This is a large shelf or tabletop radio. The AM reception is outstanding, especially on stations that are normally weak to you. The twin ferrite internal antenna is highly effective, but in the unlikely event you need stronger reception you have the option of attaching a 50-foot insulated wire to a rear connector for even stronger signals. The speaker is a rich, full fidelity sound that will not tire the listener, sounds fantastic on AM and very good on FM. You can plug in headphones if desired, and there are line in & line out connectors for additional versatility. The Weather Alert function works, but if you use it recommend you have the radio plugged into the house AC outlet as it will eventually drain the four D cell batteries if not disabled. The manufacturer recommends fresh (alkaline) batteries, not rechargable types as they work at a lower rate and won't power the radio. The Two Meter ham band is a great feature if you know what local frequencies to monitor. Your local amateur radio club can tell you, or do a web search for Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) in your area as they generally have a website with public information available. This radio is worth the price and if you catch it on sale it is a steal. Highly recommended.
Great sound
I could not get any radio to produce good reception for channel 710 AM in my home. I tried antennas, you name it. I ordered this radio and I get fairly good reception. I like it, the style and looks of it, not obnoxious nor too large.
At last!! AM radio
I was unable to listen to baseball games, and our cable carrier doesn't carry them. I love baseball and was so thrilled to read about this radio. No other radio could pick up AM frequencies where we live, and now I can listen each day during the season.
The CCRadio-2E is the finest available
The C Crane Radio-2 Enhanced (CCRadio-2E) is the finest tabletop radio money can buy, and it has amazing AM radio performance. I purchased one last year, and recently bought my second one from REI. The REI price is lower than buying either direct from the C Crane company or from other electronics discounters, even without considering the year-end REI dividend. I love these radios. It receives the AM and FM commercial broadcast bands, the 7 NOAA Weather stations, and Shortwave broadcasts in the 144.0 - 148.0 MHz range. All tuning is digital, and the FM band can be tuned by 0.05 MHz steps. In the US, FM stations are 0.2 MHz apart (e.g., 97.1, 93.3, 97.5 MHz) so this fine tuning is not needed, but many foreign countries have FM stations at closer frequencies. This also assists the radio in distinguishing distant stations that are at nearby frequencies. I listen to AM radio mostly, and became fed up with all the interference my household AM radios receive from fluorescent lights, microwave ovens, and an assortment of other sources of interference in our modern society. First of all, the audio circuits and speaker system are top quality, and they are tuned to make the human voice sound great (but music over FM sounds equally fantastic.) C Crane developed this amazing Twin-Coil Ferrite AM Antenna that pulls in weak stations from hundreds of miles away (even further after dark), and it is less susceptible to being overloaded by strong stations nearby (I live in a major metropolitan area with a 50 KW station nearby.) This radio pulls in stations day and night, and it minimizes the fading that occurs on cheaper radios. I researched this antenna, which is patented, and it is serious business! (Without me using an external link, you can search on google patents for US6529169 ) The noise floor on the radio is quieter than most (like when there is silence being transmitted), and it is nearly immune to most sources of interference including distant lightning storms. The circuitry also seems to remove other sources of interference, like when listening to a call-in talk show and a caller is talking on a cell phone -- it really sounds better over this radio than others. The radio takes 4 "D" batteries, and it comes with an AC power cord (it's a real power cord, not an AC adapter.) I run it on batteries, and one set has lasted me a year so far. The radio looks and feels solid and well-built. As you can tell, I think this is an amazing radio, but I have no involvement with the company. I've been an REI member 30+ years, I have an Electrical Engineering degree, and I listen to AM talk radio in my free time. After years of wanting to buy a better radio, I finally did! The description provided is a little light. Here is the information from C Crane: The Premium Radio Designed for Long-Range AM Reception and Emergencies! Reception and audio are two reasons to own a better made portable radio. For over 10 years C. Crane's CCRadio line has had some of the best AM reception available in a radio. With the new CCRadio-2 Enhanced version, audio can be accurately tuned for realistic human voice. It can also be adjusted for good musical performance! FM reception is a full step up in its ability to bring in a weak station clearly. The CCRadio-2E Enhanced also has the weather band/alert along the 2-meter Ham band. The five memory buttons on top of the radio make it easier to change stations rather than front mounted buttons. The boost in AM performance comes from C. Crane's patented Twin-Coil Ferrite® AM Antenna. This technology can give a noticeable boost to weak AM signals under most circumstances. After you select a station, the CCRadio-2E evaluates the signal for several seconds and then locks it in for the best possible signal. The display features a full backlight and three levels of brightness and an "off" setting. The Weather Band, with a very loud alert, can keep you informed of any NOAA alerts. The 2-Meter Ham band may make the CCRadio-2E a life saver during an emergency. Two Meter Ham operators are early on the scene of an emergency and they donate their time while handling perhaps 90% of emergency coordination efforts. The CCRadio-2E makes it easy to hear the vital information they share by acting like a simple radio scanner, searching five programmable memories for Ham operator communications. The sensitivity (squelch) can be adjusted for best results. Features include: 5 one touch memory presets per band, adjustable display light, adjustable bass and treble, clock alarm, sleep timer, auto scan, stereo headphone jack, line-input jack, and line-output jack. Runs on included AC power cord or four (optional) "D" batteries. Weight: 4 lbs (without batteries) Size: 11" W x 6.5" H x 4" D.
Finally I found the radio of my wishes.
I really appreciate all the technology stuffed into this portable radio. The classical FM music sounds nice. The owner's manual is written in clear and understandable English easy to follow. It is user friendly and its recessed fingers hold pocket is well thought of for good portability. This radio is dual power sources; from 4 D Alkaline batteries and wall plugin (the cord is included) Now I can wake up to the classical music for my alarm as it sets on the chest in my bedroom. Unlike most alarm clock radios this CCRadio does not illuminate at all from its LCD screen and it keeps dark in my dark bedroom for my good night's sleep. I have two of Sangean radios in my house, which lack in above technologies. Worst of all Sangean; it shines bright blue light when power is turned off. That defeats the purpose of using as the alarm. Who wants to sleep in bright lighted bedroom? I keep them out of my bedroom. I am so happy I trusted REI for their selection. I will send one to my son.
Great receptions- I wish I had a couple of these.
I have always loved radios like this and had wanted one for a long time. The reception and sound is terrific. it is a nice size and weight.
Perfect for what I needed.
I have a truck camper and use this radio everywhere I go. Love the sound quality, exactly what I wanted.
Poor quality parts
I'm on my second radio and had the first on repaired. Both radios had the LCD display fail and the station select buttons don't work on the first or second push. Also, the on off button works one out of 5 tries. The light comes on at times and runs my batteries flat. Over $450 in cc radios is too much. Looking for another radio
World's greatest affordable portable radio.
Once I got familiar with the ins and outs of the operating system, the radio performs like a dream. I use it as my only radio, not in a vehicle. It is worth every cent and more. Keep up the good work, C Crane, and REI.
