I wanted a bag that was comfortable, durable, and attractive, with numerous sensible pockets and organizers, and that was big enough for everything I bring but not too large as to interfere with quick runs through the airport. This bag fits my needs and desires perfectly. I've worn it daily and on several long flights for the last few months and am 100% satisfied. I cannot recommend it higher.

The Perfect Everyday Pack

Everything the other guy said. It's a great pack. Well made. Every stitch feels durable and strong. Alot of pockets and I love the two fleece lined pockets for carrying things like my go pro and phone. Things I don't want scratched. I wore it around the store for a while. I'm not a big guy and I found the straps to be dangerously close to rubbing on my neck. Once I put 10 lbs. Of weight on it, it was perfect. In fact, I found that the more weight I had, the more comfortable it got. Bottom line, out of all the day packs that are under 30L, this one is the best combination of practicality and comfort.

Road Warrior Companion

Great replacement for my Marmot Gunnison. Slightly more compact, this backpack fits "under the seat in front of you" for air trips, while still holding all the tricks from the old pack. Very comfy load balance. Wish it had more robust bottle pockets on the exterior, as my Hydroflask doesn't really fit, but I can make it work. Just worried about how long the flexy bottle pocket material will last with repeated stretching. Time will tell. The vented back so far really feels vented, and I have yet to feel like my hot blooded back is suffering any this summer. I recommend this product. And I approve this message...

Tennis Player with the "BACKPACK"!

My grandson, high school junior received this as a gift...a high-achiever, tennis player and extremely detailed ...never too organized, started his first day back to classes feeling prepared as he would say.. "strutting my new SURGE"! He left more confident knowing this backpack would enable him to locate all his school items without having to fumble around during instructional class time. Could not stop thanking me enough as he explained how important this school year is and now with the "SURGE"... "comfort" and "organization" with no time wasted. More time to concentrate on school work and tennis! Thank you North Face...we have the "SURGE"!

Everything I needed

Needed a bag for my doctoral program to hold books, my laptop food (night and Saturday classes) and a jacket. I originally purchased the North Face Overhaul but at 40+ liters this thing was ginormous. Still a great bag and would totally recommend it if you need an all in one transit bag. The new Surge was the next size down and it hit the sweet spot. Loved all of the extra features like fleece lined pockets and compression straps to hold everything in place when I'm walking. I especially liked the section for the laptop that opens up flat for faster trips through TSA screenings at the airport. But the two biggest and most important factors for me were comfort and pockets. This thing has both. In fact, it's so comfortable it's endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. I typically have about 20-30 lbs to carry across campus and this thing is so cushioned and supportive. I actually think the Surge II is a little more comfortable but this one is no joke. I dare you to find a more comfortable bag. As for the pockets, having to work full time and then run off to class, I was faced with having to possibly carry two bags, but this one has so many little pockets and compartments, I'm able to organize everything neatly. Overall, this may be the best back pack I've ever owned and it doesn't hurt that it looks really cool too.

One of the most comfortable urban backpacks on the market

The bag is great I'm mostly using it for office and city trips. Very all-around and versatile in urban environment. I tried hiking with it, but it's not its best use obviously due to bigger weight etc. The main advantages are excellent padding almost everywhere including the laptop/tablet compartments and the small front pocket which can be used for cellphone or glasses for example. The bottle side pockets are not so large, therefore, some wider containers might not fit or not stay firmly in place during activity. All the rest is kind of perfect for me. Maybe a waterproof version could be an improvement, but then it would be in a different price range...

Awesome Backpack!

overall this bag is awesome. I bought it for school as the bag I had before was too small. In this bag im able to fit my laptop and all the books for my 4 college classes (3 small books, 4 full sized books). The pocket for the tablet works great, however i use it for a portable battery pack. The fleece pocket for my sunglasses work great and the two vertical pockets work great for my phone charger, calculator, and etc. Would definitely recommend this backpack to others. When it comes to hiking this bag is also great. I have plenty of room for water and my camera bag fits in this bag as well. The chest strap and waist strap work great as support while on long hikes.

When In Doubt, "Surge" It Out

When I first started looking at backpacks I was not certain what to get. I knew I wanted to get a high quality bag, but didn't want to waste money doing so. This bag not only looks awesome, it accommodates all the needs of a student, or even general needs such as transporting office materials from work to home. This bag is worth the money; I love it. It has tons of pockets to keep organized, and some are super soft (like a fleece)! There is a lot of room, however, I am planning on it gaining more space as it gets broken in. I believe this bag is an investment, because I don't plan on buying another for quite some time!

Overall a great product

In general, this is a great bookbag. It has a relatively large capacity and is nicely divided and organized. I originally got this bookbag because my previous one didnt have much lumbar support. This one looked like it could give me that support i needed. Its more than I''ll ever need really but it helps that this bookbag is very versatyle - itd be appropriate for amost all occasions: travelling, hiking, commuting, etc. The only thing i do not like about this backpack is how the waist straps dangles. In an older model of the recon, they had little sleeves for which you can slide the waist straps in. I do not see why they could not incorporate something like this as well.

Greatest backpack ever!

This pack is awesome. I bought it to travel with and use in place of a messenger bag. The laptop compartment is really nice to have. The laptop compartment also pairs well with the camelback water delivery system. The bag is roomy and has a lot of pockets for organization. When packed full the backpack remains extremely comfortable while wearing. There is even a built in whistle on one of the straps incase you need to get someone's attention while hiking. I have had the same Northface backpack for over 12 years. It finally started fall apart and I chose this pack as it's replacement. You will not be disappointed.
