Safe, comfy and carries like a champ
Ali had good head/neck control at about 6 months old, and we were so excited to get rid of the bjorn (the b stands for backache) and upgrade to the KC 1. It's got a bomber harness for your child, and ample side and chin padding - so its nice and cozy. It's on an external frame and carries so well. The child's seat is adjustable - so you can make it longer/lower as your child grows. Both parents can adjust the pack with 1 simple strap (takes less than a minute) so trading off is a snap. The child's weight transfers to your hips, which becomes important as they grow from 15 to 35 lbs. The pack is light-weight with one big storage compartment for your child's necessities; one parent can bring this pack and have everything they need for a half day adventure. It's got a removable sun-shade option - which is a must-have while hiking - but it pulls right out for packing up in the car or bus. We used the pack hiking, fishing, and frequently around the block to induce sleep. Eventually we moved up to a KC3 (more storage for climbing gear) and all our friends were all drooling over the KC1 for a hand-me-down. It's a great pack and will get you outside with your little one.
Simple and perfect for little jaunts
I picked this up after using a friend's Kelty pack to haul my 5 year old up Cheyenne Mountain. I needed something to fit my smaller frame and this pack works perfectly. Lightweight, easy to adjust and mount with my 18m old in the pack. Storage is enough for diapers, wipes, snacks, and sunscreen. There's nothing fancy - no hip pockets, no seperate water storage - but for the 3-5 mile hikes I usually do with girls it's everything I need.
Excellent practical carrier
I finally decided to give this carrier a try and have been really happy with it as has my 21 month old. He really enjoys being in it and seems to really like the higher vantage point. I use this both in the city where it is much easier to maneuver than a stroller as well as outdoors. It's adjustable and comfortable, easy to pick up and carry. I also got the sun/rain cover which I think is a must for the little one. I have worn this on four mile hikes while carrying a 25 pounder, plus basic day hike snacks and have not had any issues. Quality and build are good and holding up to regular use. It does require that you are in half decent shape to be able to fully enjoy the purpose of this carrier. I only gave it four stars because these items are expensive, I was able to buy mine during a sale. I'd definitely recommended it.
Does not work with sun shade currently sold by REI
You might be thinking, "oh fantastic, during the REI sale I will buy a child carrier AND a sunroof to protect my sweet little child from the elements." But you would be sorely mistaken that the Deuter carrier and matching, wayyyy overpriced sun roof currently sold by REI actually work together. Not sure if we will return or what, but pretty disappointed that such $$$ gear does. not. work. The sunroof listing says "works with 2019 or later." So maybe REI is unloading some old stock, in which case I would expect this to be on REI garage or in clearance.
No foot rests.
Nowhere in the description of this does the issue of footrests appear. Footrests are essential for any child over 12 months-particularly ours, who is a bigger child. Had to return it unused.
