You can stow anything in this bad boy. I love mine. I used it to go to the Grand Canyon and had all kinds of stuff packed up in the SkyBox. It's easy to install and is quiet on the road. Note to self: Do not get inside the box to show your son that it can easily fit a grown man with room to spare. Hypothetically speaking, you could be trapped inside until you figure out how to unlatch it from the inside. But I would never have done such a ridiculous thing. BUY IT!

Box Failure After 14 Months
PeterY
Top of box sheared open while driving highway speeds into an I-10 desert headwind. Lost our marmot tent, sleeping pads and some other gear. point of failure was where the latching system meets the upper plastic shell (see pictures). We bough the box 14 months ago and we store it horizontally indoors when not in use, and have probably used it less than 5 times. My previous Yakima Rocketbox lasted 20+ years, we gave it away and it is still going strong. So we felt confident in buying Yakima again, I find it extraordinary that an $800 roof box would fail like it did.

Does the job!

We purchased the SkyBox to accommodate the few times per year when we need to travel with all six members of our family AND a lot of luggage. We just completed our first trip with the SkyBox - a 7-hour journey through tornado warnings and thunderstorms. They SkyBox performed well - limited noise and kept our items surprisingly dry considering how hard it was raining our entire drive. I paid for installation at REI, which I'd recommend. It's not that difficult, but just difficult enough where I was glad I paid. The only downside is that the profile with the SkyBox on is higher than the clearance in our home garage. So, we had to get our car out of the garage before putting the SkyBox on the Acadia. Overall - happy with the purchase.

Fits perfect on 2017 GMC Acadia Denali

I’ve done so much research and looked for a quality product, but had no one to verify what the fit would be on the 2017 Acadia Denali. Well let me tell you, I used the TimberLine towers with the jetstream bars. Perfect amount of height, clearing the rear antenna and able to open the rear door fully extended. The sunroof will still operate in tilt, haven’t checked to see if sunroof will open but does appear that it will with the bars mounted in the right position. All in all, extremely happy with my purchase! Shout out to the Spokane REI on Monroe, their service is amongst the absolute best! You know they are good when your 11 year daughter looks at you and says “they have awesome customer service”. Good job and thank you so much for your help!

Box exploded while driving on the highway

Like many other reviewers, my box (to be fair after about 4 years) exploded while driving on the highway. The top and bottom shells shattered, the latches ripped off, the hinged came apart, and the top flew off behind me, luckily not hitting any other car. Again, to be fair to Yakima, there were some early signs of damage, with small cracks appearing in the box within a year of purchase and growing into larger cracks over the years until catastrophic failure. This was my 2nd skybox to have this problem. I returned and replaced my first box within a year because it was cracking. When it started happening for the 2nd box I decided to just keep using it anyway. Clearly that was a mistake since the cracking was an early sign of the catastrophic failure to come.

Almost Waterproof

This product fit perfectly on my 2014 Subaru Forester (SkyBox 21). I moved the factory crossbars so the front was as far forward as it would go, and the back one was just behind the back support pot (where it attaches to the roof). I took it on a few 180 mile trips, at least twice through driving rain, and only a bit of water got inside. They don't advertise this as waterproof, merely weather resistant. I was pretty impressed, based on the crazy wind and rain I experienced. Still, for the price point, you would think they would figure out a way to put a rubber gasket in there or something to make it seal a bit better, keeping out those last few drops. My workaround for the important stuff was to just buy some 55 gal contractor trashbags (which I already had, and wrap each item in there first). For any of you with kids, this model was enough to completely fit a Britax Jogging stroller with the rear wheels on, I found it was easier to take the front wheel off, since it's quick release anyways. It also fit right between the ridges on the inside so it didn't move around. They do recommend everything is tied down inside, which I did do.There are some included tie down points. As for gas mileage, this does hurt it a bit. I have meticulously tracked the gas mileage on my Forester, and have done this 180 mile trip numerous times in the past, and here's the results: I usually would get about 28.8-29.5MPG driving in pretty mountainous terrain at about 65-70MPH. With the cartop carrier making this trip a few days apart I got 24.64MPG one direction and 26.4MPG the other. One direction I hit way worse wind. These are all based on miles driven/gallons of gas added, not the trip computer. Either way expect a 2-4MPG hit on whatever you normally get. Still a better value than driving a larger SUV. Anyways, the 4 stars is merely the for the fact that it didn't keep all the water out (for the price). If they fixed that it would be a 5 star product. Oh, and for the 2014 Subaru Forester, when I say it perfectly fit, I mean that it cleared the hatch of my Premium (no auto lift gate) and I was even able to put the antenna back in (after initially removing it to load). I ended up saving a lot of money on this when REI was running a 20% off sale for member. So I would recommend waiting for that if you can. REI brought it out to my car, and put it on the roof, but I had to physically install it. I guess they don't want the liability. I am a relatively fit 5'9" male and I was able to easily remove it from the top of my car myself. If you had someone else helping, it would obviously be easier. I would recommend this product though for anyone who needs the extra storage.

Best investment for space saving.

Grabbed this thing after some fruitless searches for a used one and it was an absolute game changer for my smaller jeep renegade. I was informed that its not a waterfproof system and that pretty much none of them are. A simple solution I've found to correct the water sealing or lack there of is by picking up 2 packs of marine, RV, automotive seal material at home depot or other do it yourself store and run those along the bottom seam of the unit and thats it. I sealed mine before the weekend and drove through several rain storms and all my gear stayed dry so the proof is in the pudding or whatever people say... The price is a bit steep but for what it offers its worth every penny. The latching mechanism give a satisfying click when all three latch points secure and the handle releases to its locked position. It opens from both sides aiding in access from driver or passangers. The key stays in the handle and cannot be removed while the lid is open but i understand this is a common feature for most of these units so as to prevent the accidental leaving it unsecured and then hitting the road only to lose everything in the unit. There are cheaper options but if youre looking for an unparalleled amount of over head space to help open up more room in your vehicle itself then this may be something to consider. Set up it quick and easy once your roof cross bars are lined up you secure the clamps with the provided tool and thats it.

An excellent and economical roof box.

I bought this three years ago for my family's cross-country move from the west to the east coast. It's been on our Honda CR-V ever since. It works exactly as it is supposed to, doesn't generate much noise cruising at freeway speeds, and holds a ton of stuff. I used to have an older version of this box that had some latching issues with the lid, but the current one works great! The clamps holding it to my rack are rock-solid, and have not had any issues over thousands of miles of travel, and it's endured everything from hot temperatures and excessive humidity to rain, snow, and ice.

skybox holds a ton

yakima skybox 21 carbonite cargo roofbox silver,I bought in 2015, holds a ton of stuff it fits on both 2014 subaru crosstrex and 2004 subaru forester, and had to replace both old style front and rear lid supports with the new replacement style the first one was free do to it was still under warranty. minor amount of water drips gets in during heavy rain when driving, for me it is quiet at highway speeds but you know subaru's make a lot of wind noises, i have to make sure front lip is pushed down and seated correctly otherwise there is a gap.

perfect addition to our new ride

We just upgraded from a 2012 VW CC to a 2020 GMC Acadia and along with our 3 dogs are ready to hit the road with our new skybox to do some traveling. It's going to allow us to bring everything we need and still have plenty of room inside vehicle.
