Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect first pack! Went into one of the Atlanta REIs and the staff (as always) was sooooo helpful in fitting and trying on packs. Tried on comparable Osprey and Gregory packs, each was comfortable but not 100% so. This was the 4th pack I tried and from the moment I put it on I knew it was the one! The hip pads are nice and soft with no 'sharp' edges like the Ospreys and the weight was very well distributed over the whole hip and lower back area. Compared to the Gregory it was a lot cooler and the weight more evenly distributed. The ventilation is great!!! I'm 5' 8", female, and about 220lb. Took it out on a short 3 mile hike weighted to 30lb with textbooks :P and had no problems!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack!! I am a beginner at backpacking and after doing all my research was sure that the Osprey Aura was the perfect pack for me. Thankfully I went into REI and tried on other packs- that Osprey was NOT for me. I tried every pack in the store and the Deuter fit like a glove and even weighted felt great. I have good balance with it( that Osprey wanted to pull me backwards even empty!) excellent freedom of movement for my arms and carrying about 32lbs for my first overnight was a breeze. I'm 5'6 ~140lbs and narrow in the hips, so my only issue was keeping it ON my hips cause theres not much for it to hold on to! My friend has the same pack and was blessed with actual hips and had no issue :) I LOVE this pack!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this bag! For background, I am 5'0", with wide hips and narrow shoulders. I had a hard time finding a pack that felt comfortable given my short stature, that also avoided hip rubbing issues. After reading other reviews, I decided to give this bag a shot. This bag fits perfectly! I've also met very tall women who have said that this is the only bag that works for them due to the wide range of adjust-ability. The only thing I'm not wild about is that you have to empty the whole bag to put a water bladder in, since the badder pocket is only accessible from the inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best pack I've owned I have tried multiple packs and this one has been the best by far for me. I am smaller framed and narrow hipped so very few hip belts actually sit on my hips and handle the pack load. This one does! I also have an old fractured clavicle that can be a pain if the shoulder straps don't fit and contour right. These do! The fit on the chest is also very good as it contours the chest and the sternum strap hits the right place. I like the adjustability and fit of this pack which by far outweighs any other features. I've carried about 25% body weight without any issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Fit I had been looking for a really good pack for a long time and had done tons of research and trying out friends packs and such. So when I went to REI I thought I had an idea of what I wanted. After spending a couple hours with the amazing associate Carmen, we finally got my tiny little torso fitted into this pack. I have it on the smallest adjustment and it fits absolutely amazing! SO many external zippers as well as an awesome bottom opening to just grab stuff quickly. Absolutely recommend this pack if your torso is shorter than most. Thanks REI!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid & well designed pack I used this pack on two sierra backpacking trips this past summer and thought I'd finally write a review. First the fit is really good. The pack is comfortable even fully loaded. Second, it is balanced. I had to do a bit of boulder scrambling on my last trip and it hugged my body just great and I never felt unbalanced. It is easy to adjust it to get a perfect fit. Finally It weighs less than a comparable Osprey although I think Deuter could trim even more weight without losing much functionality. I was able to stuff my down bag, my sleeping pad, my rain gear and a down jacket in the sleeping bag compartment. It is pretty large, maybe too large, maybe unnecessary. Wish the pack was waterproof and again wish it weighed about 12 - 16 ounces less but still it is a great pack for the money!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fit and features I had gotten a different pack for a gift which just did not seem comfortable, so I went to REI and spent a couple hours with a VERY patient and knowledgable associate. She got my original pack adjusted best as possible but it still did not feel right, and I really don't want to end up hundreds of miles from home in the middle of the woods with 30 lbs on my back and an uncomfortable pack. So we spent the rest of the time putting weighted packs on me, adjusting, and then I'd walk around the store awhile. I knew this was the right pack as soon as I got it on. I am about 5'7, 155 but I have a very short torso and was surprised to learn I'm on the small end of "small." This pack in incredibly adjustable. I was able to get everything just right. I hear a lot about ultralight packs, but to me, if the pack is not going to help you balance and support/distribute that weight, what's the point is saving a measly couple pounds? This bag is only 3lb 12oz- which is lighter than anything else I tried on. So that, combined with the adjustability and support pretty much sold me. I am very happy with the pocket set up- love the sleeping bag compartment, love all the big stretchy outer pockets, and there's tons of room inside. There's also plenty of places to strap extra gear on the outside. It works well with my 2 liter Camelback also. It's just a really smart design. As a designer myself, I was really thrilled with all the little well designed touches I kept finding- like the multiple zippered sections in the lid, and the fact that you can put more gear in the bag and just let the straps out and raise the lid. My only quibble is that it is not terribly water resistant, which is kind of irrelevant for me because I always scotch guard by bags, line the bag and load into a plastic trash bag, and divide all my stuff into water resistant dry bags. You're crazy if you are out for any amount of time and don't do that anyway. I just invested in a good Sea to Summit pack cover, so between that and my other precautions, my stuff won't get wet- at worst I'll need to dry out the pack a little at times. Totally worth it for the amazingly comfortable fit and flexibility of this bag, as well as the light weight. It was an ideal choice for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first pack I bought this pack about 3 years ago and use it for Appalachian Trail section hikes (3 days/per). It's my first pack, so I don't have a comparison, but I love it! It holds the way-too-much stuff that I carry, and does so comfortably. I'm 5'0, 105 lbs, with wider hips and narrow shoulders. The REI associate helped me fit the pack and adjust the length. I don't have bruises on my clavicles like my Osprey-toting friends. I can easily get my stuff in and out (I love the top zippered pocket and stretchy front section). My only complaint is that I can't reach my water bottles without help. Can't wait to take it to the Camino de Santiago this year!

Is this bag a carry-on size for airlines?

Asked by: tinab73
I own this pack and took it as a carry-on on many trips and many different airlines, even several times with the most notorious of all RyanAir. It fits in the square box thing they use to measure, IF you do not pack the top part at all... which is to say as long as your stuff does not go higher than the "frame" of the backpack (which is pretty much the top of the shoulder straps), it can work as a carry on!

Which rain cover is recommended for this backpack?  Would be great if site had recommended accessories for the purchased items!

Asked by: MammaB
The 80 liter REI Duck's Back Rain Cover would be a fine choice for the ACT Lite 60 + 10 SL Pack. https://www.rei.com/product/855412/rei-ducks-back-rain-cover-80-liters

How many liters is it

This pack can hold 60 liters of gear. If you need extra room you can pull the fabric out of the top of the main compartment to get an extra 10 liters (70 liters total).

What is "Fits waist/hips" dimension?

Asked by: Grasshopper71
Deuter does not specifically list a size range for the hipbelt. The hipbelt is very adjustable and should fit a maximum waist of about 49 inches.

Will a larger bear canister (BV500 or large Ursack) easily fit into this bag? It seems very narrow. Thanks!

Asked by: SJLifton
It is a relatively snug fit, but a bear canister does fit in this pack.
