Eh..
Cool little charger, definitely rugged and I like that the integrated cable will interface to my goal zero solar charger. In fact this integrated cable is the life support to recharging the Venture30. I'll be on 22 day trek on the JMT so I'm a little concerned that upon opening the Venture30 and removing the integrated cable for the first time, the microusb is already tearing through the insulation of the cable. If this happens to the main usb connector to the point it's unusable then I won't be able to charge the venture 30 from the solar charger. I read another review about defective cable and I second that., now I have to figure out how to get a replacement. The charger itself is compact, sturdy, but a little heavy for the backcountry. I'm only using it to charge my watch and camera at night when solar charger has no output., so I may go with something smaller especially If the replacement cable is dinky like the first one.
Stay away!
Great looking charger with rugged looks. The integrated cable(s) is awesome and enables you to charge the Venture 30 (rather than a solar panel) if you choose. and I like that the integrated cable will interface to my goal zero solar charger. This is where the good ends and the bad begins. I purchased this for the sole purpose of recharging phones (iPhone 6 and 6 Plus) and small devices. The Venture 30 would not provide either phone with a full battery regardless of the its claims of 2 full phone charges. If you want to charge phone, tablets, or e-readers look elsewhere. Maybe the Sherpa charger would be better fit, but at 2.5 times the price.
LOOKS COOL -- DOES NOT WORK -- NOT COOL
While working over seas in Afghanistan and in Africa I thought this would be a very useful tool that I could use to keep some of my simple things charged. I purchase 2 of these WITH the solar panel that matches up with these. SOLAR DOES NOT CHARGE ANYTHING -- and 1 of the 2 ( 50% ) will not even hold a charge when charged up directly to an outlet. You can charge it up and put it in your pack and the next day its DEAD. Since I was over seas for several years I could not return it. Purchasing several hundreds of dollars for only 50% of your equipment to even work at all -- NOT WORTH IT.
Perfection
I bought this and I can charge my iPhone 7 3-1/4 times. Everything works exactly as GoalZero said. A friend talked me out of it. That’s OK because I was looking at the venture 70. I bought that and didn’t take long I bought another Venture 30. The 2nd venture 30 charges my iPhone 3 times exactly. When I charge I charge from single digit to full. I took it on an airplane no problems. I charged my iPhone 7 and and iPad air2 every night while it was on charge itself. Each morning I woke to both devises plus venture 30 full charge. It works perfect.
Micro USB to USB charging cord issues after 3 week
I love this product because it works so well with my Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar panel. But, the Micro USB to USB cord started causing the Power Bank to blink all 5 blue lights when both sides of the charging cord is plugged into the Power Bank into a "storage position". This is a common problem according to various internet blogs. I contacted Goal Zero support and they are shipping a new cord free of charge with free shipping. I'm giving it a 3-star rating for this issue. If the new cord is a permanent fix, I would give this product 5 stars.
2nd unit failed, ignored by customer service
The first unit I bought failed in less than a year because a short in the cable discharged the battery when it was plugged in. The replacement unit stopped charging my iPhone in less than a year, even trying different charge cords and all the USB ports on the pack. It would light up but the phone didn’t indicate charging. I contacted goal zero and received no response. Went to my local REI and it was out of warranty, they couldn’t help me. I asked the store manager to call goal zero on my behalf... 4 weeks later still no response from goal zero. I had to go to another vendor, the Apple store who honors a 2 year warranty on electronic external batteries and get a different brand paying out of my own pocket to solve the problem. I won’t by electronics at REI again, and won’t get anything that is Goal Zero
Bad cord!!!!!!
I got this product hoping for a durable solar battery to use on my thru hike of the Colorado trail. The cord stopped charging after a few days out. I had too charge my phone straight from the panel. Goal zero really needs too think of a better design. One that actually is worth the price of this product. Was able too fix the problem when I hit a town with a Walmart, and got a new cord. But for how much this battery was in very disappointed with goal zero.
Venture 30 - charges itself
The charging LED's light light up when plugged into itself which indicates it thinks it is charging an external device which drains the battery and makes the unit almost hot. This happened about 5 months after purchase and I've tried both soft and hard factory resets multiple times but still does it.
Unreliable, bad warranty service from manufacturer
Bought this as part of the kit with the solar panel, but reviewing here also. Barrty cord failed after a couple months. Goal Zero sent me another one. A few months after than the battery itself has failed....it will not hold a charge and continues to discharge all by itself even with nothing plugged in. Multiple emails to goalzero have resulted in a very frustrating experience and no resolution even though the device is well within the warranty period. Its a nice looking device, but its not cheap and quality is evidently lacking. I have been unsuccessful resolving a defective device with the manufacturer. I'd recommend avoiding the brand.
Very poor cord design
The weakness in the charger is in the micro usb and usb cord, they simply fall apart. The connection to he battery pack itself is so tight, probably in attempt to dust and water proof it, they the connections pull out. Mine came apart in less than a week. I would steer clear of the Venture 30
