Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Touring Backpack 40+ liters backpack is perfect to carry on on the plane and will fit in the compartment above your seat. This pack is extremely comfortable to wear all day long and the ventilation is great. Hot spot is around the back shoulder blades. The adjustment of the pack is excellent and durable. Plenty of storages to put your items. My main compartment is for my clothing, the bottom compartment is for my bed liner, pillow, personal-care bag, and quick access to grab items. The top compartment (hood) is mainly for my small camera and personal passport. Shoulder straps and hip belt are great and extremely comfortable like a glove.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light Weight Long Duration Pack Did about 400 miles over 70 days, several different trips, last year in this pack. All packs have their limitations and quirks, including this one. Where Deuter excels for me is in the hip suspension. The pull forward straps are at the perfect angle to take the tension off my hips for this old, slow and longer duration hiker. A very comfortable ride. The shoulder harness and back are better than most. On my longest hike I was out four weeks, with one resupply. heaviest load was about 53 pounds with about 3 weeks of food and 3 liters of water. After a resupply by mule, ended up hiking out with two Bear Vault 500 cans, each about 13 inches high - and this pack swallowed both of them. For light weight, ruggedness and size this pack is a great combination. I strap my 3 pound sleeping bag on the outside with the side compression straps or the lid straps,so this helps with the heavy/long duration hikes. Made a mistake and pulled way too hard on the side straps, breaking the back rung of the male end of the plastic buckle. But there are two rungs here and just tied around the remaining rung. Now I know not to pull that hard. Requested replacements from Deuter. Wish they had metal. The quirks are in the pockets. Would be nice if the lid came off, but their similar ACT Zero does have a detachable lid. The lid has two nice size pockets, and this is where all my small stuff goes. Outside net pockets are open at top and seem flimsy, but mine are holding up. I use the two side ones for my 1.5 liter water bottles, and a rain jacket in the center one. This 50 liter pack holds all the stuff and the weight I would ever need to carry at less than 3 and a quarter pounds, with the best overall suspension system of the dozen packs I've used in the last 50 years. Nice!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the greatest This seemed like a really solid bag at first, but the durability was an issue for me. I took it with me on a month long trip to Peru. I did a lot of hiking and that's the only time I used it. One of the buckles that holds the top latch down broke towards the end of my trip, the stitches on the outside compartment are starting to come undone and there is a hole in the side pocket where a water bottle would go. Other than durability, it's a pretty solid bag.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from fully adjustable fail I needed a bag to carry extra stuff on a day hike - like photography stuff, and/or extra layers and other gear outside true summer months. 40 liters plus 10, is indeed the perfect size, and even would allow for a one night summer camping., However, the adjustable harness strap bumps badly into my upper back, making it very uncomfortable. I got the small size, fitting from 14 to 19 inches and have a 17.5 inches torso. REI helped find the right spot after a few failed attempts, but no matter how much I adjust the shoulder and compression straps, the rubbing does not go away. Aside this, don't like the fact that has only one belt pouch, and the bag closing system does not work very well On the positive sider, the side bottle mesh bags are really great in size and shape, making it very easy to remove a 1L Nalgene - not sure if they will be durable. Overall a nice bag, but load it to close max weight capacity, and adjust it to see if works for you. Deuter website is not helpful telling how you find the correct spot to loop the vary-system, but there is a youtube video showing it better. The back ventilation is not too bad, and actually dries pretty fast A good looking bag with some flaws - does not work for me

If you pack this bag to the 40L size, NOT the expandable size, is it carry on size for airplane travel?

Asked by: tallwahl
This pack measures 24 x 12 x 9 inches, which comes out to 45 linear inches. Most airlines require a piece of carry-on luggage to be no bigger than 45 linear inches (L + W + H) to meet carry-on size restrictions. This can vary so please check with your airline ahead of time.

Does the volume include the side pocket compartments or just the main bag?

Asked by: tallwahl
The volume listed on this pack includes all the closable storage compartments and pockets.
