Rated 5 out of 5 by from All The Right Features I'm an avid hiker/climber living high in Colorado mountains where rain/wind shells are mandatory. I had several other name brand shells from major gear manufacturers that were badly worn and needed to be replaced. I kept looking for something that had: 1) Waterproof shell, 2) Windproof shell, 3) Adjustable hood, 4) Pit Zips, 5) Front Zipper, 6) Front Velcro, 7) Stow-able Pocket, 8) Fit right, 9) Was lightweight. After looking at all the major brands, the North Face Venture was the only shell I could find with all these features? Now that I've used the Venture Rain Shell in the field, I ordered two more. This is a bomb proof shell you cannot go wrong with.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great jacket, but lining peels I've owned two of these. In both cases the lining started peeling in the hood after about a year's use, and within a month had gotten real grotty. I'm not into having to buy a new one every year. Secondly, the earlier version of this the inside pocket netting extended down to the hem creating too large "bin" or "bucket" or "magazine" pockets - the main reason I bought the jacket, in the city these kind of pockets especially convenient for books and shopping In the current version, they took that extended netting out and you're left with only two hand-pockets. Other than that, the jacket looks great, the waterproof is great. Now if they reinstated the bucket pockets and fixed the peeling I'd be happy to buy another.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to. I bought this last month to replace my almost 8 year old REI rain jacket. It fits great, and keeps the rain off like it should. I like that that my neck is covered very nicely but find that I have to unzip the jacket down to my upper chest to be able to put the hood on. Once the hood is on and I have it fully zipped up my head moves freely and I don't feel restricted. I also don't see the hood coming off either which is nice. The only downside I see is are the cuffs. My REI jacket had the velcro to tighten but also had some elastic so that it would stretch. I am finding that if I have it too tight I can't get my hands through the sleeves and am having to always unvelcro and revelcro to get the right fit when putting it on and off. Otherwise it's a great jacket.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from LONG sleeves See B-funk's review -- this was my favorite model, so I got another one when the old one started peeling inside. I was shocked to find that the sleeves (Medium) came all the way down past the tips of my fingers when you stand staight. I guess I could've velcro'd the wrists tight, but then I'd need to undo them every time I take off the jacket (I don't recall seeing elastic on the wrists). I found out somewhere that the sleeves are "37 inches". I believe the regular sleeve length for medium garments is about 32-34ish. The rest of the jacket is pretty solidly built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket This jacket is great quality and fits perfectly. The reason I'm leaving a review is because of sizing questions I had before buying. I bought the regular and tall size. For scale, I'm 6'4", 210, and fit. When I wear dress shirts I wear a 36 neck, 36/37 sleeves. When I wear a regular shirt (polo, t-shirt, etc.) I wear a large. I got the large, and it fits like a glove. The regular size fits okay on my torso and the length is fine, but the sleeves were too short. The sleeves on the tall version come down to about mid-palm when the cuffs aren't tightened, but when you do tighten them you have plenty of space in your sleeves to move comfortably in all kinds of different motions. So if you're tall and have long arms like me, I'd get the tall version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The North Face Venture Rain Jacket I have owned this jacket for a little over one month and 3 real good rainstorms. Excellent protection, really like the hood. When you turn your head, the hood stays close to your head, not obstructing your view! I use this at work outside and am very pleased with the purchase I made!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Keeps the water and wind out I purchased this back in September as it was a lighter weight option than the old gortex shell I owned. The plan was to take it backpacking on my Colorado trip to the Lost Creek Wilderness. On the trip we hiked up McCurdy Mountain. As soon as I hit the plateau the wind was blowing about 20+ mph, and since I was waiting on my hiking partner to still reach the top I threw on the jacket and found immediate relief from the wind. Once my partner finally showed up we continued on our hike and about 45 minutes later it started to rain. This is still the only time I have used the jacket in the rain, but man did it secure a place in my pack for every trip. We got pounded with rain and wind for about thirty minutes before we found a place to set up camp, which was done still while wearing this jacket. Once safe inside my vestibule I took off the jacket and everything underneath was bone dry. This thing definitely does it's job! I also liked how well the hood moved and didn't restrict my vision and never felt like it would come off (picture shows how well it hugged my head) as well as how the thing folds into it's own pocket (btw this is why there aren't pockets on the inside as some previous people have complained). The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because the sleeve length is pretty out of whack, as already mentioned. I didn't find it to be too big of a deal, though, since the rip and stick cuffs held nice and firm. I figure when I wear this jacket I'm trying to keep the elements out anyway, so I already plan to keep the cuffs tight. And it allows me to reach for things and not have to worry about exposing my wrists or the layers underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From a 6'5" man, it actually lives up to 'Tall'. Finally TNF has a few jackets for us tall people. I am very happy with the fit-there's no excess mid-section fabric but the sleeves and waist actually fit as they should. As far as quality goes it's all there, and it's as good of a rain jacket as you'll find anywhere else. Do NOT buy this thinking it will double as a jacket to keep you warm though-I've made this mistake before. This is more of a shell, and is designed to keep you dry-not warm. But I'll throw on a sweater underneath, and wear it casually come spring. Great buy!

How "loud" is it compared to other jackets. Does it make a lot of "brushing" noise while moving?

Asked by: KTP0101
This jacket is comparably loud to other hard shell jackets. It does make a brushing noise if you brush your arm against your torso.
